Civilization Meets Anime RPG, It Melds Poorly Together and There Is A Lack of A Tutorial

User Rating: 6 | Spectral Force Genesis DS
Spectral Force: Genesis I came across as an American/Canadian port, and paid a heavy price for it in thinking the cover art, and simple description of the game's content won me over - a big mistake on my own part. Spectral Force: Genesis drops you head first into the world it take's place in, and without any proper instructions or a tutorial it is a mess. The game opens with choosing a nation to run, manage and lead; and the game's format is played out in a monthly format, each month requiring you to do a certain task for your nation.

You could be charged with managing finances, governmental policies you must enact for your citizens, carry out subterfuge against your neighboring nations, and eventually prepare for conquest as you invade your fellow neighbors. This sounds more fun, than it actually plays out - nothing is explained, and you end up making fatal mistakes, that effect your game-play later on.

Graphically the game is what you would expect from a Japanese Anime-inspired game, but even this cannot save it for me - as the game-play is broken, and nothing is explained, so almost every interesting aspect of the game is impossible to fully understand and utilize.

The Good:

- At first the anime style of the game is endearing, but it wears off eventually.

The Bad:

- Almost every aspect of the game is done poorly, without any instructions or tutorial and becomes an annoying element of the game.
- The game advertised the idea of controlling armies, and utilizing an RTS element but this plays out automatically on its own, and you feel lied to about this aspect of the game.
- As for a fusion of War Sim, RTS, and RPG there is almost none of these elements, as for an RPG your generals and leaders already have their specific stats, that decide on who you use for certain tasks.

Spectral Force: Genesis was almost all lies, both on the cover art and in terms of reviews of the game elsewhere in the gaming world, it lacks in every aspect it says it exceeds in. I paid over $20 Canadian dollars for the game, and feel generally ripped off. It's not even worth half of what I paid, and I would advise you to only buy it if it's under £5 or $5. Avoid it if you can.
