A beautiful version of a classic formula. Too bad it's really short.

User Rating: 8 | Star Soldier R WII
There's a few Star Soldier games already on the Virtual Console: Super Star Soldier and Blazing Lasers to name a couple. Star Soldier R is the latest iteration of Hudson's addictive, fast-paced series. Too bad it's really short!

There are only a few game modes available: 2-minute, 5-minute, and a rapid fire mode. The 2-minute mode consists of one level that you need to beat in less than 2 minutes. The 5-minute mode has two levels, and you need to beat both within 5 minutes combined. Rapid fire mode, on the other hand, is an interesting idea. You press the fire button as fast as you can for about 10 seconds, and you simply try to set a record of how many shots you fired per second. 2-minute and 5-minute mode both have online ranking, but Rapid fire mode doesn't.

The graphics are simply amazing. They don't feel dated at all, and cause no lag to the gameplay. They fit the style of the game perfectly. All the flashes when you're destroying everything is quite satisfying. The sound is typical for a Star Soldier game. You hear the explosions when you destroy things as catchy Techno music plays in the background. Control is simple. Just use the D-pad on the Wii Remote (or whatever controller you're using), press a button to fire, and press a different button to deploy your little drones upon the enemy.

Replay value may be small for this game, but it's great in short bursts. Going for the high score is pretty fun, too. Two levels is a little disappointing, since the other games contain about ten, but the flashy graphics and smooth gameplay is very satisfying. This game costs 800 points, and I say that's cheap enough to warrant the purchase of this one.
