The Last Of Us Part 2 Spoiler Review - Dog Eat Dog

  • First Released Jun 19, 2020
    released
  • PS4

Here are our more detailed thoughts about The Last of Us Part II.

Editor's note: You may have seen our spoiler-free The Last of Us Part II review, originally published on June 12, 2020. Due to a strict embargo, we were limited in what aspects of the game we could touch on in that review. Now that the embargo has lifted and the game is now available, I've expanded on my thoughts here; this review has the same arguments and score as the first one and is simply more detailed in my analysis. Note that this review contains spoilers, including one major character death. We also have a full spoiler chat covering every story beat in the game if you're looking for even more in-depth analysis of the story.

The Last of Us Part II begins with serious tonal whiplash. One moment, Ellie and her close friend Dina are becoming more than friends in a basement filled with weed plants and Naughty Dog porn puns; the next, Joel is being savagely beaten to death with a golf club. It's the first of many, many gruesome deaths. Some happen whether you want them to or not, in intimate cutscenes that are hard to watch, while others happen just because an NPC got in between you and your objective and killing them was the easiest thing to do. Either way, that brief glimpse of happiness at the beginning is left very much in the dust.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part II Spoiler Review Video

But while the scale and severity of death and loss in this game is incredibly high, The Last of Us Part II is more a character study than a musing on the nature of violence. On that front, the story of Ellie, her playable foil Abby, and their quests for revenge and redemption is a gripping and harrowing one, and I found myself deeply emotionally entangled with each woman and her strengths and flaws. The bloodshed is very much a part of that story, but it's far from the most effective one, and it's where the game stumbles a bit.

Throughout the game, I often wanted to stop Ellie from making the choices she was making. Joel's death sends her on a relentless quest for revenge, and I had a hard time buying into it. Ellie's life in the settlement of Jackson is a good one--she has a new girlfriend, and it's about as nice a place to live as you could expect from a post-apocalyptic community. It was hard for me at first to understand why she'd want to risk all that for a dangerous revenge quest when she could process her grief among friends and loved ones in relative safety.

But Ellie decides to get revenge, so you go. As Ellie, you play three days in Seattle as you hunt down any and all the people present when Abby killed Joel. They're all members of the Washington Liberation Front, or WLF for short, and much of your time is spent killing random "Wolves" from one combat scenario to the next. You collect resources and weapons, upgrade those weapons, unlock new skill paths, and generally get very used to killing people (and infected) as the scrappy, agile Ellie.

Like I said in my spoiler-free review, the combat is intense and exhilarating. Ellie's movements are smooth enough that they almost look scripted; you can duck and dodge in a fight and deliver a return blow with a series of button presses that translate into a strangely graceful dance. You can accidentally alert an enemy to your presence only to slip through a tight space in the wall, vault through a window, and outrun your pursuer through a building to reestablish your cover and gain the upper hand. You can also easily get surrounded and die horribly, whether you're fighting people or infected.

Ellie with her bow and arrow, a favorite weapon for stealth.
Ellie with her bow and arrow, a favorite weapon for stealth.

Navigating any given combat scenario is a puzzle in which you have to figure out exactly how to get from point A to point B with the resources you have. I'm partial to stealth when possible, and it's especially rewarding to decide how you're going to silently kill each enemy with only a flimsy silencer, two arrows, and your default knife. Should you kill the blind clickers first because they're strong and deadly, or should you kill the infected runners first because they can see you? Can you retrieve an arrow from a corpse to be reused on their friend? Most importantly, where's the exit?

And, of course, it is brutal. Enemies use each other's names and cry out when you kill their friends. Killing someone's dog is a priority, as they can track your scent and maul you to death, and you have to hear them mourn the dog in real-time. But frankly, the fact that your enemies have names doesn't make them any less in your way. You have to do what you have to do to get to the next location, and you want to do that to see where the story goes next. They might as well be anonymous at that point.

The fact that your enemies have names doesn't make them any less in your way.

Overall, Ellie leaves an unbelievable amount of destruction in her wake in just three days. Day 3 itself ends in chaos, but before it can be resolved, the game cuts. The next thing you know, it's Seattle Day 1 again, and you're controlling Abby. This is where The Last of Us II contextualizes Ellie's rampage, and it's the entire reason the story works at all.

