The loveable yellow sponge stars in a mediocre platformer.

Well, first off, this is a kids game at heart. Older kids and adults will find little fun in this game, because most of it is, quite honestly, boring and uninspired. This is in complete contrast to how the show is. Which is very dissapoiting.

For your entire adventure, you control Spongebob Squarepants himself. The controls generally work well, he moves when you want him to move, jumping is usually precise, and his attacks do the trick for the most part. This is probably the game's highest point.

Now, the gameplay is a very mixed bag. It revolves around you exploring each of the levels, and completing certain tasks. Some as simple as defeating an enemy, to delivering krabby patties. But like the rest of Spongebob: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman, it's boring and uninteresting. Whether your trying to catch jellyfish or facing the Dutchman himself in the final level, there's just no spark. It's bland. Occasional humor like discovering a stinky sock (one of the Flying Dutchman's "treasures") and hearing an "eeewww" from a group kids provide some relief.

The graphics are, you guessed it, bland and uninspired! So are the levels. Everything has a dull, faded look to it that's actually pretty unappealing. And not to mention you get the feeling that you're the only being in the whole Pacific Ocean when you enter some levels. When you look around, the only things you're likely to find are some jellyfish, some coins, an enemy or two, and maybe Patrick or another character. It's almost depressing, because in the actual Spongebob world you'd imagine Bikini Bottom as a place full of life and always moving. In complete contrast to this.

As far as sound goes, it falls in the "meh" category. Nothing special going on here. The voices are fairly well done, if wooden at times. The rest of the sounds, like swinging a net, jumping, running, opening a door, etc. are okay. I wouldn't write home about them.

Despite all these points, Spongebob Squarepants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman isn't a bad game. Really, it's not. At most, it kills a few hours and provides die-hard fans with plenty of their favorite sponge. There are worse games out there. This one just fails to impress.
