Pyre Review

  • First Released Jul 25, 2017
    released
  • PS4
  • PC

There can be no victory without sacrifice.

Editor's note: Pyre was designed and written by former GameSpot editor in chief, Greg Kasavin.

Competitors strive to win. Criminals yearn for freedom. These pursuits go hand in hand in Pyre, the latest game from Bastion and Transistor developer Supergiant Games. And like those games, Pyre enchants your eyes and ears with beauty at every turn. But this time around, its greatest feat is the unrelenting pull of its characters, a mix of passionate beings that fight for salvation, revenge, and revolution.

Now Playing: Pyre Video Review

That isn't to take away from Pyre's unlikely mix of fantasy RPG elements and--of all things--sport. You are one of many exiles unjustly trapped in the purgatory-like Downside for crimes against the Commonwealth, but exiles that manage to win enough competitions known as "rites"--3v3 matches that incorporate elements of football and basketball--have a chance at redemption. Your journey to build a team of champions takes you across the Downside and back in search of challengers and new skills, with each match bringing you closer to understanding your allies' and enemies' motivations.

Your basic objective during a rite is to maintain possession of an orb while sprinting, dodging, and leaping towards your opponent's goal on the opposite end of the court. Run it in, throw it in, or jump overhead into the goal to douse the opposing team's pyre and reduce its energy. If a team's pyre is depleted, they've lost the match. You only control one character at a time, and will frequently switch control among your triumvirate to jockey for position on the field, or to take advantage of the nine classes' unique offensive and defensive maneuvers. When Pyre hits its stride, rites become fast-paced mind games that call upon your ability to turn on a dime and come up with new strategies under tense circumstances.

No Caption Provided

One rule in particular pushes you to consider all of your options when it comes to scoring against the other team. Should you physically carry the orb into their goal, the character who scores will have to sit out until the next goal. This can be negated, however: you need only throw the orb into the goal instead. Shooting the orb rather than carrying it comes with its own risks, as the shooter must charge up an arc according to the distance to the goal. In process, that player is vulnerable to attack from the other team. The penalty for being attacked is a temporary banishment from the court for a few seconds, which can leave your own goal open to attack. Weighing the pros and cons of shooting versus rushing is one of many negotiations you must make, often with little more than a second to make up your mind.

Pyre is worth playing for its exciting matches alone, but what makes it worthy of renown is how it leverages the tension of competition to tell a captivating story. Like Roman gladiators, the characters you bring into battle are ultimately competing for freedom. Lose these pivotal liberation rites, however, and kiss that chance goodbye. With a fixed number of liberation rites throughout the story, you have limited chances to help your friends. And while it can be heartbreaking to watch your opponent ascend rather than one of your party members, there are bigger stakes at play that weigh heavier as time goes on.

Your team operates under the tutelage of a revolutionary figure with plans to overthrow the corrupt Commonwealth--it will only work if you effectively liberate enough characters in your party to fight the good fight at the end of campaign. It behooves the cause, then, to put your best characters forward, but sending off champions is bittersweet as you have to say goodbye and carry on with less experienced characters. And no matter what, when the final rite passes, those who remain must relinquish hope and live out their remaining days in the Downside. Having control over who stays and who leaves (and when) allows you to shape the relationships and interactions that define your journey, and your outlook on the conflict at large.

No Caption Provided

Were it not for Pyre's elegantly written characters, the consequences of your decisions wouldn't carry nearly as much weight as they do. Every exile you meet bears a unique backstory and personality, and the nine that join your cause stir up emotions both in you and among each other. Hedwyn's unrelenting optimism, for example, becomes all the more meaningful when you understand that it's a coping mechanism for constant heartbreak. Pamitha, a cold and fearsome Harpy, seems less imposing and more fragile by the time you realize that her family ties complicate her position on your team. You feel proud when a rite is won and you've guided a dear friend to freedom, but failure and guilt are only a few mistakes away--a very real threat in the latter half of the game.

