It was okay. Maybe it's because I got this one after playing both SO1 and SO3, but this wasn't nearly as interesting.

User Rating: 7.1 | Star Ocean: The Second Story PS
Star Ocean: The Second Story was good enough when you only considered gameplay. Your characters could learn and grow according to the vast amount of skill combonations that applied to them and you fought monsters that actually took effort to beat. All action was real time, unless you selected otherwise and it involved a bit more focus than you have to give in a linear turn-by-turn RPG. The gameplay was a great success and kept me interested.

In an RPG that is two discs long, however, even a great one player gameplay will only get you so far. I don't know many people who would wish to put a ton of hours (60+)into a game with no multiplayer without something else renewing interest once in a while. For most RPGs the thing that usually is the greatist help keeping the player glued to the game is storyline. Storyline is usually the peanut butter to the jelly in an RPG and this is were my interest began to die a little. Like in all SO games so far, there are multiple endings and hidden party members to discover. This was a plus in both 1 and 3 that I think is a great idea worthy of continuing in later SO games, however I must state that in spite of both those qualities being in SO2 they seemed more limited because of two major reasons:

1) Multiple endings are usually more sweet if they make sense. I would have loved this game so much more if you actually saw twists in the story as evidence of how your freindships (or not) changed before you see the final result at the ending.

2) There was something really bland about the characters (both hidden and automatic) in SO2. Only three of them stood out enough in my opinion to make them noticable and wasn't even able to have them on one team at once. In every story, character development is ALWAYS important.

Other then the bland story (in my personal opinion. Obviously there were a lot of other people who well enough of it) the graphics actually became an issue for me in this game...and I'm telling graphics usually never bother me much when looking at older games, but I know they could have done much better than that on the PS. I think some SNES games might have done better. Everything 3D was so jaggy that you had trouble seeing what it was at some moments and the sprites were very, VERY plain.

If you can still manage to find a copy for a discount, I would say that this game would be worth it if your really starving for an RPG to spend your time on...otherwise I would probably not bother with it a remain patient for somthing with more splender to it.