It can certainly be jarring to suddenly switch characters. In many ways, you have to start from scratch; you have a whole new set of weapons and skills to unlock, and Abby feels different in a fight. But you also know much of what happens to Abby's friends, and on Day 1, you see a lot of ghosts. There's a pang of sadness and overwhelming inevitability in every interaction you have with them; you wish you could change the outcome, but you can't.

Abby in combat.
Abby in combat.

Like Ellie, Abby was driven by revenge--and she got it. Through flashbacks, you learn exactly what happened and where she's come from, and it doesn't take long to side with her over Ellie despite any lingering feelings you might have for Joel. Done with a years-long search for vengeance, hers is a story of redemption. Unlike with Ellie, it's easy to get invested in Abby's goals, which include saving her friend and then saving some kids. Her motivations are complicated, sure, but it's not at all a struggle to get on board with what you're doing.

Abby is clearly a foil to Ellie, just further along in her journey. Through Abby, you get to see what redemption for Ellie might look like, even after all that she's done. It's a testament to Abby's characterization that I ended up more attached to her than I was to Ellie, and when the game ripped me back to Ellie's perspective for the final stretch, I was more concerned about Abby's safety than Ellie's pain.

It's a testament to Abby's characterization that I ended up more attached to her than I was to Ellie.

Like Ellie, though, Abby still kills a lot of people. Abby's main enemy is a religious group called the Seraphites, and they, too, are composed of mostly anonymous soldier types. They do get some humanization through Abby's companion, an exiled Seraphite boy named Lev, but it's about the same as that of the Wolves: just enough for the story, and not enough to make you change how you fight. In Abby's case, the onslaught of combat against human enemies feels more at odds with her character development, especially by Day 3, and a lot of that violence goes unexamined. Neither Abby nor Ellie faces real consequences for most of those deaths.

For both characters, this disconnect between the gameplay and the grander narrative is compounded by looting and collectible-hunting. Looting during a fight is exciting, especially when you find the one extra bullet you need or a bit of health that can keep you going. But more often than not, I'd loot and look for collectibles only after I'd killed every enemy in the vicinity. It's far easier and safer, for one, and I didn't want to miss any of the interesting sub-plots found in scattered notes and photographs just because I wanted to kill fewer people.

Both Ellie and Abby tend to leave destruction in their wake.
Both Ellie and Abby tend to leave destruction in their wake.

Most of the time, there aren't any collectibles to find in combat-heavy areas. But there are occasionally notes and things to find when enemies are around, and as a result, I ended up scouring every corner of every area in the hopes of finding something cool. Because most combat arenas give you multiple avenues of attack and escape, though, I ended up backtracking through most of them to try to find things, and that can severely disrupt the pacing. The nooks and crannies that work well in combat just become one more place to look for a note or trading card, and the fact that you're looking for trading cards at all often feels too game-y for the otherwise sobering tone.

I ended up enabling an accessibility option called high-contrast mode to help with my collectible hunt, not because it was difficult, but because I was getting annoyed. When toggled on, it mutes the background, removes textures, and highlights interactable objects and enemies. I used it after clearing an area of enemies to speed up the looting part, and while it wasn't the most elegant solution, it did help the pacing. It's one of a litany of accessibility options, too, which allow you to fine-tune the gameplay, sound, and visuals to your needs. It's a commendable suite that's incredibly inclusive, though I enabled an option just to circumvent a gameplay annoyance rather than to fit a need.

Abby is a fantastic character in her own right, and the way the game pits her against Ellie is what makes the story powerful.

Despite those annoyances, finding collectibles and piecing together the stories held within them is rewarding and paints a picture of the outbreak as it developed through the years. A bank robbery gone wrong sticks out as a favorite, and there are quite a few other stories worth finding. A lot of the time, seeking out these collectibles will force you to get creative--things like breaking windows to bypass a locked door or swinging on a cable to get to an area that's just out of reach. There's nothing so difficult that you feel like a genius for figuring it out, but it does make you feel appropriately resourceful.

It's a bleak, pessimistic world, and exploration issues aside, I didn't exactly want to leave it. The ending is devastating, and I almost wanted more time in-game to reflect on it. I instead put the game down for a full week after I was done so I could fully process what had happened.

