The Pirates of Pestulon will come and steal a lot of your time with this hilarious sequel.

Sierra, the king of adventure games by time SQ3 had come out was shelling sequels for every adventure game they had out. Space Quest 3: The Pirates of Pestulon was inevitable. Sierra had a new graphics engine to show off, and what better way. Space Quest 3 takes place right after 2. You float aimlessly in the dark void of space in an escape pod when a junk freighter picks you up and mistakes you for space rubble. Once you are onboard, you awaken, and that is where the new adventure begins.

The new SCI engine for SQ3 made a huge impact on graphics, and looks that much closer to being a cartoon. As far as gameplay goes, nothing really changed. Sierra still implemented the input mechanic where you have to type out commands to get a job done. What really makes this game stand out is the fact that Sierra has managed to stuff many more locations in SQ3 than any other previous Space Quest. You will find yourself putting together a spaceship so lovingly called the "Aluminum Mallard," out of junk parts and find yourself travelling to locations like a McDonalds ripoff floating in space. During your plights in the game you will uncover a secret message in an arcade game that is a plea for help from anyone who will give it. Two guys from Andromeda are being held by an evil company called "Scumsoft," and this is where the real plot of the game is at. While fighting your way to finding the two guys, you will meet a few memorable characters like Fester Blatz, an alien who runs a souvenir shop, and Arnoid the Android, a space bounty hunter who looks suspiciously like the California Gov (I won't mention names =)). During all of this you will see some comedic little sites, like the enterprise leaving the floating restaraunt, or the Jupiter 2 from lost in space in the junk freighter. Like the first game in the series, SQ3 has a couple of mini games that are pretty fun, like fighting in what looks like huge rock-em-sock-em robots, or trying to outrun space fighters while gunning them down. With the improvement in game engine, comes improvement in sound. SQ3 finally implemented the use of sound cards such as the Ad-lib card and even the Soundblaster. Sounds finally strayed away from the common bleeps to hisses and engines revving. Another great part of the sound was the music. The music was put together very well, and if you have ever played SQ3, may still even have some of the memorable tunes stuck in your head

Mind you, this game is nearly 20 years old, it is still an absolute blast to play. With new locations to explore, SQ3 has an advantage over the last two games, you will find that it takes a little longer to get through, but this is not a problem, it's more of a blessing. As with any Space Quest game, this is a must play, not to mention one of the best in the series.
