The more you kill the more powerful you become, what a concept. That is the best way to describe Rygars interesting level up system. This wasnt a game, it was a quest. The first action/RPG with an easy to grasp arcade gameplay feel to it. This game also had an interesting free roaming feel to it in the fact that you could travel back and forth from areas you had already beaten. The more I write about this game, the more I realize just how revolutionary it was. Thanks to a strategically placed top down level which acted as a doorway to all the other stages. Tools and equipment located in the side scrolling levels gave you further access to the doorways in the top down level. In each side scrolling level there was a door that required you to use a specific tool to reach. And behind each of these doors there was a wise old man who was there to give you more powers or tools to progress in the game.

AAAH, and the boss battles were magnificent. Each boss was distinctive in thier own way, but every boss battle was a perfect mix of reflex, timing, and powering up at just the right time. You had 3 temporary power up commands at your disposal.

Life regeneration- self explanitory
Extend- Added lenght to your discarmor (main weapon)
Attack and assail- Power up attacks

It was up to you to decide which was most beneficial for the task at hand.

In a time dominated by oversimplified 2D gaming, this game possessed a complexity you just didnt have in its time. It also lacked a save feature, so unless you wanted to leave the game on pause for hours or days at a time, It was an experience that kept you from beginning to end in a single sitting.

Still, one of the best, and definately a great moment in my gaming history!