In the original Last of Us, I wanted to make Joel's bad decisions right along with him; I knew it was "wrong," in a sense, but I wanted to save Ellie anyway. In Part II, I wanted nothing to do with Ellie's bad decisions. There's no "oh god, I'm the monster" moment; just profound sadness about all the pain she's caused. Without Abby, none of that works. Abby is a fantastic character in her own right, and the way the game pits her against Ellie is what makes the story powerful. It's a tragic, heartbreaking exploration of the consequences of the first game, even if not all your actions here have real consequences.

The Good

  • Ellie and Abby are both complicated and flawed, well deserving of such an intense character study
  • The overall story is bleak and depressing, but ultimately more impactful for it
  • Combat is tense, and successfully navigating an encounter with limited resources is immensely satisfying

The Bad

  • Much of the violence you inflict goes unexamined, which makes the gruesomeness of it just unpleasant
  • Looting and collectible hunting can disrupt the pacing, and the presence of collectibles doesn't always fit the situation well

the game is an incredible improvement over the original in every aspect except the story, its nothing compare to the first game, and when some people describe it as revenge porn they weren't entirely wrong!

the plot itself suffer of multiple issues and inconsistencies, character chemistry is at it lowest! it is so cringe that I wished I could skip the conversation.

but there are few segments that shines like a diamond aka flashbacks with Elie Joel and tommy.

Everything about this game is amazingā€¦except Abby. Abbys character in if itā€™s self is not bad but playing her is excruciating and boring. There was not a single second I enjoyed. Every moment a cut scene happened I was hoping it would end, but it would not. In fact it felt she received more time than Ellie. I avoided all leaks and waited a year to play this game, the first is my favorite game, Ellie and Joel are my favorite characters written in any game. Not only weā€™re both treated poorly, they were replaced by Abby who is such a boring character(she also brutally murdered Joel and was repeatedly praised for it). This wasnā€™t brave writing, this was ego, sjw driven writing. It is what it is but it isnā€™t good.

I actually really enjoyed the looting/collecting sections of the game where everything slows down. I loved reading notes between couples, neighbors and friends and getting a view of how the outbreak impacted individuals. The apartments and buildings you roam are so detailed I almost felt like a voyeur; they are incredibly engaging environments for me. Really wonderful pacing, I would say. Also, I must say it is strange that what is perhaps the best audiovisual presentation on Playstation is not mentioned here. Perhaps that is the downside of Naughty Dog being predictably excellent in this department.

I can't think of any game in recent memory that I have walked away feeling more conflicted over than TLOU2. For just as many amazing moments I experienced there were just as many negatives that brought it down from those amazing heights.

The main question however will be how does it compare to the first?

The best analogy I can give is to compare it between that movie you love and a tv series you love.

The first Last of Us is like a movie. The movie is shorter but its pacing is perfect, its story is succinct, on point, not a moment is wasted and everything flows perfectly from one scene to the next. Itā€™s the kind of thing you can watch over and over again at any point in its theatrical run.

The Last of Us part 2 is like a season of a series. Overall, itā€™s an amazing season but there are a few episodes where things take a dive, maybe a few slumps or bumps in the road but overall it comes together in the end nicely.

Is The Last of Us part 2 a worthy successor to the original?

In many ways, yes.

Is The Last of Us Part 2 better than the original? Is it the kind of game that when people look back in history will garner praise and admiration on the same level as the first?

Despite all the things I feel it did well I think you would be hard pressed to find many people out there who would be willing to say yes.

For all those who want a more in depth review head over to my Gamespot blog and check it out.

I waited to post this until I finished the game.

"Much of the violence you inflict goes unexamined, which makes the gruesomeness of it just unpleasant" is purely a very personal opinion. The violence in the game is very appropriate taking into account the context of the game and the story elements. The game goes for a largely realistic experience, and the violence whether in combat or cutscenes follows suite. Realistic violence in a story where post-apocalyptic soldiers, religious fanatics and slavers are trying to kill you is appropriate, especially when the motivations of the offenders is explained within the story. I am not sure how much of an "examination" this review felt was required to justify that.

I would suggest this reviewer be relegated to T and below games.

I don't think anyone can arguably say the attention to detail and production value is nothing short of spectacular. However, this is a game, and the gameplay is mediocre, often at times, even poor, with extremely dated mechanics. That is something that CANNOT be overlooked.

