The worst modern Sonic game to date

User Rating: 2 | Sonic: Lost World WIIU

Yea, I went there. I rather play Sonic 06 than this pathetic excuse of a Sonic game. Heck, I'd even play Sonic Forces over it. It is THAT BAD IMHO.

Where do I begin? Well, let's start with the biggest offender: the story and characters.

Oh my goodness... what the heck happened here?! People thought Sonic 06 had a poor and cringe worthy story? They thought the characters in Sonic 06 were poorly portrayed? Sonic Lost World makes it looks Sonic Adventure in comparison. I'm not even close to joking! I'll get to the story eventually, but for now, the characters to me were the bigger offender between them, so let's talk about them first.

The characters in this game are just awful and horribly portrayed. Some of the worst writing and characterization I've ever seen for a Sonic game. Beginning with the least offenders, the Deadly Six. Yea, these characters were the least of the game's problems when it came to characterization and that's because there wasn't much to them. They were cardboard cutout stereotypes, nothing more. They weren't even that offensive about it, just boring and pointless.

Then we have Eggman. Eggman ironically was not that bad either. He was underutilized if anything. He should have been angry if anything and shown his disgust more for our "heroes" since he was just doing what he always did before Sonic messed everything up. Oh, I'll get to him eventually, but let's move on.

Next, Amy Rose and Knuckles. Yea, they weren't technically that bad since they weren't shown much in the game, but that's part of my issue with them. They're just there in the background for the most part. At least Amy Rose sorta has a role in this game I guess, but Knuckles? What the heck is he doing here? He is by far the most pointless character. All he does is stand around talking about how he would be taking care of business so much better than Sonic would, and yet in the background, he's being trampled by chaos. Yea... am I supposed to find that funny? Because I don't! If anything, I find it sad because that's how useless SEGA had made him as of late. Heck, I would even go so far as to say he was more useful in Sonic Boom. At least that Knuckles did stuff.

We now get to Orbot and Cubot, who were just flat out annoying and almost as pointless as Knuckles. Seriously, why are these characters here? Eggman doesn't need them! All they do is stand around acting like pathetic comic relief, telling dumb jokes and bad puns. Just... why? Hey, SEGA, here's a tip for you. If you're going to give Eggman comic relief assistants, ACTUALLY MAKE THEM FUNNY! Instead, they're some of the worst characters I've ever seen. Scratch and Grounder in AOSTH were funnier than this. Heck, Decoe and Bocoe were better in comparison in Sonic X too. At least they actually contributed if nothing else. I swear, if it wasn't for our next two offenders, they'd be at the top of the list, but alas, they were even topped somehow. Let's get to it.

The second worst character of Sonic Lost World, we finally get to none other than Sonic himself. Oh boy... where do I even begin with him? I'm seriously getting Archie Sonic flashbacks here, and I mean the bad ones. Like in Archie Sonic, this Sonic is just despicable. He picks on Eggman for no other reason than the lulz, thinks its funny to smack away his conch and then doesn't act like he cares when it causes a serious problem for them and the world. And when it comes to taking actual responsibility, he completely misses the ball. When Tails gets captured, his line of dialogue was just painful. Yea, he admits he screwed up, but instead of blaming himself for not listening to Tails about that trap, he says, "I was too slow to save my buddy."

SERIOUSLY, SONIC?! ARE YOU THAT DENSE!? Tails got captured because YOU WOULDN'T LISTEN TO REASON! Stop being so blind and own up! What makes it even worse is that Sonic apologizes to Tails for something he didn't even do! He should have said at the end of the game, "Hey, Tails, I'm sorry for not listening you earlier and getting you captured. I'll try to do a better job for now on."

Instead, he's apologizing for not "trusting Tails". which again, NEVER HAPPENED! Ugh, I could go on, but I think it's pretty obvious who's #1 on this list of being the worst character. So yea, let's not beat around the bush. The worst and most offensive character of this game is none other than Tails himself.

I... I'm at a complete loss for words here. What the heck did these despicable writers do to this once cute and lovable sidekick?! Tails is by far the worst and most unbearable to hear and watch. I mean, listening to some of his dialogue, I swear I'm listening to Dexter from Dexter's laboratory. He is horribly mean spirited, cruel, even acting like he's better than everyone else. The way he talks to Eggman and Sonic was just sickening.

