Shattered Horizon sets the bar pretty high, game-play wise and requirements wise.

User Rating: 7.5 | Shattered Horizon PC
Shattered Horizon is the debut game from Futuremark Games Studio, and it aims to capture a totally different feel in the FPS department. What sets SH apart from other FPS games is the fact that it takes place in space, where gravity no longer applies and exploration is opened in all directions.

Concept wise this game nails it, as it really feels different from all the other FPS games. But with this new element, new problems arise. It can be extremely difficult to orient yourself while playing. The maps are dark, and the only source of light comes from the sun, which only illuminates certain angles of the terrain, and mining bases found on the various asteroid fields. The difficultly of orientation also means that you will need to memorize many of the maps, so you can take shortcuts to control points. The controls are easy to learn, but hard to master. You will find yourself floating mindlessly the first time you try, and will gradually get the hang of it.

The selection of weapons has been buffed up by the latest update, and now there is distinguished selection, to suit your style of play.

The game's real weakness comes in the hardware department. Shattered Horizon is poorly optimized and requires you to have a dx10 card to be able to play, this means that dx9 has been ruled out, and that you need to have Vista/7 installed to play the game. The visuals look good, but are nothing impressive, so it baffles me that the game is such a system hog. I cannot complain since I have a 3.0 Ghz quad core CPU and a 58xx dx11 ATi card, but when my buddy downloaded the game for a free weekend at steam he was surprised that his system could not follow with the game's requirements, despite having a 8800 GTX and a Q6600.

Overall the game can be a lot of fun, because of its original setting. But be prepared to be disappointed if you do not meet at least the "recommended" specs, because you will lag!
