Poor performance and clunky interface kills this game

User Rating: 4 | Space Hulk PC
Space Hulk has so much potential to be a fun game. It's a great little turn base strategy game that was destroyed by crappy development.

Basically the gameplay involves maneuvering a bunch of space marine terminators through a maze of tight corridors while getting attacked from all directions by hordes of gene stealers. Your enemies are only melee and kill your marines pretty quickly once they get in range so you have to relay on careful positioning. Overall really fun and enjoyable.

However the game is tedious to play. First of all it's extremely choppy even on a decent computer. That would be understandable if the graphics were eye candy but they literally look like they belong in the first dawn of war game. Furthermore changing the graphics settings doesn't seem to improve anything, the game runs just as bad on low as on high settings.

The interface is slow as well, select a marine, wait 1 second, order him to move wait another 1 sec, etc...

Also the animations, oh the animations are the worst. Every time you move a marine you have to watch him as he lazily drags his butt to the destination which takes more than 5 seconds. Yeah I understand that terminators are big lumbering hunks of weapons and armor but you cannot skip or speed this up the animation! And 5 seconds may sound like not much but when you have 10 terminators to move for 10+ turns most of your playtime will amount to looking at terminators waddling around.

When a gene stealer gets shot, or when a melee fight occurs you have to watch the same crappy fight animation over and over. Once again no skipping allowed.

As a result, missions that would normally take you 10 min to beat may take you 30.

In conclusion the game had a lot of potential, the core gameplay was already there from the original board game. The concept art was also already done since it's WH40k. All the developers had to do was implement it in a pc game and they failed. My guess is the game was released too soon. For $30 it's a rip off.
