This package contains the GENESIS versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2,plus Sonic 3 and Knuckles(as well as the version of S&K that allows you use Knuckles in Sonic 2),Sonic Spinball,Sonic 3D Blast,Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, the Game Gear Sonic games and Comic Zone. However Sonic CD is not in this collection(they included it in another Sonic collection so they could try to get people to buy it and make more money).Knuckles Chaotix isn't in this collection either(maybe I'm expecting too much, but the disc space on a DVD could have stored even more great Sonic/Sonic theme titles.
But still this title was a good, budget priced title considering you got lots of great Sonic games included with it.
The games have a save feature now which allows you to save your progress at anytime, which can be a good thing or a bad thing because it means you don't have to restart the whole game if you lose all of your lives but it makes the games too easy. But if you want an old school type challenge,I guess you can simply not use the save feature.
If you don't have a working SEGA GENESIS,this title gives you the opportunity to play the best Sonic games ever made. The Sonic games on the GENESIS were the best Sonic games IMO.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2(GENESIS version) is one of my favorite games of all time because it's gameplay is so fast and playable, and the levels are colorful and mix high tech and colorful levels very nicely and Sonic 2 is included with this package.Sonic the hedgehog for the GENESIS is a classic because it's use of speed made it such a fun platformer to play.Sonic 3 adds more exploration to the levels.Sonic and Knuckles is a great title too and Knuckles ability to climb walls fits in well with the Sonic style of gameplay.Comic Zone may not be a Sonic but it's an enjoyable beat em up with comic style graphics.Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine is a challenging puzzle game and personally I don't like it that much.Sonic Spinball a pinball style game which makes you use Sonic as a pinball and I don't like the game but it's different.Sonic 3D Blast claimed to be the first 3D Sonic game, but the gameplay is more isometric than 3D.The Gamegear Sonic games are interesting, one is a platformer and although it's not as colorful as the GENESIS Sonic games it has some fun level designs. The other is Sonic Drift which is a racing game similar to Mario Kart but it has terrible controls and dull graphics(they should have made this game on a more powerful console).
Because the games are emulated, their controls, graphics and sound/music are not as good as they were on the GENESIS.It would have been nice if they tweaked the controls and graphics and redid the music/sound.
The controls don't respond as quickly as they did when I played Sonic 2 and Sonic and Knuckles on the GENESIS.The games are still very playable, but lack a little bit of the fluentness they once had.
This title is still a great package and has some of the best 2D platformer games ever made.
