Blow some bad guys up. Mini-size!

User Rating: 5.7 | Serious Sam Advance GBA
It would seem like this game tries way too hard to follow in the footsteps of its bigger counterparts, and thats what makes it seem like a complete ripoff. The storyline and weapons and enemies make it seem like a Serious Sam game, but the action says otherwise.

The gameplay can be summed up simply as: shoot & scoot. You blow up the badguys in one area and move onto to the next. Repeat. Maybe along the way you find a secret path to unlock a place to turn around and go back to. But not a lot. The games focus is primarily on shooting things, but with the way the controls are, with the d-pad movement a little too loose, it almost seems impossible when youre in an arena trying to stay alive against several high enemies.

The graphics look like your playing Serious Sam on the SNES. the enemies are heavily pixelated, but are recognizable. The areas are similar to what they are supposed to be: Egypt and Rome. But the walls make it seem like youre going through an almost endless loop. The weapons look like theyve come from other SS games, while not on the ground that is.

The sound is mostly repetitve with the music off. Sometimes the sound of a door moving up (I didnt know they had automatic doors in Ancient Egypt & Rome, who knew?), causing you to have to pause it and unpause it to get the sound to stop. The badguy sounds are similar to SS, and the annoying cry of the headless kamikazes are there too. Constantly.

The game can last you up to about 2 or 3 days. That all depends on how often you get bored with doing the same thing over and over. Also with their only being 2 levels, it completely hinders what the game might have been. If you go for the level bonus and complete it under a certain time, it keeps it short. But if you want to go off looking for secrets, it may extend it a little.

I like Serious Sam. Its fresh, its new, its something good. This game could have been a breath of fresh air for SS players. But instead its a drink of water before you drown.
