World of Final Fantasy Review

It's a small world after all.

World of Final Fantasy feels like a game that celebrates the series’ massive legacy while also making it friendlier to a younger audience. Unfortunately, it stumbles in a few key places, making it more of an awkward mixer than the all-encompassing RPG party players might be anticipating.

Things don't exactly get off to a rollicking start. After a cryptic initial cutscene, you’re treated to a too-long set of introductory cinematics that offer little in the way of actual introduction. You meet fraternal twins Lann and Reynn, who apparently have been living a normal life in a city working at a coffee shop--until a mysterious woman and a strange creature give them surprising news. The twins learn that they--and their mother--were once important figures in a world named Grymoire filled with monsters and tiny people known as Lilikin. It’s a pretty head-scratching introduction--and not in a good way. It doesn’t help that Enna vanishes while calling herself “god.” The duo are left with Tama as their guide, who has a speech the-pattern that will very quickly start to drive you the-bonkers.

No Caption Provided

When the twins get to Grymoire, they discover they can change from tiny to normal size to get around and interact with the populace. They also can “imprism” the Mirage monsters that roam Grymoire, turning them into battling companions. Bad things are afoot in Grymoire, however--a group of armor-clad figures called the Bahamutian Army have annexed numerous territories in the realm under the guise of benevolence, though their true goal is to enact a complex prophecy involving plenty of good old fashioned chaos and destruction.

Grymoire is a beautiful place filled with otherworldly environments that, combined with the cute monsters that lurk within, capture a whimsical, storybook feel. When they’re not traversing the wilderness, Lann and Reynn wind up in towns based on locations from previous Final Fantasy games, such as Nibelheim from Final Fantasy VII. It’s here that the duo will usually encounter familiar (but cuter) Final Fantasy characters who harbor the souls of “champions” and use their abilities to help Lann and Reynn defeat the Bahamutian Army’s evil machinations.

Despite its chibi-sized Final Fantasy heroes and focus on monster collecting, you won't be summoning an army of adorable Final Fantasy characters to do battle for you. Most of your battling companions are of the monstrous variety--you can only summon famous Final Fantasy characters to battle after dealing and accruing enough damage, and only after meeting them in the story and acquiring their Champion Medal. They don’t show up for long--they just unleash a special attack and then peace out, acting much like summoned monsters would in a traditional Final Fantasy game.

Despite its chibi-sized Final Fantasy heroes and focus on monster collecting, you won't be summoning an army of adorable Final Fantasy characters to do battle for you.

That isn’t to say that combat is a completely by-the-numbers affair. Lann and Reynn can have up to four monsters accompany them in fights. Every monster is assigned a size--small, medium, or large--and you can “stack” the twins and monsters into a cute critter column to fight with. Stacks offer a lot of benefits: characters in a stack pool their health, ability points, attack and defense power, skills, and elemental resistances together to create a powerful entity that can withstand heavy hits and deal more damage than the characters would individually--at the cost of the turns each individual character would get in battle.

Characters in a stack can also combine certain skills and turn them into more powerful techniques. For example, if two stacked characters have water magic, you’ll get access to a higher-level water spell. Enemies can also stack up for similar benefits, so sometimes you’ll want to use attacks that can topple a stack of characters. When a stack collapses, everyone in the tower winds up stunned for a turn, giving you free rein to smack them around. Naturally, your towers are just as vulnerable to collapsing, so you need to be careful when you see signs of wobbling.

No Caption Provided

Of course, before you can stack up critters like a pile of pancakes, you’ll need to capture them. While many monsters become catchable after a few simple attacks, others require very specific actions before you can imprism them: You may have to hit them with a particular status ailment, give them an item, or use a particular style of attack. While this helps make the game’s monster-catching element a bit more dynamic, it can be extremely annoying in practice. You may run into some one-time-encounter monster in the field, only to discover that you don't have the skills in your current party necessary to capture them. You can't run from these fights, nor can you swap out monsters in battle, leaving you no choice but to beat the rare monster normally and cry over the missed opportunity.

That’s only one of a pile of little annoyances that drag down the World of Final Fantasy experience. The battles, even at max speed, move at a glacial pace, making it almost necessary to hold R1 to fast forward through them at all times (and tiring your index finger in the process). Every monster has a “Mirage Board” similar to the Sphere Grid and Crystarium from Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIII, respectively; these unlock various skills and abilities by using points earned from leveling up. These kinds of skill-up grids work nicely in role-playing games with limited character sets, but they become a royal pain to manage when you’re juggling numerous creatures in and out of your party. Most monsters in the game have alternate forms that you can access when they reach a certain level, but these variations don’t retain many of the skills of their previous incarnations, and the new forms have their own Mirage Boards to futz around with.

The overarching story, exploration, and monster collecting didn’t interest me nearly as much as seeing which Final Fantasy character I might encounter next.

