When the blue hedgehog is not making himself look bad with all his terrible spinoff and mainline titles he can channel out some really good ones. Thankfully the Sonic Mega Collection compilation disc will give you a history look at Sonic's best triumphs on the Mega Drive and Game Gear consoles.

Featured in the compilation are 7 Mega Drive Sonic games and 6 Game Gear games. There are some unlockable Sonic games and also some non Sonic games as well, these are unlocked by fulfilling some conditions. You can also check out some high resolution concept art and actual game manuals as well as some comic front covers and videos which is rather cool.

As always with these compilation reviews I do I only focus on how they play rather then go in detail into the goods and bads about each game because it's something that should be done separately on the games themselves. Each of the games included are obviously emulated but however they all play really well just like they play originally. I also really that in the PAL version of this compilation Sonic 1 also retains the PAL version speed and music style for those like myself living in Europe. The screen resolution in gameplay is good but you can also press the R3 button to make the screen bigger if you wish.

Each of the Sonic games play really well and their controls are very easy to get the hang off. Many of the old school Sonic games hold up well in which Sonic 1 to 3 and Sonic and Knuckles' gameplay is well designed and still enjoyable with all the speedy gameplay intact. You'll still enjoy getting all the secrets and chaos emeralds in some of the various main games if you remember how to do them. Anyone who grew up with Sonic games will still say that the Mega Drive main Sonic games are still the best and to an extend they have aged well and still are worth playing. Some of the Game Gear titles are reasonably good as well.

One useful feature the developers included in the collection is the save and load state system. You can save the game in any Sonic game for when you want to take a break from it or you reach a very difficult stage in any game. So if you die you can reload that state you made and return as if nothing happened. It's cheating in a sense but for some Sonic games with no save feature it can make playthroughs of each game easier.

However the collection also has two of the absolute worst rated Sonic the Hedgehog games ever made, these games are Sonic 3D Flickies' Island and Sonic Labyrinth. Sonic 3D Flickies Island has you going around each level collection 5 Flickies to move onto the next wave and then another 5 Flickies to finally finish the level which is seriously boring. As for Sonic Labyrinth you have to navigate yourself though each level fighting against awful controls and just atrocious game play in general. I already talked about Sonic Labyrinth in detail so I already know just how bad that game is. Another bad Sonic game is Sonic Drift which has some of the most annoying tunes in a Sonic game and the overall racing gameplay in it is simply unenjoyable.

But these complaints do not hold back the compilation for what it does how it achieves the perfect emulation of each of the Sonic games and unlockable titles on there. For such a cheap price and for what is featured on there it's a brilliant deal for any hardcore Sonic fan who loves the Mega Drive and Game Gear days. I plan to take a look at Sonic Gems Collection which has more of Sonics classic gems.
