A fun romping RPG/Action Beat-Em-Up

User Rating: 10 | Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari NES
This is one of those little NES gems that fell into so many players laps back towards the end of the NES era.

What made this game stand out was the fact it was easy to just pick up and get into. Add the stat building and having two player Co-Op and you had one great Beat-Em-Up.

Like any Beat-Em-Up of its era, you had the cliche storyline: Main guys girl gets kidnapped by a gang and held for ransom. The story is up to you and a friend to fight your way to her and save her from them.

Along the way you'll meet colorful gangs, all with their own personalities and quip phrases (some of them even running away from you during the fights). The fighting does get tougher the farther in you go, but you have help: Numerous shops throughout the City to help build your character into an ultimate fighting machine. You'll quaff down drinks, eat whole plates (literally) of food, and read books.

And who can forget the best part, it's Co-Op! You and a buddy teaming up to take down the baddies together. In it's day it was the best there was for such genre.

The only quip I would have with the old NES version was the "Password" you had to write down each time in order to save all the progress you'd made on your character. Oh for the modern days of autosaves!

Regardless of that feature, this is still a great game and definitely worth a run-through with a buddy.
