Unique, sandbox-style game experience

User Rating: 8.5 | Sleeping Dogs PS3
Pros: unique Far East setting, engaging main storyline, plenty of trophies to keep you busy; brutal, satisfying combat; varied and interesting side missions; great voice acting.

Cons: a few bugs and glitches

The term "sandbox-style" always seems to inevitably lead to comparisons to the venerable GTA franchise. Sleeping Dogs, however, represents a unique diversion from the GTA formula.

It's true that Sleeping Dogs retains some "sandbox" staples: plenty of side missions (e.g. gambling, racing, stealing particular cars, collectables), a boatload of trophies, and the feeling of a non-lineal progression. But the unique Far East setting provides a backdrop for a satisfying gaming experience.

The varied art direction and locations allows the player to feel that they are truly immersed in the Hong Kong underworld. Docks, boats, beaches, neon signs, and Chinese culture come to life with vibrancy and detail.

Combat focuses on hand-to-hand combat (at least for the first three-quarters of the game), and this type of combat is varied, brutal, and completely fun. With over twenty combinations, including leg/arm breaks, roundhouse kicks, grapples, and throws, every punch and kick seems responsive and fluid. The highlight, however, is the ability to use environmental objects to perform brutal kills. It never gets old.

The main story is too satisfying; definitely not filler. Almost thirty main missions provide a great deal of variety. Plus, the voice acting is superb, with a number of name actors providing the voices of main characters.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at the depth and variety in this game. While only expecting a momentary diversion, Sleeping Dogs turned out to be a satisfying experience that I recommend to anyone who enjoys the "sandbox" game style.
