A satisfying 2D shooter that is well worth the price.

User Rating: 9 | Shadow Complex X360
If you own an XBOX 360, go download Shadow Complex right now. Don't worry, you can come back to this review after you're done. This has got to be one of the best Arcade downloads to date. Chair has crafted a fine side-scrolling-shooter that both revives the side-scrollers of yore and reinvents them with modern gaming tech. With an excellent mix of shooting, platforming, exploration, and environmental puzzles, Shadow Complex should appeal to a wide range of gamers. Plus the graphics, presentation and sound design are top-notch. The story itself might be a bit contrived, but as you play the game, you just don't care.

Many people have likened Shadow Complex to the 2D Metroid games. Since I've never played those, I can't compare. All I can say is that I very much enjoyed playing Complex. The gameplay is satisfying with enough eye candy and terrific sound effects to make this 2D game leap into the age of 3D with nary a sacrifice in gameplay. Unlike the original 2D games of the past, Shadow Complex does play in a 3D environment, which adds a lot of depth to the game (pun intended).

As you progress through the game, you gain better weapons and gadgets, so that by the final showdown, you are one kick-butt dude. The pacing of the game allows you to savor each addition to your arsenal, and with certain gadgets, you can return to past locations and get to hidden areas unobtainable before. And there are plenty of hidden areas and items to find. Replayability is low, but you can play the trials and replay the campaign to level up and increase your stats on the leaderboards. Overall, I feel the game is well worth the 1200 ($15) asking price. Here's hoping for a sequel or expansion packs.
