Stong F2P European import MMO with some aspects of WoW, and a good mix of flexibility and challenges.

In an online gaming world saturated by a mix of F2P & P2P MMO's, Runes of Magic, a global MMO, developed and published in Germany, is a good transition for those bored with WoW or for those looking for a F2P version of WoW. The devs and publishers, in this case, get their "supplemented" income through diamond purchases, in which players can puchase a particular set of diamonds for a particular server of their choice, shared among their characters in that server.

While the list of servers isn't as numerous as WoW, there are multiple different servers available, with 6 U.S. servers (4 PvE & 2 PvP) available. In each server, players can create up to 8 characters, and customize their dimensions and features to their heart's content. So you could have a hunky human warrior/knight, a well-endowed magess/priestess, or a small but speedy rogue/scout. The recent addition of RoM's Chapter II: The Elven Prophecies content brought players the option to create Elven characters, and can choose either a druid, and/or a beastmaster-like warden. Each character can choose two classes--one to start, and a second starting at lvl 10--and can toggle between the two at that character's own house. While bank inventory cannot be shared between player's characters on a server, players can rent out additional inventory slots, for about $12 worth in diamonds every 180 days--a huge bargain in today's economy. Item shop also provides some nice goodies for diamonds or tokens acquired from doing daily, repeatable quests. Particular purchases yield rubies as a bonus incentive, and each day, a particular item is put up for sale.

Gameplay-wise, it has a WoW-like feel, where players do a mix of fighting, resource-gathering, and crafting; the latter two being necessary to acquire certain elite skills based on the class combinations. There are quests that can be done solo, while others require a well-built party and/or a healthy dose of luck. Some quests give set armor pieces, which, when combined with other pieces, yield great stat-boosts; big rewards for taking on big challenges. That said, there is alot of flexibility in what the players want to do with their characters, by distributing training pts. to boost up certain skills and abilities; so one could make a melee-savvy warrior/knight who uses 2-handed weapons; or an Elf that combines the beastmastery of a warden with either strong warrior skills to deal with multiple mobs, or nuke away as a mage while the pet tanks. The graphics are quite nice for a F2P game, which is why this game requires such a decent high-end system.

The audio is also decent, and the BGM is decent enough too. Getting around the game's vast world is also decent, with mounts available for rent or "acquired at high levels", portals to use at key settlements, or a mix of portal skills and scrolls. The community is relatively decent for a F2P game, although you will get bugged by those gold-spammers throughout a game session.

Technically, the downloading and installing of updates can be slow, especially for someone just starting out. Depending on your bandwidth, it can be hours before you can install the game, and then an hour or two more to patch up. Otherwise, there are fairly minimal bugs and glitches, and the game itself seems safe enough--with a few crashes here and there.

For those looking for a F2P alternative to WoW, or if you want something that feels like WoW without the monthly subscription and is manageable under a casual setting, then Runes of Magic is a solid MMO game to try out.
