This was easily one of the best games on the Mega Drive.
Ristar is quite a simple little platformer, following the story of a little star (called Ristar) who seeks to rescue the galaxy from the clutches of the evil Greedy, who'd also imprisoned Ristar's father. Ristar has the ability to stretch his arms and grab onto things, which he can use to access different areas in the levels he explores, or to kill enemies.
The game is reasonably challenging, featuring you travelling from planet to planet, exploring levels and defeating bosses. There are two acts to each stage before you reach a boss, and in some certain stages there may be puzzles to solve, which keeps the gameplay feeling fresh.
The levels all have memorable and fantastic designs, and everything looks absolutely wonderful and colourful. As for the music, it is absolutely amazing and a joy to listen to, featuring alongside quirky little sound effects which seem to make the game all that more memorable.
Ristar doesn't have the same sense of speed as Sonic does, and seems relatively slow-paced in comparison, yet despite that still has a charm of it's own that easily makes it one of the best games ever released on the Mega Drive. This is definitely a game well worth looking into; whether you're downloading it via Wii Virtual Console or buying it for the original Mega Drive, Ristar is not a game to be missed out on.
