User Rating: 7.2 | Soul Reaver 2 PS2
Soul Reaver 2 is meant to be only played by fans of Legacy of Kain. They'll eat it up for sure. But everyone else will be turned off by the rushed effort Crystal Dynamics put through. Taking place right after Soul Reaver, Raziel discovers that following Kain into the Time-streaming portal back in time to right before the pillars become corrupted. Going on would spoil too much. The story here is terrific - arguably the best of the series. However it requires that you've played Blood Omen and Soul Reaver 1 first (the game has a timeline in it, but it just doesn't do the games justice - you have to play through them to understand why the Kain series has such a following.) Once again the brilliant voice-acting from past games is seen here. If you've played Soul Reaver 1 then you know exactly how the game plays like. Now Raziel can summon the Reaver itself at will, but you cannot consume the souls of those killed by it and using it too much will cause it to drain your health. The game also utilizes the Spectral Realm, but you'll rarely have to. The combat is also similiar, but you need not worry about fighting vampires - all of your enemies can be beaten into submission. However, now you can wield different types of weapons and just for kicks, the game has some interesting finishing attacks. Fighting humans can get old but can be skipped. However, later you'll meet up with some large monsters that put up a fight. They'll often block your way and can travel to the Spectral Realm. The thing with Soul Reaver 2 is the level design. The game is set up so you essentially walk back and forth on the same path over and over again. As you can imagine, this gets old quickly. Along the way you'll enter forges complete with some interesting puzzles (not the repetitive block puzzles from SR1.) But there isn't enough of them, and you'll spend most of the game walking back and forth. The game is very short and ends in a cliffhanger. Kain fans had to wait 2 years for the release of Defiance to find out what becomes of Raziel and Kain. So in the end, Soul Reaver 2 can only be recommended to fans of the series. Everyone else has little to no reason to bother.