But win or lose, your journey continues. There are no game over screens, only bad endings if you rack up enough losses. Regardless of the outcome of an individual rite, your exiles earn experience towards enlightenment and get to choose between a small selection of special abilities as they level up. You can also acquire talismans to benefit individual characters or the team at large. Beyond who you take into rites, and who you converse with during your limited downtime, character progression and customization is yet another way that Pyre allows you to personalize your journey.

Although Pyre is designed to be replayed and supports that quite well through the power of choice, you thankfully aren't required to restart the game in order to jump back into competition. A local versus mode gives you the chance to compete outside of the campaign, which is appreciated given that there are less than 30 matches throughout the story. With every character (including your various opponents) and item unlocked, versus mode also allows you to explore the full potential of the Pyre's roster in ways the campaign doesn't. The only catch to PvP is that rites are at their best when you're on even footing with your opponent, and it only takes a few matches with less experienced players to highlight the conspicuous absence of online play.

No Caption Provided

Pyre's competitive side is a wonderful surprise, both for how it introduces a brand new sport and for how it seamlessly connects to a narrative filled with heartfelt characters and tragic circumstances. But it's all held aloft by relentlessly beautiful artwork and a masterful soundtrack packed with a diverse selection of genres and instrumentation. Every inch of the lush Downside, and every second of your journey, is a delight for the senses.

And thus it's all too easy to fall in love with Pyre. It's immediately attractive. Its songs dance in your head long after they debut. And before you know it, you find yourself driven to get better at rites and perform at the top of your game. Likewise, you can't help but reflect on your partners in the Downside--those you trained, as well as those you neglected. Supergiant Games has created something special that lives on in your heart. And against great odds, it's invented a sport that could have stood on its own without the story it's attached to--but it's so much better because it is.

I feel like the game would be a lot better with online multiplayer where you could go through the campaign matches with human opponents. Maybe even that was the plan in the beginning but then they cut the features for some reason. The Rites gameplay is very well thought out. It's just that the AI can't handle it. On many occasions it gets confused and lets you win.

The choose your own adventure part did not make a huge impression on me either. The characters were not so intriguing for me and some of them I'v sent home before I even got to know them well enough. The music is also not so good IMO this time compared to Bastion and Tranzistor. The Artstyle is rock solid thought as usuall.

Still, I like this game but what I like about it is hard to explain and should not be spoiled anyway. There is a deeper meaning that it wants to teach the player and I found that pretty cool.

The sport is hardly new. While having the three unit types is unique, the sport is almost identical to Pitball on the PS1. Which is not a bad thing, because Pitball was awesome.

If I didn't knew who developed this game, I could swear it was the guys that did The Banner Saga. Similar art styles, I guess.

Loving the art direction and the intriguing story so far. The whimsical characters and setting create a wonderful tone for this unique game as well. However, not really feeling the actual gameplay loop as of yet. Only a few hours in and it's already feeling a bit repetitive and dull. You get some interesting dialogue and exposition to move the story along. Make a mundane choice about which area to "explore". Some more exposition.

Then you get to play the actual game i.e. the Rites. Which amounts to little more than grabbing the orb, running a circle around the opposing the team, shooting the orb, repeat and win match.

Then repeat the whole thing over again.

And the music is good but nothing stellar. Lays a nice backdrop to the setting but does little in the way of drawing you into the world or emphasizing any key moments.

So far, the game's story and characters are enough to keep me interested but the overall package is kind of meh, IMO. Here's hoping it ramps up a bit and breaks the so far repetitive loop.

@l_willard: Feeling you on this one. The stuff that happens in between the Rites seems pretty linear and stale. The biggest choice I have had (which normally all take the form of which path to take, and seem pretty inconsequential) was which item on a 3 path choice I wanted most. There is some choice in skill progression I suppose, but even that feels limited. Combat is super fun though, so Ill trudge through it for that.