Dungeons tend to be very linear (and they’re less fun to explore than they are to look at), and you’ll sometimes come to a puzzle or obstacle that requires a specific monster skill or set of properties in order to progress. If you don’t have the right monsters in your current party you must either use an expensive item or go back to a teleport/save point to swap in the correct monsters or capture some new beasts with the properties you need (and perhaps grind them up to unlock the necessary skill to progress).

At least there’s some reward for suffering through these aggravations: The dialogue and character writing are both incredibly charming, filled with lots of peppy exchanges between the twins and the assorted NPCs they encounter (the aforementioned Tama excepted). A little bit into the game, you get the ability to participate in various character vignettes starring the Final Fantasy characters. These segments are ridiculously adorable and tons of fun to watch. The further I advanced in World of Final Fantasy, the more it felt like I was just playing to see the little interactions among the twins and the other characters--the overarching story, exploration, and monster collecting didn’t interest me nearly as much as seeing which Final Fantasy character I might encounter next. The game is ultimately worse when it stops being cute and goofy and tries to tell a serious story.

Unfortunately, you have to put up with a fair amount of frustration and filler before you get to enjoy the best of what World of Final Fantasy has to offer, namely charming writing and Final Fantasy fan service. If you’re willing to put up with some of the game’s mundane sequences, you’ll get some enjoyment out of it, but if you’re not a Final Fantasy fanatic, the magic in these moments may be lost altogether.

The Good

  • Gorgeous environments filled with charming characters
  • Punchy, funny dialogue make NPC interactions highly enjoyable
  • The stacking system adds a nice bit of combat strategy

The Bad

  • The story is confusing at first and takes its time getting moving
  • Battles are slow even when you’re fast-forwarding
  • Interactions with classic FF characters are limited
  • Tama has the world’s most annoying speech pattern

@venomenace83: I played and prefer FF4-9 to the newer games and didn't find nearly as much enjoyment in this game as you seemed to. It does have some fanservice but it felt soulless and the tedious micromanaging of your "pokemon" only made things worse. 6/10 is pretty generous for this game

Can't wait to pick this up. I'm old school and prefers turn based rpg games. I'll wait for a small price drop because I need the Last Guardian in my life lol.

Dear Heidi Kemps your review is an insult to the Final Fantasy fan base. I allmost didn't buy the game based on your review but in the end i gave it a chance and omg did i had an positive surprise.

I'm not a hard player i'm not even so young anymore and a had the chance to play final fantasy VII , VIII on it-s release and several other titles and i can say that it has all the elements of a final fantasy game.

Did you ever played one of final fantasy titles before writing this down ??

It-s really an offense to this game

The game is really really good on many many perspectives: gameplay, progression, monsters, world, characters, voice, music and so on

and i'm telling you i really get borred very fast .. but this game which supossedly is for kids kept me entertained for a lot of time .. and it still is

Please next time write your review more carefully or let someone which really likes this kind of games to play it and review it

Tama's speech pattern threw me off so I changed the language to Japanese instead. It is much more bearable to listen to.

I'm enjoying this game, it's a lot of fun. If you are on the fence I'd recommend trying the demo. But if you like Final Fantasy then you will like this game for sure. Also I hate to admit it, but it has Pokemon elements in it which I also enjoy haha.

Wow... author understood nothing.

"but these variations don’t retain many of the skills of their previous incarnations"

-They actually retain every single skill that isn't green. It's a pretty simplistic system. And if you're going to a form that's entirely different, it retains all of it's levels with a brand new set of SP (so you can easily fill out the grid). Bet you ripped on FF XIII because switching to a new class meant you didn't keep all abilities either :eyeroll:

Game is an 8/10, really. 6 is extremely low.

I played the demo over the weekend and I really enjoyed it, graphical style is cute and game play is typical of a turn based RPG. I couldn't give it a score or anything however I feel that a 6/10 is rather harsh, I will give the demo another go and if I'm still enjoying it the second time around, I will purchase it.

I do like the fact that they've offered a demo as not many developers do now-a-days.

"The story is confusing at first and takes its time getting moving"

Umm have you ever played a Final fantasy game before? Also, this means you like to know the full plot of a movie or game ahead of time before playing? What a clueless statement.....

I don't like the size limitations on the stacking, e.g. having the biggest dude at the bottom. Considering how fantastical (pun not intended) the setting is, this imposition seems jarring.

I prefer freer stacking. If the game designers want to have the player consider the stability of the stack, then the size permutations could have been worked into the calculations of stability.

I can see why some the-people would not like Tama.

But really, I have heard quirkier speech patterns in the English-speaking versions of video games.

For example, there is Abnaxus of the Venar of Dreamfall, who will be and have been mixing up his use of future, past and present tenses because he has have had always been having issues on how he kept track and will be keeping track of his visions.

P.S. Also, really, you would think that game designers would have caught this issue of voice-overs repeating if they are cut off mid-way. I have seen this happen in so many games.

