After I played the demo for this game, I decided that I might as well pay the $20 to get the Gold Edition at Target (four years after it first came out!) It was well worth it. I found myself immersed, enjoying the turn-based portions almost as much as the amazing combat. With so much detail and things to do, such as forging alliances, negotiating ceasefires and trade relations, as well as moving your armies and fleets across a 3D map and managing the cities you've conquered, it really makes you feel like you are a major military commander. I would not hesitate to call this game a "grand strategy" game. The only real problems I have is when you have conquered a lot of land, and most of your cities are Huge Cities, and the population starts to get unhappy. There's not much you can do. If things get bad, there will be a rebellion, which could lead to a civil revolt, where your army is kicked out, and the city is then rebel controlled. This has happened to me once already. However, despite this, the rest of the turn-based portions are great. Combat in this game is incredible (and historically accurate!) Although the battalions are all made of clones and use identical attacks, you look past this when you are controlling thousands and when you zoom in to watch the fighting. Though combat is more realistic in "Medieval II", it is still impressive. What impressed me was how the legionary attacks are presented. In true historical fashion, the infantry throws their javelins first, and then charges. All things considered, this is a wonderful game worth however much you may spend on it/
