Split Second is a beautiful and fast paced arcade racer with an innovative new trick, but sadly it's not addicting.

User Rating: 7 | Split/Second PS3

Split Second: Velocity pretty much came out of nowhere. It's gameplay is similar to arcade racers like Burnout, but it adds one big trick to the gameplay: Power Plays. Power Play triggers hazards like falling towers and bridges and firing helicopters against your opponent, or sometimes it can even harm you. The story of the game might sound a bit like the movie Death Race. The participants compete in a reality TV show where cars race and sometimes try to even blow up each other. The story flows mainly with pre-race cutscenes. The graphics are really good. Scenery looks detailed and the fictional car models are shiny and polished. The gameplay is pretty good, with controls easy to learn and master. The Power Plays are simply triggered by pressing triangle, which makes the game easy to play. Sadly, Split Second just isn't addicting. It does all the important things right, but it just doesn't get me back to it. I'm not addicted in it. That's a big flaw when you're talking about video games. The sounds are good. The musics are fitting and memorable and the explosives sound earthshaking. The game isn't too lengthy. The main mode can be completed in 6-9 hours, but of course there are many fun multiplayer and single player modes. Split Second had what it took to kill Burnout, but Burnout is addictive, Split Second is not. Like the game says, "a close call".

+ Pros: Detailed and beautiful graphics, good controls, memorable musics

- Cons: It's not addicting, fictional cars that are not impressive, there could be more tracks, main story is pretty short
