Wolfenstein: Youngblood Review - Family Matters

  • First Released Jul 26, 2019

  • PC

Young, wild, and free.

In Wolfenstein's alternate 1980s, Nazis remain a tyrannical force of evil and oppression across Europe, even after Hitler was killed by series protagonist BJ Blazkowicz. Thus, the Nazi killing continues as the Blazkowicz twins, Jess and Soph, pick up where their parents left off for a spin-off in Wolfenstein: Youngblood--a relentless co-op shooter driven by an unapologetic, youthful attitude. It may not reach the same narrative heights of its predecessors or land every idea borne out in its new approach, but Youngblood hits where it counts.

Our introduction to Jess and Soph shows how their parents, Anya and BJ, taught them the means for survival on their rural Texas homestead. There's a tense tone of protective parents who've been through the worst and are preparing their daughters to be able to handle the same, which is quickly juxtaposed with the twins' carefree exuberance when alone together. Bring in the wizkid best friend Abby, daughter of Wolfenstein 2's Grace Walker, and you have a trio that brings their own unique swagger to the Wolfenstein name.

Their personalities immediately come to life. Jess and Soph are boisterous and sometimes dorky, the same way many teenagers and young adults are, and it gives them genuine personalities that mostly just come off cool as hell, especially with stellar voice acting. They'll go back and forth about their favorite superspy novel series Arthur & Kenneth, even imagining themselves as their beloved in-fiction duo. They'll refer to things their parents have done, hype each other up in combat, and just straight up act silly in the elevator loading screens to the tune of '80s synthpop background music, breathing new life into the Blazkowicz family.

The game is less about a bold, fleshed-out narrative and more about instilling an infectious charisma in its star characters to match the over-the-top action and sow the seeds for what's next in Wolfenstein.

It's not long before they take a turn for the absurd; with BJ gone missing, they uncover clues to his disappearance and take matters into their own hands. But they're not exactly sneaking out of the house or secretly taking their parents' car out for a drive. They're taking a military-grade helicopter to Nazi-occupied France to find their dad, and well, kill Nazis. As either Jess or Soph (with your co-op or AI partner as the other sister) and equipped with high-tech Da'at Yichud battle suits, you join a French resistance movement in Neu-Paris, which quickly boils down to you raiding Nazi outposts and strongholds.

With Jess and Soph inseparable, co-op is at the heart of the experience, and thankfully partnering up online is a breeze. As a host you can have friends (or randoms) jump into your session seamlessly without interruption; the AI will assume control until a player connects and again right as a player leaves. If players have identical missions in the quest log, completing it will record progress for both players. And if you'd rather go it alone alongside a decent AI companion, it's just as viable an option for the entire game.

Youngblood captures that familiar Wolfenstein feeling of taking an automatic shotgun to a Nazi soldier, melting an armor-clad supersoldier with a laser rifle, or zapping a horde with a lighting coil, and what a powerful feeling it is. But what's new is that tougher enemies have one of two armor elements that are weak to corresponding weapons, encouraging you to actively juggle your varied arsenal. Furthermore, a slightly more diverse weapon upgrade system helps flesh out some familiar firearms to get them to function the way you prefer and tear through enemies more efficiently.

Light RPG elements also make their way into the character progression system; you rack up XP then dump upgrade points into new skills and perks, like raising health/armor caps, increasing cloak times, stocking heavy weapons, and much more. Enemies scale to your level, and only a few sections are defended by near-impossible enemies early on. It's a simple system that helps facilitate steady unlocks, making you feel like you're getting ever more devastating, but never overpowered.

Solid gunplay and some neat mechanics wouldn't mean much without the proper combat encounters to complement them, and Youngblood delivers. You'll often find yourself pulling out all the stops to either finish combat scenarios or realize you have to retreat and rethink your approach. A completely stealthy approach isn't as viable as it was in previous Wolfenstein games, even with the new cloaking ability, but it's a good way to thin out the opposition before going all-out guns blazing. It can get overwhelming when supersoldiers, massive mechs, and a bomb-strapped panzerhund bear down on you, but that's when Youngblood is at its best. Intense firefights can break out anywhere with little warning, and the main missions manage to keep a consistent action-packed momentum throughout.

Youngblood captures that familiar Wolfenstein feeling of taking an automatic shotgun to a Nazi soldier, melting an armor-clad supersoldier with a laser rifle, or zapping a horde with a lighting coil, and what a powerful feeling it is.

