The Witcher 3 Nintendo Switch Review - The Last Wish

  • First Released May 18, 2015
    released
  • NS

Despite taking a technical and visual hit, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still one of the best games in recent years on Nintendo Switch.

The dichotomy of beauty and violence has always been a driving theme in The Witcher series. The Northern Realms' gorgeous vistas are dotted with war-torn battlefields, kindness--no matter how fleeting it may be--is often juxtaposed with savagery, and even the warmest characters have a cold and calculated side to them. That neverending tug-of-war is ever-present in The Witcher 3, even when its stripped-down visuals may obscure some of that beauty.

Everything is here in the Nintendo Switch version--The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, its two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and all of its DLC. The main game alone offers dozens of superb quests filled with interesting characters, fantastic twists, and rewarding combat encounters. As Kevin VanOrd said in GameSpot's original review, "Excellence abounds at every turn in this open-world role-playing game." The same is mostly true for the Nintendo Switch version.

Now Playing: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition For Switch Video Review

As you'd expect, the visuals have been pared down significantly. The textures are muddied, the draw-distances are reined in, and the resolution has taken a hit. These issues are exacerbated during docked play. While it technically runs at a higher frame rate and resolution docked, these visual issues are all the more noticeable when projected onto a larger screen.

The standard Nintendo Switch's 6.2-inch screen does a great job of hiding the blemishes. Even though it's running at a lower resolution, the smaller screen gives it a much crisper look, so the poor textures and pop-in are less apparent. If you do plan on playing it in handheld mode, you can, thankfully, adjust the size of the HUD to make things easier to read.

C'mon, this is what you're really here for
C'mon, this is what you're really here for

For returning players, the visual downgrade may require some getting used to. However, focusing solely on The Witcher 3's visuals does this port a disservice. Four years later, the game is still massive in scope, and seeing the battle-scarred swamps of Velen, jagged peaks of Skellige, and sprawling countryside of Toussaint on a technically inferior platform is still a sight to behold.

More importantly, the grittier look of the Switch port doesn't affect The Witcher 3's core gameplay. The combat and exploration may be smoother on a PC, Xbox One X, or PS4 Pro, but I found performance to be consistent throughout a wide variety of combat encounters and locales. After nearly 30 hours, I haven't experienced any significant frame rate dips. Even the swamps in Velen--an area notorious for causing frame rate issues on PS4 and Xbox One--are comparable to the rest of the experience on Switch. According to developer CD Projekt Red, the frame rate should range between 24 and 30 frames per second. In populated areas like Novigrad, the frame rate dipped to the lower end of that range. Given the slower pace of The Witcher 3, I never found these dips to be an issue, even in the heat of combat.

The Witcher 3's visual prowess may have been a selling point for some in 2015, but the Nintendo Switch version is a reminder that there is far more to this adventure than a pretty picture. Even today, there are few games that can rival the storytelling and worldbuilding on display here. Nothing is as simple as it seems, and every thread you pull on reveals enticing new details about this world and its characters.

The Nintendo Switch version is a reminder that there is far more to this adventure than a pretty picture

The vast web of decisions and consequences is just as impressive as it was in 2015. While it may not be apparent on your first playthrough, your actions--both big and small--can have serious repercussions, even if you were trying to do the right thing. What's more impressive is how well fleshed-out each of these paths are and how they ebb and flow through main quests and side quests. While many outcomes are bittersweet by design, none feel underdeveloped.

Where The Witcher 3 continues to shine is in its many deeply human stories. While the political aspects of the main story give context to the world and the characters that inhabit it, it's the interactions Geralt has with its denizens that gives weight to the experience. There are no good guys or bad guys. There are just people fighting to find hope in an oppressive world. Many of the quests provoke questions like: Would you hurt others for those you love? Can even the most vile of men be forgiven? How far can fear drive someone?

The superb storytelling continues in the game's two expansions. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. While not necessary to the main narrative, these two expansions are thoughtful addendums to Geralt's story. Blood and Wine in particular is a heartfelt send-off for the storied series. If you're jumping back into the game and just want to experience these, you can skip to them right when you load it up for the first time.

Although the Nintendo Switch might not be the best platform to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it's still a fantastic experience that shouldn't be missed. If you are looking to replay The Witcher 3 and bask in its detail and beauty, the Switch port may not quite scratch that itch. However, what makes this game excellent isn't its graphics, but the powerful stories it tells, and those are as vivid as ever on Switch.