Beginning with Eggman, Tails just acts like he hates Eggman with a venomous passion, even insulting his intelligence as a scientist to the point it was cringe worthy. Yea, I know they're enemies and all, but this was just uncalled for. Eggman didn't deserve this kind of hate. If Tails should have been more angry at anyone, it should have been Sonic, for it was BECAUSE OF HIM they were in this mess to begin with.

Speaking of Sonic, Tails does show his anger towards him too, but not because he screwed them over, but because he thinks, "Sonic doesn't trust him." What? WHAT?! Are you serious!? After all the times Tails and Eggman have worked together, NOW he has a problem with it? Just... why? No, seriously, JUST WHY?! What makes it worse is that it comes completely out of left field. There were no warning signs at all or any reasons to justify this. It's just, "You trust Eggman more than me, Sonic, so now I hate you."

No, seriously, that was what Tails was implying, and it's by far one of the worst moments of this game. To me, the absolute worst moment of all is the ending when Tails smugly rubs it in Sonic and Eggman's face that he was right the whole time when clearly he wasn't. He couldn't have known Eggman would pull that stunt at the end. I mean, he didn't in Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06, so why would he assume he'd do it now?

Ugh... I think I better move on. Just thinking about this has gotten me steamed. Last thing I'll say about this is, "SHAME ON YOU, SEGA!" How dare you make Tails, one of the better written characters of the earlier games this horrible and needlessly cruel! It just dumbfounds me how they can't write him properly anymore. If he's not being a Dexter like jerk like in Sonic Lost World, he's being a useless coward like in Sonic Forces. Seriously, SEGA, it's not hard to write Tails. Just make him smart, competent but likable. IT'S NOT FREAKIN ROCKET SCIENCE!

Anyway, moving on to the actual story. To be frank, I really don't have much to say about it. Oh, it's an awful story, don't get me wrong, but there's just no meat to it at all. It's pretty much, Eggman has turned on a world energy sucking machine and our heroes have to stop it before the damage is permanent. The End.

It's not a bad premise to be honest, but the execution, much like Sonic Forces, is utterly dreadful. This was SEGA's other botched attempt at telling a serious story and it flopped even harder than Forces did. Why? Because like with Forces, there is absolutely no backbone to the story at all. It's all completely gutless on top of being soulless. A simple solution would have been a game mechanic similar to Majora's mask where the player has a time limit to save the world from Eggman's machine. If they fail, all of Sonic's friends die along with all the forest critters and the world is completely barren of life. It's really that simple of fix to make this game's plot actually worth something. Same with Tails possibly being a robot too. All they had to do was give the player some urgency to save Tails before the damage was permanent and that would have made this story alot more engaging and possibly tragic. You know, actually make the player care about what's going on and wanting to save everyone.

But no... this is SEGA we're talking about here, the kings of being cowards when it comes to actually showing any heart and guts in a story. It's all cotton candy and ice cream for them. And you wonder why Nintendo has blown you into the weeds one hundred times over... -.-

Anyway, since this is a game review, let's talk about the actual gameplay. Well, to be frank, there's even less to say because this gameplay is the epitome of ripoff. It's Mario Galaxy meshed in with Classic Sonic. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yea, the gameplay isn't "terrible". It's functional for the most part, but I have no respect for a game that rips off another game's style and doesn't do anything creative or interesting with it. I wouldn't have cared it being a rip off of Mario Galaxy and Classic Sonic had they actually done something new with it to make it unique.

But nope... that's below SEGA. They're allergic to creativity. Heck, they couldn't even show any in Sonic Forces when doing the OC creation mode. It's bare bones, much like this game.

While the Boom games are technically the worst of the bunch, when it comes to the main Sonic games, Sonic Lost World is the absolute worst among them. Say what you will about the problems in games like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06, but they were at least alot more engaging and interesting. Not to mention those actually tried in comparison to this train wreck of a Sonic game.

Again, shame on you, SEGA! For someone's who trying to dig themselves out of the pit you made in Sonic 06, you're digging an even bigger one with games like Lost World and Sonic Forces because those games could have been really good, but because you don't care, they were not.

I have no faith Sonic will ever be good again under SEGA"s banner. They just don't care anymore. It's so, so sad... :(
