Don't listen to all of these old reviews, this is a NEW Star Trek Online game. Much has changed since release, try it!
I will say right out the gate the game plays like a single player game, think Starfleet Academy for those who remember that.
Here what is cool....
Receive a distress call from a ship under attack by pirates, warp in to the rescue, take out the ships with some pretty fun space combat. Now the ship needs your help with it's warp core before it blows, so you send over an away team, yourself included. Some pirates got on board before their ship blew up so you will have to help out with them as well. Take care of business, beam back out to your ship, warp on home. You also will have away team missions on planets.
The ship customization is pretty awesome, and you get to name your ship whatever you like....it even shows up on the hull which is pretty cool.
Your skills are what your crew specializes at as well as yourself. It is too much to explain here, but the game gets pretty deep but accessible at the same time.
Try it out, what have you got to lose? A new expansion is on the way as well.