This game is an excellent addition to the series. With challenging battles in the Coliseum with silly and fun characters. The journalist who wrote this review of course has her own personal opinion but I was surprised to see her score? Has she ever played any Final Fantasy games prior? I played all kinds and this is one of their most relevant and fun games in a while. It basically is like Ni No Kini, Kingdom Hearts, Disney, anime, chibits and Final Fantasy mixed in. What a fun game. Graphics are smooth and sleek, The music is awesome and reminiscent of several different Final Fantasy games. A mix of old and new in regards to music, gameplay and story. I have played rpg's such as Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Disgaea, basically every Final Fantasy game, Secret of Evermore and so many more. I give it a 9* out of 10* so far and I'm 25 hours in.

I was informed that the game has a certain gameplay element where players (human or CPU-controlled) attempt to literally stack combatants like a totem pole in order to combine their capabilities, at the cost of crazy awkwardness.

I am really intrigued by this, but I remember that Disgaea had something that looks similar. Can anyone tell me whether any of the Disgaea games did this already?

Just bought the game, and I really liked it so far!!.
I like the turn based combat but it's slow.

So I really agree with this point:
"Battles are slow even when you’re fast-forwarding"

@pharticus: I disagree with you. I've played every main FF games and Turn based games always been my favourite, but I still dislike this game. Everyone has different taste...

(this game is aiming for a newcomers and younger audiences, it didn't bring me anything interesting on the table + I can't stand chibi or the artstyle)

@dadlm: Disliking a game is fine, but a review is supposed to be unbiased, not a single persons experience, so I think this review is really bad.

The graphics are a style some may not like, but they are very good graphics nonetheless. The combat is slow to some, but it is still good combat with a nice system overall. You should review the mechanics, not only if the reviewer had fun.

You can put in you did not have fun yourself, but not give a very solid game a 6/10, no way.

The game also isnt aimed at a young audience, that is something people say because of a certain art style... Pokemon GO is also maybe considered for kids or young people? Guess what? Its playerbase was more college students and up than any other group.

This game also appeals to the same people, even with a chibi art style, its for those that played FF for decades and might enjoy playing a game with many of those famous characters in it.

I don't think many people here understand that this game is aiming for a young audience, not being those who will even play FF XV. If this game was being rated for the ages of 7-12, I believe it would be a 10. On accommodating the audience that will continue to keep this timeless tale alive, Great Job Square Enix.

@mghtybossman: The director said it's for the new and the old fans of the franchise. To me also looks like a game for kids and women who are into cute things. It's worth playing if you're into FF and of course cute characters. =P I wish I knew what you mean by keeping this timeless tale alive ? Cheers

@alien-ouy: When I began to enjoy this series, I first played Final Fantasy VII, this and Final Fantasy III were my first experiences with RPG games. About these FF titles and many others, I quite enjoyed them. WOFF of course is not like it's predecessors, and I have not had much time to play it but I still believe the story will be just as fulfilling for those who enjoy this type of styled gameplay. Now.. It is timeless because it has been around for so long, produced many, many sequels and has great depth in every story. Keep the stories like Final Fantasy for the children, they need it the most.

I always find it laughable when Gamespot, who had (still has?) one of the reviewers with the ugliest voices in human history, trashes a game because of a character voice. Really.

As for the rest.. Gamespot is like Pacther. Whatever they say, take the opposite. I stopped following this site years ago, now. And I never missed it. I come here only when I see yet another bad review from them when I look for a game in Google.

3 with the mc's

if anything id say this game is too similar to pokemon. random batle. weaken the enemy. capture him. level him up. evolve him. use a fire wind or water monster?

gota catch em all! and hey pokemon works .

@leon00x: Exactly right. Gamespot and IGN push certain titles by over hyping them, and try to keep sales low with certain other titles, mostly Japanese ones. When a Japanese game mimics Western gameplay, they praise it to the moon.

You guys watch, when FFXV comes out it'll get 9's and10's on Gamespot and IGN. It's been described as the FF for dudebros. I'm sure they'll love it.

"You may run into some one-time-encounter monster in the field, only to discover that you don't have the skills in your current party necessary to capture them"

That sounds absolutely infuriating. The kinda thing that makes me pass on a game altogether. Shame. I was gonna get this for my vita; I was excited that a big game was actually getting a release for it. Ah well.

Excellent review tho.

@tom_cat_01: The review is 100% incorrect on this.

Nothing is one-time only. It may seem one-time the moment you encounter the monster, but it will 100% appear elsewhere in the game (or you can evolve into that monster). Only Prism fights are one-time only; simply reloading an area will make visible monster fights reappear. Plus there's a Colosseum. You have ample opportunity to recruit any and every monster in the game.

The reviewer is also incorrect about the "expensive item" to change your team out. It cost 3,000 gil. It's expensive at the start of the game, but mid-way through, 3,000 gil is peasant change.