The Good

  • It's the same excellent game it's always been, plus its two expansions and all the DLC
  • Fantastic branching narrative, ripe with with personal moments that give weight to the experience
  • Nearly every quest and interaction feels meaningful
  • Handheld mode offers a novel way to experience the game, and you can adjust the HUD size to boot

The Bad

  • Visual downgrade can be off-putting, especially while docked

Ok that's it, I tried playing this twice already on ps4 and I just couldn't get on with it. I find Geralt a really irritating character, the fault must clearly be mine though as I'm yet to find a source that has anything negative say about it? Maybe I'll try a third time???

@cherub1000: I don't think you're at "fault". If it's not for you, then it's not for you. Nothing wrong with not liking something that others do.

Forcing it wouldn't magically make you enjoy it.

Still hoping for some cross-play support with PC. That would be a huge selling point for someone who already has it on 2 platforms and is itching to dip back in.

People don't get it, gameplay is more important than graphics.

@Bread_or_Decide: With more powerful hardware - one can have both gameplay, and amazing graphics. You get both of those playing the PC version. You get horrid graphics, but portable gameplay with the Switch version.

To be honest - many third-party games are simply forced onto the Switch to drive sales and competition. The problem is that playing third-party games on a console is a hassle - this one has to be torturous to play.

@Bread_or_Decide:

I still prefer the 5th gen polygonal graphics of PS1 - Dreamcast era most ( yes DC Is partially 5th gen to me )

Like JRPGs with lots of CGI , detailed pre-rendered backgrounds , real-time slightly blocky prototype looking 3D worlds and characters ( think 1993 Virtua Fighter 1 Arcade machine , PS1 FF7 ). Too many games nowdays look like they're trying to be a straight up reality simulator but I had more fun with the uncanny valley concoctions we used to get.

I also still love 8-bit NES graphics nearly as much. I feel sometimes less truly Is more , when thinking of my favorite games that hold up and why , like with music making , limitations free creativity. These eras aged better to me.

Same goes for sound quality love 8-bit - PS1 era , hate most modern game orchestral soundtracks like 6th gen - present stuff. Despite today's technical advantage they don't hold a candle to 3rd , 4th , and 5th gen in those areas In terms of memorability , ambition , composition/ creativity imo.

Graphics are as Important as any other feature , how you compliment each together makes the difference. Each help enhance the overall game's Immersion and Impact.

I am excited for 9th gen / PS5 because I think we will finally have balanced specs again.

( FF7R on PS5 can't wait ).

@boom4real: You make a great point with sound design, and I mostly agree. With some exceptions, it seems like most modern games have serviceable and nice-sounding soundtracks, but not very many actual themes. Flash back to the older age of gaming when I can hear a few notes and immediately know why I need to be caring about particular characters or events. Frog's theme, Terra's Theme, Cosmo Canyon, Forest Theme in Super Mario RPG. I'm immediately transported just hearing them.

@boom4real: Contemporary game worlds are often overflown with mechanically pointless, noisome baroquerie. I too prefer fifth gen presentation above what came later on account of its interpretive freedom and timeless simplicity. Not a fan of JRPGs though.

@Bread_or_Decide: I get what you're saying, graphics aren't everything, but when you buy a Switch, you are already accepting the loss in horsepower as part of the deal. I agree gameplay is key, but I don't want next gen to look like PS2 either.

Absolutely true. People always act like you can't have both. It's true, smaller studios or modest projects have to prioritize, but others can have both an outstanding game and impressive graphics, like...the Witcher 3...on any other system.

Some games are not meant for Switch., This is one of them. It is meant to be played in 4k HDR with beautiful surrounds and exploration. It's like going to watch a new Avengers movie n a 7" Black and white with a mono headphone sticking out of your ear.

Pretty sad that you feel the need to try that hard to diminish someone else's enjoyment.

You know, despite the Switch's success, I'd be really intrigued to know what Nintendo could pull off if they went for a really competitive console this next round. Hell, what if they made something more powerful than the PS5 or Scarlett? They used to be the standard, not the ones lagging behind.

Because power really worked for the 3DO and Dreamcast and XBOX ONE X.