Admittedly, co-op centric features are a bit sparse. Each sister has a roster of emotes and motivational quips called pep signals that provide stat buffs or much-needed armor/health. However, that's pretty much what you get in terms of tandem abilities, and the absence of some sort of joint attack or tag-team abilities feels like a missed opportunity. In the fray, partners will be frantically trying to revive each other or falling back on shared lives which work like instant continues, taking the place of a traditional checkpoint system. It can be frustrating to make it to the final fight of a main mission, run out of shared lives, and be sent back to the very beginning of the mission. But if anything, it's a crude way to emphasize cooperation and tactical gameplay.

Overall, Youngblood leans more into an open structure by making Neu-Paris a group of separate districts (open hub areas) where you find your missions. After a brief introduction, you're tasked with assaulting three "Brother" towers--your main quests--attached to each hub area. Out on the streets, though, side missions and random events fill in the spaces and are conducive for racking up early XP, getting familiar with district layouts, and soaking up the vibe of a downtrodden 1980s Paris, but these missions quickly feel like filler that bulk out your to-do list.

The design of the districts are striking, however, and you'll see hints of Arkane Studios' influence; when I'm double jumping and mantling to the rooftops and top floors of buildings, I'm reminded of Dishonored, especially as I search for collectibles and chests full of currency. This approach also spices up combat with some verticality and the opportunity to flex the agile capabilities of those slick Da'at Yichud suits. The Brother towers even have alternative entry points that you'll have to discover yourself or find through side missions. It's a successful incorporation of that studio's strengths, and the game is better for it.

No Caption Provided

The Paris catacombs acts your safe hub in Youngblood, and it's where you accept side missions from resistance members, stock up on supplies, or hit up the old knock-off Wolfenstein 3D cabinet. It's not as extensive as The New Colossus' U-boat home, and you won't get much from its inhabitants--they're nowhere near as involved as Wolfenstein 2's supporting cast since they're just quest givers. However, Jess, Soph, and Abby are there to pick up the slack.

They might be polar opposites of their parents, but it gives Youngblood its own flair. BJ's inner monologue and struggle internalizing life-long trauma is at the heart of modern Wolfenstein games, and Anya has seen the pure evil of the Nazi regime first hand through the years. Naturally, Jess and Soph have vastly different characterizations, only knowing a post-war world and presumably growing up in a stable household. They capture the spirit of a carefree youth, yet they share the same unfettered motivation for killing Nazis; it would seem that Anya and BJ taught them well.

The story doesn't reach the same highs as mainline Wolfenstein games, namely The New Colossus. It’s an incredibly tough act to follow, really. But aside from a cheap plot twist and underwhelming villains, most of Youngblood's lean story is quality stuff. To that end, the game is less about a bold, fleshed-out narrative and more about instilling an infectious charisma in its star characters to match the over-the-top action and sow the seeds for what's next in Wolfenstein. Despite Youngblood taking place after events we've yet to see unfold in the mainline games, it leaves the door open for some exciting, wild possibilities for where the series could go.

Jess and Soph are boisterous and sometimes dorky, the same way many teenagers and young adults are, and it gives them genuine personalities that mostly just come off cool as hell...

Throughout Youngblood, traces of an ongoing game structure become more pronounced once you finish the main story. You can take on daily and weekly challenges as they cycle into the game, which offer some additional XP and currency to unlock any remaining abilities and weapon mods. What's a bit more substantial is the option to replay story missions on harder difficulties (hard, very hard, and challenging) for increasing amounts of XP and currency. While it's a bog-standard way to keep the co-op experience going, they at least offer an outlet to try new tactics, as these harder modes can become quite unforgiving. The endgame may not be extensive, but the ride was exciting enough that the content feels like a little value added.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood has the series' signature first-person shooting thrills that'll have you gladly busting shots and blasting lasers in the face of Nazi trash--and the opportunity to do so alongside a friend. It incorporates some new ideas which are serviceable for the most part, but hits more of the right notes in RPG elements and level design. It also knows the resistance doesn't end when one person cuts the head off a monstrous regime; the fight continues, sometimes into the next generation. And the way this brief spin-off broadens the saga with the Blazkowicz twins makes you wish there was more to see from this new cast of lovable knuckleheads. Jess and Soph--and Abby too--learned from the best, and embrace their newfound duty of ridding their world of tyranny while being cool as hell doing it. Youngblood is short, but oh-so sweet.

  • Light RPG elements spice up the solid gunplay
  • Bright, charming, and unapologetic attitude from Jess, Soph, and Abby

  • Lack of variety in side missions and additional activities
  • Limited use of co-op for gameplay features

About the Author

Michael loves them story-driven shooters, especially the modern Wolfenstein games. He spent around 12 hours (roughly split between co-op with a friend and solo with AI) coursing through Youngblood’s missions and endgame content on PC. Review code was provided by Bethesda.

