The cancellation of Sonic X-treme was Sonic's point of no return. We had no solid fifth generation blockbuster game for sonic to appear on. So what did Sega do at a time like this? Go back to Knutsford in Cheshire to ask Traveller's tales to port their already unsuccessful game onto the Saturn, and hope it'll cheer up the downcast faces of Sonic fans. It didn't. What was worst was, Sega assumed that one weak redux was good enough for them to make spinoff sonic titles, which ended up being even worse than this! (Sonic R, at least). Perhaps if Sonic Team had been bothered to make a full out and out 3D sonic game for the saturn, or not been jerks and let STI just use the freakin' NiGHTS engine, sonic might be a bit more on track, and next-gen wouldn't have been a failure.
There are a few graphical enhancements that the graphically inferior Mega Drive couldn't cope with, such as more detailed textures, fog, and the odd polygonal structure, like the bridges in GGZ. it also had a rather nice special stage which was much better than the MD version. However, this just wasn't enough, and wasn't very successful.
So, the Saturn version of this game was much better than the original, but the Saturn was capable of a whole lot more.
