SSP promises to deliver smash hits, but instead delivers three mediocre, but surprisingly addictive games.

User Rating: 5.5 | Sega Smash Pack GBA
Before I owned a Nintendo DS, I was one of those gameboy advance junkies who would buy games from the bargain bin when I couldn't afford a full-price game. My addiction eventually led to the purchase of Sega Smashpack, which I assumed would be a solid collection of Sega games. When I started it up, I was greeted by a long, unskippable string of credits which would happen every time I turned on the game. To me, it seemed like a lack of effort from the developers or a subliminal message they wanted to send to the kids who played their game. Either way, the game itself was a disappointment. The first game is Ecco the Dolphin, a game where you are a dolphin and you must rescue your friends who were taken away by a magical whirlpool. The controls are solid and it's fun to navigate the watery world and do tricks....for five minutes. After that, the game forces you to do bland and unoriginal puzzles which aren't particularly frustrating, but after a few minutes you'll wonder why you're still playing. It's just not fun. I give Ecco the Dolphin a 5/10. The second game is Golden Axe, which in my opinion is the best game in Sega SmashPack. This is the only game in the collection that actually has some alternate modes that you can play, but the main focus is arcade mode. You start by selecting one of the three characters that you can choose from. The dwarf is low on hp and has a strong attack, the guy is medium in all aspects, and the girl has the most hp and little strength. When you start the game, you must defeat every enemy on the screen before you can progress. It's pretty fun, but the story is fairly basic and shallow and it would have been nice to level up your characters. I give Golden Axe a 6.5/10. The next game is Sonic Spinball. This is one of the more addicting games to play in Sega SmashPack despite it's unconvincing physics. You basically hit sonic around on a pinball table, trying to collect the three chaos emeralds in each world. After you collect all three, you battle a boss to proceed to the next level. It gets pretty hard later in the game and it's a blast to play. The only thing that makes Sonic Spinball a dissapointment is that it has a high score table, which could add to it's replay value, but it's just a tease since the game doesn't keep track of anything, even in the other games. I give Sonic Spinball a 6.5/10. Sega SmashPack is fun to play for an afternoon, but you will lose interest in it pretty quick. There's no incentive to keep playing, and there is no reason to play in the first place since the game won't save any of your scores. If your a Sega fan, pick up a console version. They have much more games available and will give you more bang for your buck.