I share a similar sentiment that after about 15 hours in, the repetition of encounters and dull dated mechanics had me wanting to reach the end of the game. And the game definitely dragged on 10 hours longer than it needed to be. There were some very fun high octane moments, but they were far and few in between the endless repetitive boring encounters you have to slog through for its entirety.

Were there elements I loved, of course, such as attention to details, visuals, sound design, exceptional voice acting. But these things are not what make a game great, they should be there to enhance the game not be its main focus and back bone. The fact the game feels almost identical to play to the first installment, which was made in 2013 is ridiculous, and that too has pretty poor mechanics and boring gameplay.

Unfortunately, Naughty Dogs must've loved their own work so much that they felt they didn't need to evolve in any shape or form. A real shame, can you imagine how good this game could've been with a complete overhaul of gameplay and mechanics.

did you guys see the amount of detail in the world? every single streetsign is readable, and there are a lot of different ones for all the different areas (e.g. the neighbourhood watch in hillcrest) and all of the letters or advertisers you find on pinboards, 99% are readable, all the info and educational posters in the hospital,.... holy cow! never seen anything this immersive and detailed in a videogame. i know, i know, i'm oozing fanboy right now, i'm sorry.

@RaveNRolla: totally agree, from a technical standpoint the game is extremely impressive. The level of detail is simply staggering theres no doubt about that. My issue lies with the flat characters, dull and dated gameplay and the very one dimensional story. I'm about 15-20hrs in and I'm almost forcing myself to keep playing and that's not great.

@RaveNRolla:

There are some that are too low res to read such as notices on walls in buildings at times. Especially certificates or Diplomas. But i took it they probably used staff ones from Naughty Dog and didn't want them too legible.

i know it blew me away but i am a nitpicker i found a total of 5 faults in the game :) . Sometimes the smashing glass sound doesn't play when you break the window of a vehicle. There are 3 spelling errors in the notes overall that you find and one grammatical issue. There is also animation frame skipping on the character that opens the Hospital door for you to go down below later on as Abby.

However you are right , in general this is amazing. Apart from the overuse of the same vehicle number plates i was really impressed. They have really nailed convincing water especially now. If you compare the quality of the water rendering compared to the last Uncharted spin off game it is so much better. There was always a stair stepping issue in Naughty Dog titles to do with waterfalls especially however here it is far less an issue than ever before.

**SPOILER I was quite amazed they got it to all run so stable on a PS4 PRO where the only real time it got framey is towards the end when you are running up the beach . Mostly if you run in the water by the yacht to go up the cliff before you get to the houses. It's understandable considering that water animation with seagulls flying around and such a vast draw distance too. For the most part Pop in is remarkably minimal in this game.

The worst cases of it are if you actually turn back the way you came and look out over a valley with a road bridge etc. You will see the glass of damaged vehicles pop into the model at a certain distance as well as some foliage but it's only noticeable in these sorts of situations.

**SPOILER** The stadium is what blew me away visually though. That is absolutely the best work Naughty Dog has even done graphically by far.

@deviltaz35: yeah the stadium is crazy. i didn't notice water as particularly great or particularly shitty, it just seemed fine to me. but usually if you do not take notice it means it's done really well.

there have been some cuts though. in the beginning in Jackson you see the same character models everywhere. i noticed that indian looking woman especially, because she's in that side story about the bear before you get to the street, then she's talking to her husband about their child being too young to go out near the children playing in the snow and i think she's used a couple of more times. so while that is a little bit immersion breaking the biggest part of the game i was really deeply immersed.

To me this game is a masterpiece. Technically is an outstanding achievement. Gameplay (if you like the first one) is great, ambience and voice acting topnotch... All remains is the story, to me it is very good.

I thought I would have no doubts about nothing... I was wrong... and thatĀ“s good writing.

