Hey, I've got some beads...what will you give me for them?

Ah, Colonization....a fun game that played fairly well. The premise is that you are an explorer from one of four biggie powers of the day (England, Spain, France, or Dutch-land)...you start in a ship from Europe and set out on the vast sea....eventually, you bump in to America and start a-colonizing....soon, you will meet up with natives, which the game treats in a 'revolutionary' way for the early 1990s: they weren't necessarily 'just sub-humans to be conquered', but could be valuable allies (albeit still never as powerful or organized [in the game] as the Europeans)...still, one could also elect to convert or crush them (which sometimes one or both may be necessary)...it was an interesting treatment. Eventually, you develop a nice colonial structure, and soon you have options to break away from the 'motherland'....if I remember correctly, you must do this by 1820....if not, you're a colony forever and your score is hurt (how's that for using you're and your in the same sentence lol).....if you do break away, it's a fairly tough road to hoe! Unless you're very good and build a large colonial army/navy before the breakaway (which I managed to do just a couple of times), you will be in fairly big trouble....if you are lucky enough to beat the motherland's troops enough, a major foreign power will ally with you and provides ships, troops, etc. to help out (much how the French did with America....as a matter of fact, the USA might very well have not existed save for the French!)....then VICTORY! This game has much more to offer....hidden treasure, micromanagement, and the like....good classic gaming fun from the 1990s!
