Savtehaloz reviews Saints Row, a surprisingly fun GTA clone.

User Rating: 8.5 | Saints Row X360
Most games that try to imitate the GTA series fail miserably, but the developers at Volition have managed to pull it off. The game is immature and isn't able to pull off the humor that we all love in Grand Theft Auto, but it succeeds in other areas.

Gameplay
Instead of using a lock on system, Saints Row features FPS controls on a third person view. This is brilliant and is a plus in my books as it streamlines the shooting aspect of the game. The controls are smooth and responsive and are easier then those present in the console GTA games. Saints Row has many other fun features which seem to borrow a little from GTA San Andreas; you can rob a variety of stores, design your own car, design your own character, choose from a variety of haircuts, clothes and tattoos. You can even take drugs and drink in the game. You also have to reclaim gang territory, which is also similar to that present in GTA San Andreas. One thing different however, is the physics. Running people over or being hit by a car will send your character flying. The game takes advantage of this by having a Insurance Fraud mini game. Although Saints Row is not as gritty and as serious as the GTA series, Saints Row is still fun. Looking back on it now, it was an excellent tie-over between GTA San Andreas and GTA IV.

Sound
The music and radio in Saints Row is pretty much forgettable. Only a few songs such as "TV Riot by the Adored" are worth noting. GTA has much better DJs and songs compared with Saints Row.

Graphics
The graphics are cartoonish and bright compared with the grittiness of GTA. For 2006 and 2007, the graphics are great although for a few hiccups here and there from pop in and frame rate slow downs.

Conclusion
Saints Row was an excellent tie in between the long wait between GTA San Andreas and GTA IV. The game lacks that polish and shine that the GTA series has, but is worth it if your looking for some open-world crime fun outside GTA.