This game is being destroyed by critics everywhere but you can always count on GameSpot to hoar themselves out for the quick buck to be one of the ones to give this such a high score.

Really wanted Wolfenstein to get back on form after "The New Collosus" poor show but I think they're losing this franchise now and should wait a few years and reboot it but with Bethesda on board, no game is safe these days.

@Bazz3442: The funny part is you say they're "hoaring" themselves out for money, yet here you are on the page coming back to comment, giving them clicks and falling for their bait. What a weak human. Aware of bait, falls for it anyway. Even mice run when they know the cheese is a trap.

@KahnArtizt: Well check out the big balls on you.

Something tells me you're a little triggered. Don't like anybody with a negative opinion on GameSpot from their little bitch boy. Try to get a little bit of intelligence in your posts rather than going straight for the comical insults.

Either way, I've been a member of this site almost since the beginning so I've seen it at its best and am now seeing it at it worst and now it a shame that any little "millennial" crybaby seems to join this site now.

The vast majority of the time I don't care what they do and find some of their coverage on different mediums mildly amusing but when you see obvious bought and payed for reviews which this site has been accused many a time in the past (not by me), I've just got to comment.

Chill out little guy.

@Bazz3442: I'm just calling irony as I see it. I'm guessing you'll come back to this page and give em another click too. I created this account literally a month after you so I know what it was like back then. It was definitely more civil and fair in the forums. And after playing majority of this game so far, it's not bad. Like a solid 7, tops, but nowhere near as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Guaranteed all the people crying haven't played it. Keep giving Gamespot their clicks!

@KahnArtizt: Well I give GameSpot so little "clicks" these days (never upvote) that I'm sure they really appreciate the attention I've been giving this terrible game these past few days. You seem to appreciate too as you do mention "clicks" a lot. They're very important to you, aren't they?

You don't have to play an FPS to know how shit something is from watching gameplay (What you see is what you get). It's my favorite genre (along with horror games) and the first happened to be great Wolfenstein back in the 90's so I know a bad FPS when I see it. And one word I hear more than any other in the multiple reviews (that are not bought) of this game is "repetitive" and that's always instant turn off.

Have you even read or seen any other reviews apart from this one. I don't think so. You should as you may learn to critique games better as you don't seem to know what's bad. Maybe buy the classics of the genre as there's many to choose from and I know you haven't played many or if any because you give "Young Blood" a "solid 7" and you wouldn't do that if you played them.

Shame that it's probably what they're going to do to Doom which is here early next year and while it looks good, I expect Bethesda to do the same to this franchise as well.

@Bazz3442: I've been playing shooters since Wolf 3D, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, but why would I compare youngblood to them? They don't hold up. The only 90s shooter that aged well in my opinion is Half Life. I compare Youngblood to its 2 direct predecessors, New order and New Colossus, which are both solid 9's to me and 2 of the best shooters of this generation, next to Titanfall 2. It was decent but very different and I guess I can understand some people are resistant to change. My only complaint was the story wasn't very interesting but I enjoyed it for what it was: a $30 side venture. It wasn't Wolf 3 and clearly wasn't trying to be. And besides, shooters with RPG mechanics ALWAYS get repetitive. Never played one that didn't but Youngblood wasn't as long as most RPG shooters so it didn't wear on me as much as Borderlands or Destiny did.

@Bazz3442: Couple things. Youngblood has a 76 metascore, so it's obviously not being "destroyed by critics everywhere" since that's a positive score.

Second, it's 'whore.' Hoar means something something completely different, and it isn't, "I pretend reviews I don't agree with are paid for."

@Mogan: Actually, 74 on PC, 62 on XBox One, 64 on PS4. User reviews are below 3 on all platforms. Steam is below mixed. Youtubers and video reviews from the streaming market are now publishing their reviews and roasting it to bits. Gamefly, Amazon, most game outlet reviews are 1-2 stars out of 5 at best. You may like it and that's great - glad you do - but it is being fairly universally panned by the people that actually matter, and those are the customers spending the cash. Given the scope of the rinse and repeat content and half hearted attempt at trying to make a game here, my guess is they will fall just short of breaking even. And this is at a $29.99 price point and the rage is this real. Can't imagine what would have happened at $59. Bethesda is actually lower than EA at this point - and that's something to be worried about because I used to like their games. And now, I am seriously concerned for the development process of TES6 and Starfield. (If Starfield ever gets released at all at this point) yes I know Arkane developed this along with the reskin by Machine Games with whatever Arkane had in the prototype hopper at the moment with Bethesda slapping an IP on this to fool the masses wallets, but this and other really unethical crap they are pulling lately is why I am on the fence of no longer supporting them financially.

