The best of its kind since, well..."Saints Row 2".

User Rating: 8.5 | Saints Row: The Third X360
After playing SR: The Third for 10 hours, I'd have to say the highlight of the series would have to be "Saints Row 2". While not innovative in the least, SR 2 considerably expanded upon the original game. As a result, it happened to be the best open-world action game since GTA: San Andreas. This second sequel doesn't expand upon part 2 as much as it streamlines. Graphically, it is an improvement over its predecessors, it also feels tighter and contains bigger setpieces. The guys over at Volition must've spent hours playing "Uncharted 2" because thier game now contains big cinematic segments. The first level alone has you firing at bad guys as you're airlifted from a bank, while the second level contains a James Bond-esque segment as you freefall from a jet.

"Saints Row The Third" opens with the Saints popularity at its peak. However, after Johnny Gat is presumably killed, the gang must claim a new city (Steelport) as an act of retribution against a hotshot European mobster. Gameplay-wise, it follows same formula as the second game, but this time customization isn't quite as extensive. Also, plenty of the side-missions are repeats (without the opening cutscenes). Still, you can can now play the story missions without having to earn respect through side-quests. And while there is a smaller arsenal of weapons to choose from, each can be upgraded three times. It's a fair trade-off since the highest upgrade of each weapon has a huge payoff (i.e. incendiary ammo). Additionally, the optional assassinations and carjacking from SR 2 also return. You can also now pose for pics with fans since Saints is a brand now. and find stunt jumps as well as collectible items scattered abroad.

As far online play is concerned, co-op is back and the introduction of "Whored Mode" is a welcome addition. The latter being a silly variation of "horde" modes from other games in which you try to survive waves of increasingly powerful enemies as long as you can. The omission of the competitive modes really sucks. In addition to the main game, there are unlockables in SR 3 which require the player to level up and earn money. As you progress, you'll be able to earn abilities such as dual-wielding weapons and faster health regeneration. Regarding the soundtrack, I have to say that SR 2 had a much better selection of songs. Still, a few 80's tunes and techno club music are great. Overall, the game is a lot of fun with some challenging levels and co-op. While "Saints Row: The Third" is not the highlight the first sequel was, it's still very funny, colorful and over-the-top. A solid fun title.

Pros: Story and optional missions are outright silly fun. Controls are tighter. Co-op can amp up the enjoyment.

Cons: Gameplay elements has been stripped down from the previous game (less clothing options, less weapons, less vehicles, etc.). Completing side missions can be repetitive. Story mode isn't too long. Multiplayer competitive mode is no longer featured.
