Assault has it flaws but it is still a beautifully excellent Starfox game despite its minor issues.

Starfox is probably one of the most underrated franchises of all time. The original Star Fox on the SNES as well as Starf Fox 64 on the N64 were BOTH some of the best games on the surface of the earth, and Starfox Adventures, Rareware's final game for Nintendo, was a superb game as well, yet, the series for some reason has been doubted as one of Nintendo's worst franchises. Why? I have no idea. But it could be that they didn't like this game for some reason and than decided that the whole franchise was done for, even games that have been released BEFORE it came out. In my opinion at least, Starfox Assault has quite a bit of flaws but it is not even nearly bad or even mediocre enough to be considered the "destroyer" of the series. In fact it really is a great game that just happens to have some gameplay flaws around the edges.

The story goes like this: On a mission to stop Andrew Oikonny, the cousin or something like that to the Starfox enemy Andross (who is dead in case you haven't guessed by now) the Starfox team encounters a strange creature called a "aparoid", and it's not exactly the most friendly thing in the universe. As the Starfox team encounters each mission more aparoids seem to be taking over certain planets in the Star Fox Galaxy and the aparoid spread becomes a more serious issue than any other news. Star Fox and team must stop the leader of the aparoids once and for all to save the galaxy from doom.

As always, the Arwing missions are impossible not to screw up, even if they were put in the hands of a company like Stellar Stone or Titus, and they are fun as ever. However now there are Star Fox land missions like with Star Fox Adventures but with guns like the old Starfox games. These don't control as well as the Arwing missions because the controls seem to simplistic and awkward to handle, especially inside the tough-to-maneuver-but-necessary-in-battle landmasters.

The graphics are nice, obviously not near the quality of Star Fox Adventures but still great all the same with some nice detail. The sound is no doubt Star Fox Assault's best category. The background music is just plain beautiful and the sound effects themselves aren't half bad either. In fact, Assault may actually have some of the best music on the Gamecube you can find.

Multiplayer is another sharp spot for the game. As surprising as it is, its actually very addictive, and plays sort of like Halo multiplayer would only less bloody and of course not online. It is obviously no SSBM or something like that but it's shockingly addictive nonetheless, and adds some serious replay value that would otherwise just be a "good rental but lame buy" game.

Overall this is a great but flawed Starfox game any Starfox fan would do WELL to pick up. Assault has its flaws but it is still a beautifullly excellent Starfox game despite its minor issues making it a helper rather than a destroyer to the fantastic Starfox franchise.
