Scaler is a satisfying and light-hearted adventure that is underrated

User Rating: 8 | Scaler PS2
Whilst Scaler is not quite in the same league as Jak & Daxter or Ratchet & Clank, it is nevertheless a fun and rewarding 3D platformer. The difficulty ramps up quite a lot in the later levels, requiring quite a bit of trial and error, but giving a certain sense of satisfaction when achieved. Item collection is minimal, reduced only to klokkies (read money for upgrades) and crystal gems, which are by no means necessary to collect for any reason other than a sense of completion.

The levels are well-designed, intricate and multi-pathed, although each path is fairly linear so there is no danger of getting lost. The worlds look suitably colourful, stuffed with wierd-looking alien plantlife and imaginatively designed enemies.

Your main weapons are your claws and whip-like tongue. There are also a variety of different incarnations that you must 'learn' and transform into at various stages in order to progress (eg, a little bomb-carrying creature, a flying one, one that curls into a ball and rolls through the levels at high speed, etc.). These different forms are a nice touch and for the most part fun to play as.

You also have the ability to slide along vines, building up static electricity which you can then unleash to freeze enemies and break open otherwise unopenable containers. The vine sliding is fun, with obstacles that require you to either jump or duck, and these sections can get quite tough in the later levels, though never to the point of frustration

Having said that, other parts of the game are frustrating, such as a couple of on-rails shooting segments which are difficult only because of imprecise controls, but these occurs maybe 3 or 4 times in the game and are very short. Personally, I think these sections could have been scrapped with no detriment to the rest of the game.

All in all, I found Scaler to be great fun and would recommend at least one play through to any fan of 3D platformers.