@Utnayan: Review bombing is a serious problem. It's really not a bad game. Infinitely better in every respect than F76. I'm enjoying it. Solid 7/10 for me. 8/10 when we've had a few drinks.

@KahnArtizt: Infinitely better than Fallout 76 in that it compiles? :P Sorry tongue in cheek there. Glad you enjoy it for what it is. Most do not. That's not review bombing - it's just a bad game for most people. Either way, time will tell when the sales numbers are released. (If they are)

@Mogan: Thanks for that spelling correction. Can't believe I made that mistake. I won't change it so people can see what a hero you are for highlighting it.

As for Metacritic; have you seen the user score because that's all I care about. You took the time to check it the first time so you can check it again for that score.

And it's being destroyed by the critics that I respect and it's the ones I don't that are giving it such high praise and I certainly take GameSpot reviews of AAA games with a pinch of salt.

Words like "repetitive" are an instant turn off for me and I've seen the evidence from play throughs but if you like that kind of thing, fair enough but it's certainly one thing I definitely don't want from an FPS.

@Bazz3442: "have you seen the user score"

I find it adorable you put faith in a metric determined by people who may not actually have played the game. I haven't bought the game, nor do I plan to in the near future, yet I just gave it an 8.

Should you put faith in the score I gave? Of course not! Likewise, you might want to rethink believing in other scores.

@zmanbarzel: Wow. You seem easy to please. "Adorable"?

Anyway; the same argument could be made for payed critics or critics who are just plain shit.

It's the same with a site like IMDB. Movie scores are entirely based on user opinions and are generally bang on.

The point being that genuine scores tend to outweigh dumbasses who randomly vote an 8 on something that they never played. Man those people are annoying.

@Bazz3442: "the same argument could be made for payed critics"

Not really. Professional critics have their name attached to their reviews. They have accountability. If they review a product without actually playing it, there are real-world implications, as shown by what's-his-name from IGN getting fired and blackballed from this industry.

@zmanbarzel: Who said anything about not playing it?

I'm talking about critics who are payed off to do good reviews. A critic could be fired for doing a negative review if it goes against company policy of taking backhanders for favorable reviews and there's next to no backlash if everything is exposed for the poor game it is and that they're just left with bad cred which GameSpot have in spades.

And that IGN guy got fired for plagiarism so it doesn't help your argument.

@Bazz3442: So crazy how so many instances of professional sports being rigged for money but never any cases of reviewers being paid for good reviews. Like not even once. They're better than the illuminati! Honestly, I'm the type of person who blows the whistle on shit like that and I know I'm not alone. Weird how no one has ever caught these pesky video game companies! Must be an even grander conspiracy than 9/11!!

@KahnArtizt: Uh, do not know how long you have been a gamer but there have been countless times publishing companies have been busted with pressing for favorable review scores. Whether that is paid for trips with expenses paid, promises of future exclusive content for upcoming games, or advertisement dollars being withheld. I suggest you do some reading on the Kane/Lynch debacle on this very site, Rockstar's influence on game reviews which was busted, and how Bethesda actually influenced gaming outlets to rate Fallout New Vegas just shy of 8.5 so Obsidian employees would miss their bonus (Of which aggregate review scores were a part of) This isn't a conspiracy. It happens in every industry. This shouldn't be shocking to you at this point. Here is a link to the firing of a reviewer who gave a game too low a score from publisher pressure. How Gamespot fired unsavory staff, and how Sony tried to influence (Successfully) with pulling ad dollars if their games were not given favorable reviews. https://kotaku.com/yes-a-games-writer-was-fired-over-review-scores-5893785

@KahnArtizt: If you don't believe it happens then ask yourself the question; Why not?

Taking this game as an example as being distributed by a publisher that has come off a disastrous release that has all but destroyed any good will they had with "Fallout 76", so needed a win and targeting popular gaming sights with gullible users who don't do their research on whether a game is good or not and the idea of paying the right people for some positive press is beyond your comprehension.

This kind of thinking doesn't even enter the realms of "conspiracy theory" when it's such a simple thing to do and you don't need to be like a "detective" with insider knowledge of the industry like yourself to reject this idea outright. But if you can't find any evidence it doesn't happen, right?

You don't have to listen or read any reviews on this mess to see it a mindlessly repetitive with extremely campy and annoying characters and basically an insult to the Wolfenstein fan base so this stinks of a rushed product with Bethesda looking to make a quick buck which is basically their business model now. So even if this game was good, an 8 raises suspicion.

