If you love the arcade games of the 1980s and don't mind the simplistic gameplay then you'll enjoy Space Intervention.

User Rating: 7 | Space Intervention PS4

Space Intervention is one of those rip-off games where it takes similar elements from other video games of old and it is no surprise that this game borrows heavily from Taito's legendary Space Invaders arcade games. This doesn't make Space Intervention a bad game considering the cheap price tag and what is on offer because the gameplay is simple enough to pick up and play and if you remember the arcade games of the past then you are going to get a kick out of it.

It is Space Invaders but stripped down and simplistic.
It is Space Invaders but stripped down and simplistic.

So, the gameplay is a vertical 2D space shooter with basic graphics over the space background where you blast away at enemies whilst trying to avoid getting shot yourself. You have three types of enemies that fire different projectiles at you from enemies that fire regular shots, enemies that fire in a three-way arc and lastly there are enemies that launch heat seeking projectiles that can follow you but slowly which can be avoided. The gameplay is simple enough, you are given a max of three hits before dying and the gameplay seems to be quite enjoyable and addicting, controls are simple but work really well so it does seem like a solid rip-off game of Taito's Space Invaders but two issues come up.

First up, the game is at its most basic level where the enemies don't go downwards to overwhelm you like in other vertical 2D shooters and you don't see them moving faster the fewer enemies on screen to make them harder to hit which is a little sad. You also don't get some of the special enemies that would appear across the top of the screen that you could hit for extra points. Second there are no defender posts like in Space Invaders that you would use to temporally protect yourself from enemy fire which is a shame, it's the same kind of deal in another game I reviewed before which was Space by Breakthrough Gaming Arcade and that game also tried to play like Space Invaders but it wasn't a good game.

It is however one of those games where it has a super easy Platinum Trophy to unlock because all you do is shoot down endless waves of enemies to earn a high score which is enough to earn the Platinum Trophy. It doesn't seem hard as the game is at its most simplistic nature but however the game for whatever reason puts a checkpoint every 2000 points which ruins the tension and fun of getting a highscore and makes getting the Platinum Trophy even easier.

There really isn't much to say or complain about Space Intervention in terms of how it looks and plays. It is, however, basic with simple graphics, simple music, simple gameplay that takes only some elements from the old vertical 2D space shooters but not doing anything to make it stand above or below other games that play like Space Invaders. Still if you are looking for something cheap to download it only costs £0.55 on digital stores, Space Intervention doesn't cost much but doesn't much going for it but hey if you enjoy old school style 2D space shooters then you can't do worse than this game.
