What's better than playing as Spider-Man? How bout playing as Venom!

User Rating: 8.4 | Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage GEN
This game follows the Maximum Carnage storyline from the comics that was a hit in the 90's. I remember reading the comics and loved it so to see the game come out was just too cool. Surprisingly this game is good. It follows a Double Dragon type level setup where you can move left or right or up and down along a path. As Spidey you have a few beat-em-up moves at your disposal such as shooting a web out to drag a thug into fist's reach, shooting out a web to tie up an enemy for a few seconds, or using your webbing to form a shield. Combined with punches and kicks it's mostly a button mashing game. As you progress through the game there are hidden hearts to help you gain your health back (you're gonna need it) and there's Superhero icons. The superhero icons allow you to call upon the help of heroes such as Captain America, Cloak & Dagger, Deathlok, and more.

Partway through the game the story splits off and you can choose to continue as Spidey or as most of you will probably do, you get to play as Venom. Venom is noticeably slower than Spider-Man but makes up for this with improved strength. Venom's moves essentially mimic Spider-Man's only using his symbiote instead of webbing. The rogue gallery is a lesser-known bunch straight out of the comic storyline featuring Shriek, Carrion, Doppleganger, Demogoblin, and the title villain Carnage. The villains aren't terribly tough individually but keep teaming up in the later levels which makes things considerably more difficult.

The only thing this game really lacks is the ability to play two-player co-op with Spider-Man AND Venom. It is only a single-player game but in it's own right is still awesome. The game is very long for a side-scroller and features no game saves. This is another game that's pretty tough to beat but can be done. Definitely worth picking up when you get bored.
