Hardcore Sonic Fans Stay Away!

User Rating: 2.5 | Sonic Classic Collection (Limited Edition) DS
Hello, my name is Dan and I have been a sonic fan since I was a little kid, roughly 5 or 6 years old. I love the sega genesis. I also love sonic. I have just about every sonic collection out there, minus a few of the lesser known ones (ex. Sonic Jam). I was so excited to play my favorite sonic games on the DS. I was EXTREMELY disappointed as soon as I turned it on. First of all, the spine of the DS case itself is rather plan and just says "Sonic Classic Collection" with a blue background. I do like the little sonic icon at the DS menu. But honestly, as foreshadowing, that's about all I like with this game. Okay so, as soon as you click on the game. It brings you to a screen that has no audio, and it wants you to select a language, the options are English, Franqais, and Espanol. I don't mind this, I guess, but it pops up every single time you play the game. Annoying. Then you click the A button and it brings you to a painful similar looking menu except the options are games, illustrations, and credits. ALSO, on the top screen, it says. copyright 2009 Sega. I'm pretty sure this game came out in 2010. Considering the release date wasn't until March 4th 2010.

So, let's work backwards. Starting with the credits. I do like the credits because they show pictures of sonic, knuckles, tails, and some emeralds/super/master emerald(s). Actually there's a picture of sonic turning super sonic while his spikes are still blue, I like this. But still it says 2009 on the bottom V.V...

So, then there's the illustrations, it plays the same music from the title screen and the credits. They are all pictures that have been seen before in many of the sonic collections already out. I don't know, I wish there was more.

Finally, my biggest issue with this game, the game play. As soon as you choose a game to play. It plays the sonic effect of sonic drowning. Why did pick that one? Each game has a summary of the story in each game. They always call Dr. Robitnik "Dr. Eggman" which makes me upset. This clears up to me just who exactly what audience they were trying to attract, little kids who watch Sonic X. And yes I know the name Egg and Eggman has been hinted at. But to me, it was always Dr. Robitnik. But that's just a personal thing I get mad about. So the audio is pretty lousy. The noise it makes when sonic gets hit and loses his rings is just really sad. The game play is miserably slow and laggy. The sonics on wii's VC are perfect. I really thought that after almost 20 years sega could port sonics games nicely, but no. They are a miserable version. Sonic isn't supposed to be slow. The screen is like, zoomed in slightly, so you don't even get to see the edges like you can in every other version. For example, in Sonic & Knuckles, when you play as Knuckles, eggrobo drops a bomb and explodes near you, Knuckles it sent back by the explosion but he is half off the screen! That never was the case on the genesis games or any of the ported games. And when you play with tails following you, the game lags even more. In fact this game looks pretty ugly all over the place. There should be no give and take with sonic. Sonic games are amazing, I LOVE them, but they are all over 15 years old, and they should not be ported this badly. I'm pretty sure the DS can handle 4 sega genesis games.

One last point, the "Save Anywhere" system is not like the sonic mega collection plus kinds, where you can literally save wherever you want, in this one, you can save and it just saves the last level that you were on. So say you beat a level and beat the boss and saved before you freed the animals then shut the game off, it would start you up at the same level act 2.

I paid 30 dollars for this game because I was excited to play sonic portably. I am definitely disappointed. If you really love sonic, and you feel like you can deal with a horribly slow refresh rate, laggy graphics, poor audio, incorrect screen sizing, and games that incorrectly date when they come out, then I guess this is for you. I'm really not a sonic hater, I am just very picky and I feel this was poorly put together and that should not be the case with games that are 15 years old. That's plenty of time to get with the picture.
