A hard, slow start with a surprisingly compelling finish. A must get if you have the patience.

User Rating: 7.5 | Risen PC
When I started playing Risen, I despised it. The combat system was immensely frustrating, not to mention I had no orientation to it going in. The game throws you into the mix of things, into the wilderness, with naught but a club or hunting knife to find to kill or be killed.
After making it off the beach, you begin to understand more about this island you're on, that things aren't quite as they seem. As you go on, you can choose certain paths that lead you to two entirely different sides of the story.

There isn't much to be said about this game that hasn't already been said. When I started the game, the combat had me so frustrated, I took the game out after an hour of attempting to play, and I hid it away for six months. After those six months of experiencing other game worlds, I decided to come back to it. It was still frustrating, but I began to become immersed in the game after a while. The main points to the game are:

Good: -Impressively designed world
-Interesting story
-Well developed community makes the people and towns around you seem real
-Finding new ways to thrive with skills such as smithing and thieving is a blast
-Occasionally humorous dialogue
-Creative dungeon puzzles

Bad: -Terrible, slow combat system
-Slow start (the game isn't driven by compelling story right away)
-Sparse array of armor to choose from
-Limited magic spells to chose from, should you choose that path

Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone who loves medieval-style RPG's, but expect a difficult and slow start.