Still confused about the 8 though...listen to Kallie on the After Dark Spoilercast and canā€™t come to terms with it. It seems all Kallieā€™s gripes were largely unjustified...such as the old infected battle in ground zero section that she was ā€œfrustratedā€ with? Or the uneasiness she experienced when having to make tough kills-I played through entire game and didnā€™t feel anything was as over the top as she claimed it to be. As far as violence being ā€œunexaminedā€ it most certainly was based on the end of the game. As for the looting that was a hallmark of the game, not a means to knock it. Also, playing on hard is not the developer intended starting difficulty. When you open up empty drawers that the devs removed items from higher difficulties. If you played moderate, you werenā€™t needing to e sure you loot everything cuz there is a decent amount, so a bogus complaint.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

finished it, loved it. took me a whole week, 49 hours in the end (i played very slow, exploring every thing mind you).

i thought playing this would give me insight into some of the hate the game has been getting. but i still don't get it. so please enlighten me, what is everyone so riled up about? (i succesfully avoided all spoilers).

now the story isn't as good as the 1st in my opinion, it doesn't carry the same weight as "we'll save humanity" but it deals with the aftermath of the ending, which i liked. and it still is one hell of a story to tell though. killing Joel and then making us understand why Abby did it and making her a likable character was a probably not an easy thing to do. it worked on me though. the finale was kind of crazy. the last fight was something i really didn't want to do and i hesitated a lot especially when the game wants you to finish Abby. fck no, i thought, stop it, Ellie! in the end it's a half-sad (Ellie), half-happy (Abby) ending which i liked.

gameplay is a straight improvement over the 1st. maps are huge and naturally beautiful to play in. encounters where you can lure enemies into infected or vice versa are more common. proning is a nice addition. personally i think the dodge was a mistake though as it makes combat too easy (you have all those tools AND can basically never get hit by melee). but there are fights build around it, so you can't play without it. i played on hard and generally the game was a bit too easy and gave me far too much ammo. i hope survivor does better, and that they release grounded mode at some point, as the first game could be tough as nails sometimes.

most emotional moment: to be honest there were several, but this one stuck with me: finding dead Alice in the Aquarium and only then realizing that i killed her with Ellie 20 hours ago and remembering that she was "just another random dog" to me back then. that got me good.

Edit: spelling.

Edit 2: added SPOILER warning

@RaveNRolla: lol that was well done. What about the first time you blow a dog in half with a mine? I then had to crouch down next to half a dog to clear out the remainder of enemies from the section. It is rather cruel that Naughty Dog lets you get to know Alice so well beforehand though lol. Brilliant play on their part to get at the emotions.

I think this is the key word... How you see Abby in the end of the playthrough with her.

I loved the game and I had the same exact feelings you have. I started in on point of view and ended in the other side... ThatĀ“s how you know the game worked or not for you.

@blindbsnake: yeah, when Abby offed Joel and Ellie was screaming "i'll kill you!" i was totally with Ellie at that moment. but as the story progresses you start to understand that Abby's reason for killing Joel is no different from what Ellie is doing. In fact Ellie is even more ruthless.

@RaveNRolla: I said this before... You are only playing the Abby that kills Joel when you are playing with Ellie. That happens because Ellie and Abby have a similar path. The Abby journey is a journey of loss, Ellie journey is a trip into hell.

Both have their revenge, and both of them lost everything as the result of it... I truly love this game, every day a little more.

@blindbsnake: **SPOILER** Actually not entirely true as Abby ends up looking after Lev and she will be ok. Ellie ends up with no-one . It's not really clear how long she was away though as that farmhouse definitely looked ill kept when she returned compared to the original time she is there.

@deviltaz35: i'm not sure where Jackson is (i would imagine it's close to Canada) and not interested enough to look it up, but i do know where California is. it was probably a long trip, even though she used a boat (or did she only find abby's boat, i don't remember?)

@deviltaz35: "Abby ends up looking after Lev and she will be ok."

She was obviously tortured and probably more things we donĀ“t know nothing about... She as Lev, ok... Ellie is free to return home or search for a new beginning. There is bittersweet in both endings paths...

@blindbsnake: well abby is a bit more of a happy ending, since she found the fireflies and is returning to them in the end. at least that is what's suggested through the story. both her and lev might as well have died in a shipwreck 10 minutes after Ellie leaves. but i want it to be the former.

@RaveNRolla: "abby is a bit more of a happy ending, since she found the fireflies"

As I hear someone asking... does she really found them?Uhm... I donĀ“t know... Maybe it was a trap from that group that grab her, or something else...

I just want Abby and Ellie to be happy... enough of misery...

@blindbsnake: yes, of course it could be a trap, even after all the questions about where she was stationed, but as i said i'm hopeful for them.