@Bread_or_Decide: By all measures, the Xbox One X did increase One console sales. The initial launch was better than MS anticipated as well. Seems to have been a point everyone honed in on with PS4 vs Xbox One as well, 720p memes anyone? Dreamcast isn't really relevant to that argument because the PS2 came out two years later and crushed it, because of graphics and the whole DVD player thing. Before the PS2 launched, it seemed Dreamcast was going to make some waves.

Anyways, there has always been a market for those willing to sacrifice graphics for mobility. The Switch has an advantage of being a fairly capable handheld gaming device comparatively speaking. Just like PC gaming offers players the ability to maximize their horsepower.

@Bread_or_Decide: Power works fine on the Xbox one X and the Dreamcast was awesome. 3DO was something ahead of it's time and poorly implemented. It had amazing graphics for what it was at that time.

You have a point though just because something is the best doesn't mean people have enough brain cells to realise it.

@Bread_or_Decide: Each of those is something of an exceptional circumstance. The early console days were a different market, as consoles were still very much niche. This was long before people routinely dropped $3k on gaming PCs, and most households wouldn't ever consider the price of a 3DO in the early '90s, which was something like $700. Hell, that'd be an insane price even by today's standards.

The Dreamcast (which I owned) was a lovely system, and perhaps my favorite system ever. However, it launched at a rather unfortunate time. It launched early, and many people were still hanging on to their previous consoles in anticipation of the PS2 (the best-selling console of all time) and the newly-announced and mysterious Microsoft Xbox. Although it carried an absolutely fantastic roster of games for those with nontraditional taste, the poor Dreamcast just couldn't compete with the two behemoths.

Xbox One X was just a stupid idea, frankly, and I said so from the second it was announced. Even PS4 Pro was a little late to the party, but One X only appealed to a miniscule fraction of gamers, because it came waaaay late in this generation of consoles at a substantial cost (for most console gamers). I suspect the overwhelming majority of people would rather just wait to drop the money on the next generation, particularly because many gamers have a decent PC and don't really need a One X.

All that being said, I didn't say making a powerhouse console was necessary or in Nintendo's best interest. I said I'd be really curious to see what they could do if they did have a beast of a console. Just thinking out loud, as it were.

Everyone seriously need to watch this video. A secret menu was found on the switch version. You need to mod your switch to access it. Simply turning off TAA makes a huge difference. Also turning on sharpening makes this game tons less blurry. They need to allow us to do this.

@chansaet: You need the blur filter and TAA to hide the dynamic resolution changes. They are very noticeable at such a low res. This might look better in portable (kinda doubt it) but on a big screen it will look... bad and extremely intrusive when it changes resolutions.

@basketballfan: IDK if thats true but the video it looks so much better. The game is so blurry on my TV. 720p is not that blurry. It looks 480p or worse with that blur filter and TAA. I rather it be clearer. All I want is to have the option thats already built into the game. Let us turn off TAA, turn on sharpening for those who want it. I played Doom on the switch and doom isn't close to this blurry. Doom resolutions are similar too. Every review has stated how the blurriness ruins the docked experience entirely.

@chansaet: You can tweak the games visuals with any modern monitor/display. Sharpness, color, contrast, gamma, Feesync (on the newer Samsung displays). But to be honest, i think Nintendo Switch games look and play much better on older LED/HDTV display from 5-8 years ago.

@soulfulDAGGER: Not like this you can't. Turning off Anti-Alising was the thing that did the biggest difference. If we can turn that off like what he did in the video the game will look so much more clear. CDPR needs to allow us to do this. Game is so blurry especially in docked mode. Just giving us some of the options in the menu such as turn of TAA, bloom effects, and allowing sharpening wouldn't be that hard for them to do. It's already in the game. You just can't access it without a modded switch. And people who don't want to change these settings don't have to do it.

the guy said he didn't do any overclocking. He was turning off settings mostly too. Turning off anti-alising makes the game run smoother. Only Sharpening filter would affect performance negatively and i doubt it would affect it that much. Turning off AA would totally offset turning on sharpening.

For newcomers wanting mobile of this game, or who only own a switch, a welcomed addition.

For those who own any other platform other than switch and dont mind playing at home who haven't played it, buy it cheaper and play it in better frame rates and high fidelity on those other platforms.

For those who already have played this on the bigger hardware, pointless and expected highly reduced frame rates and visuals.

Great to see however, dont really understand why the switch keeps getting age old conversions though?
