This game had quite a few downsides, but overall it came through just by being fun.

User Rating: 6.5 | Star Ocean: First Departure PSP
The remake for the original Star Ocean game has its quirks, and honestly, quite a few of them, but the game managed to pull through. Fixing those few could have been enough to make it to the top though.

Firstly, the storyline. Overall, the plot just doesn't seem to be all there. It's like reading a synopsis of a movie or a shortened novella of the actual book. The main plot points and a bit of dialogue are present, but there's really not much in between. In the beginning, it seems to be solid, with the problem being stately explained and the characters traveling back in time to be able to rectify it, but during their trip, they seem to just be going through the motions of an RPG, without actually acting it out.

Now for the battle. This is most of the fun. Battles are done in real-time hack-and-slash style, with the characters encountering enemies randomly on the map, and then charging at the enemies that appear. A basic attack in performed with the x-button, Symboloy (magic) is cast from a menu with the triangle button, and special skills are used with the shoulder buttons. Fun, overall, but unfortunately, there's no real challenge, and most of the game is extremely smooth sailing unless leveling has been completely neglected. Although, for anyone simply looking for some light-playtime on an easy-going game, or for an inexperienced gamer, this is a good game to play.

There's also the concept of item creation, which is also quite fun. When a character levels up, they gain "SP", which are points that can be spent on Special Skills. Some of these skills give bonuses in battle, but the majority of them allow the character to use item creation skills, which get better as higher levels are purchased. Simply being able to make one's own items out of almost nothing is not often seen in other RPGs, and is very entertaining, especially nearing the end of the game when amazing creations become possible.

Now for the features that are exclusive to the remake. Firstly, the graphics are nicely enhanced. The scenery is bright and welcoming, and the characters look and move smooth and rounded. There are also new animations for cutscenes, which are extremely well done. They're done in anime style and are excellent. There are also a TON of new voiceovers, which are present during the entire game, even during many non-event conversations between characters.

Overall, the game is was a fair job. The dungeons and battles are short and easy, and the plot is shallow, but it's balanced out with a fun gameplay, interesting item-creation system, and stunning audio and visual. This game doesn't receive a great rating, but it's doubted that anyone could give it a very bad one either.
