Star Fox 64 is the second game in the series and many people claim it is one of the best Star Fox games ever or maybe even one of the best space shooters ever. The story is that Andross has taken over the Lylat system and he declares war so Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare and Slippy Toad go to Corneria to sort it out. Along the way they come across bosses, new allies, new planets and even Star Wolf. This is a sci-fi shooter, you control your arwing with the control stick and shoot with A (these are the controls for the virtual console version with the Gamecube controller). To use a smart bomb, press the B button. To perform a barrel roll (DO A BARREL ROLL!) press the R button twice. There are more advanced controls like boosting and using your brakes which the game will teach you about in the first level. The graphics are great for the time of it's release, people will criticize the dated graphics but back in the day they looked really good. The controls are perfect, nothing feels under or over sensitive and all the controls respond perfectly. The controls might of been a bit clunky for the N64 but for the virtual console release they work very well. The voice acting and the script are spot-on, these people know how to act and it's not some cheesy script either like some pointless jokes being repeated. Don't expect a work in the park with this game, it can become a real hassle in some parts especially if your fighting with a boss, most of them are easy but it gets harder and harder as the game continues. There are many different routes you can take, to discover these you have to think carefully and listen out to what your team members are saying. Star Fox 64 is a classic title, with slick graphics, perfect controls, awesome boss battles, cool vehicle sections, a lot of bonuses and overall a fun game. The only downside was the harsh difficulty but if you can manage to ignore the difficulty you get one of the best games available for download. Purchase it now.
