As much as Sonic R was a poor racing game. Sonic Riders offers nothing to improve on it… as by allowing characters to ride on hoverboards, skates and other weird and wonderful boards, it's the annoying track designs that makes this a total letdown.

Firstly, you can choose characters from Sonic and Tails to hidden unlockables such as Shadows and Rogue… then you get the brand new then unforgettable characters which have some relation to the story, Jet, Wave and Storm.

There are two stories, the Heroes, Sonic and his two friends and the another is Babylon with the three new characters as mentioned. As you complete the story mode, you unlock a mission mode where you get some challenges to complete on each track. As you complete the missions, you unlock new boards, which is pretty cool to use in other races.

Also when you complete a race, the rings you collected are saved so when you have enough, you can buy new boards using your rings saved up.

The races are like Wipeout tracks mixed with SSX boarding During the race, you have a boost bar, which gets used when you boost, jump or do a slingshot move. The Slingshot move allows the racer to stop for a moment and turn and when you released the button which slingshots the racer out back onto the track… it's pretty cool and useful while you get to deal with tight bends on some tracks.

The player can earn back some of the boosts after doing tricks or entering a pit stop. The pit stops are laid out onto the track, the problem I get during a race is sometimes I'm in the lead and I accidentally stop onto these and stop to fill up, a good chance for other racers to overtake me… just plain annoying.

The player can expand the boost bar by collecting rings, these can level up the characters bar as well as the board's stats. It possible for the player to loses all their rings when they fall in a bottomless pit or getting attacked by the enemies.

The controls are good to some degree, and after learning what each character type can do, it's really no problem, when they're using them in the races track, you learn the shortcuts which are easy enough to remember, then it's the problem of pulling the moves off while racing as some tracks are extremely frustrating and makes the racing in some parts almost unplayable. It's difficult to know when someone is being able to put off these moves and sometimes makes the player costs the race and ends up looking cheap.

This game marks Sonic 15th year anniversary, it makes you wonder if they rushed it in order to release it. Maybe with a little bit more time, they should of worked onto the game to make those parts playable.

Everyone as well as Sonic fans, rent this game, all I can say.