On the subject of the store, before the game allowed only the purchases of skins, but in the steam store the text for gold bars says this:

"Contains Gold Bars, an in-game currency used to acquire new power armor and weapon skins, gear, pep signals, and consumables to help you and your friends battle through Nazi occupied Paris."

Basically they disabled anything other than Skins, and of course the reviewers were too lazy, dumb to actually check the details around the MTs in the game.

@aiat_gamer: I can't find anything other than skins that cost gold. And you can buy those skins with in-game silver as well. Maybe they'll add these insidious microtransactions later? Right now though, you can't buy any kind of game altering boosts. I'm not sure why the Steam description says you can; even developers posting on Steam forums say it's just skins.

@Mogan: Yes I know, they are pulling the crap that other major publishers pull, turning on the actual store after making sure the reviews are out. The review websites of course have long lost any shreds of integrity they had so publishers are sure that no one will update the review covering the changes.

How is it a conspiracy?

Other major publishers have done exactly the same thing...

Wait for reviews, then release the full array of MTs.

Just stop Mogan. Doth protest too much.

Great that you’re enjoying it though ?

@aiat_gamer: No idea, but it's not accurate. Why would devs on the Steam forums say you can only buy skins if that weren't true? It's not like they could hide the fact they were lying when people can just go check in the game.

Anyway, even if they do add a gold price to the boosts, the game's already balanced around not being able to buy them, so it's really not going to change anything unless they also drop XP rates or something.

I just love how Bethesda is riding this wave of political climate in USA to make people hate buy their mediocre product, meanwhile they have a Trump on their board. Lefties flocking to buy the game thinking they are sticking it to the man. Capitalism at its best.

Usually people complain that 8 is too low of a score, lol. This is my first day 1 purchase since Doom 2016. I'm enjoying it but I'll still be realistic and say it's not as good as the others. I'd say a solid 7 to 8 so far.

@Nightmare350: What a childish reason to not play a game.

@Nightmare350:

It’s more that I want to play a relatable human being and not an insufferable, badly written child.

@Nightmare350: Since you indicated that you "don't want to play a f*cking girl", I figured you hadn't played them.

You're missing out on some good games if you won't play as a female protagonist.

It’s a terrible game. I created an account just to make this review. Microtransactions galore and the gameplay is terrible. The sound cut out constantly. I couldn’t care less that the main characters are women, but c’mon make a decent game. Unbelievably grindy and lacks all of the imagination and heart of the previous games. They’re clearly trying to push an agenda here which is their right to do so but make a game that is actually good. Bethesda slaps me in the face yet again. I’m just sad at this point

@wiegraf2195: um...no. Do you actually read the player reviews, or just look at the score and take it at face value? This game is fun as hell. They've been review-bombed by the same betas that get butthurt whenever a game has a female lead. The 0 reviews are all spewing nonsense about developers being "SJWs" just because the person holding the gun isnt a dude. Its pitiful. I, for one, would rather have a 29.99 game with microtransactions I can avoid than have a 59.99 game with none. People are such simps sometimes...

@darkallah: Literally 0 people care about the sex of the protagonists in a game, bro. You actually buy that bullshit that journalists feed you?

@darkallah: Lol, you know there are sites other than metacritic to get user reviews, right? It's getting a negative reaction on steam and you can't use your little "they just hate women" strawman with them.

@CRAPCOM1926: Simple, it's barely a Wolfenstein game. I recommend New Order or New Colossus

"Bright, charming, and unapologetic attitude from Jess, Soph, and Abby"

You put them in black and yellow uniforms and they would be right at home in Haze.

CO-OP centric, microtransactions, boring RPG mechanics, etc.... Doesn't look awful but I think I'll wait on this one. I skipped the previous entry to the series and will gladly do the same here. DOOM is stealing Wolfensteins thunder this year.

I'm not convinced with this review. I mean, if IGN and Gameranx thought this was just an "ok" game, it's pretty much guaranteed that this game is mediocre at best.

Gamespot needs to start cleaning house or should just stop doing reviews altogether.

@cboye18: Just stop with this crap. People get pissy no matter what scores GS gives.

How about playing the game yourself before criticising this review, otherwise your "opinion" gets dismissed immediately.

Or, go elsewhere if their review for a game you haven't even played stresses you out that much.

@cboye18: instead of Gamespot firing a bunch of people because you don’t agree with their review of a game you’ve never played, you could just stop reading their reviews.

Last I looked, the Metacritic average was 77, so Gamespot is only 0.3 off the norm here.

@Mogan: Yeah, I don't get the OP's line of thought. "Their reviews are so bad, I think people should lose their jobs over them, but I'll continue to read them."