@l_willard: almost a dead on description of my thoughts. I read it was a party based for, I was thinking turn based, or at least actual battles. That would have made this game immaculate, if it had turn based gameplay like persona or old school rpgs. I just can't help but feel disappointment knowing that all I get to play is that darn Powerball, which should have been a side activity. I can see as I get unlocks,& the opponents get trickier, it can possibly be a challenge, but it's just not fun to me. The art design, story & writing is what has me coming back so far. Bravo on those fronts, since it's the same artist from bastion & transistor, only this is leagues ahead of those when it comes to the entire visual package.

Boring me to absolute tears. The whimsical choose your own adventure novel isn't my bag, but the actual gameplay is severely flawed. The singular action with no AI actions in your team crossed with realtime play simply doesn't work. All you do is run for the Pyres and score 9 times out of 10

Amazing game. I was hesitant even though I loved Bastion, but my concerns were for naught. Gameplay, storyline, artistic direction all top notch.

One thing about Bastion and Transistor. I wanted to get through the story on these, but just didn't want to invest the time to get good at them with so many AAA games waiting to be played. I wanted a casual storyline experience that couldn't happen due to difficulty spikes putting a halt to my fun. Don't get me wrong I played through both Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne solo (beat them) so I don't mind the right kind of difficult game. The games do have some heart to them for sure! They just need a casual stress free option for people who aren't looking for a Dark Souls experience. Witcher 3 got the difficulty options so right. Supergiant could learn a thing from them in that area. This game has no appeal for me.

@forester057: What an earth are you talking about. Pretty much all of their games were easy and iir had difficulty modes? Pyre certainly does. Even then, you can pretty much play them blindfolded to a degree. They're not hard games. If that's your basis for Pyre having no appeal you, like 90% of other people just haven't really looked behind the curtain of this game.

I loved Bastion and Transistor because of standard RPG gameplay and uniqueness at the same time, not sure I want a "sport RPG" though. Pass.

@eLite0101: standard RPG is turn based final fantasy & dragon quest. Those were action/rpg games. Your point still stands, i just couldn't let that go.

I really liked bastion, but Supergiant makes another game that looks turn based. It is turn based? I can't really tell, for me the gameplay looks like Eternal Sonata on acid for me.

@santinegrete: I wish. There is a single orb in a closed off area, & you have 3 characters you control. The AI controls 3 characters, also, that are your competition. There is a flame on each side that's like a goal. Only one person on your team can move at a time (whoever has the orb). Once the match begins, you go for the orb & try to slam it (just touch it) into the other teams flame. The players without the orb have a circle around them, some have bigger ones & are slow, others have smaller ones but are fast. If that circle touches someone period, they get banished for a set period of time (5 to 11 seconds I think, depending on stats). Basically you can make it so it's 3 on 1 or 3 on 0 if you take out the other players like that. I haven't had to yet, as it's been straightforward on normal difficulty (grab orb, run around opponents & touch flame). They all get special moves, & increased stats as they face harder opponents, but it's like playing a point & click adventure until you play that game. Once done, you make a few choices though pressing a button, then go to the next match. Wash rinse repeat. The best part is the writing & the characters, as you truly wonder where it's going, & it's out there (which I like). Hope that helps.

@bat725: I'm still furious at Microsoft for throwing Supergiant out the window. They suck so much butt with indie games this generation, it's awful. I stuck with xbox because I've been a huge Halo nerd since forever, and then they crapped on me with a god awful story in H5. I've been on the train since forever, but Xbox is just so dumb these days lol. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH -____-

@kiloman_74: I've been saying this for ages "I really hope Microsoft pull it out of the bag with this. I really hope Microsoft make an impact with that." But I'm starting to lose faith. I haven't turned my X1 on in months and since I have a gaming PC anyway, I have no reason to get an X1X. Here's hoping Halo 6 is an improvement over 5. I didn't hate 5, but it was nowhere near the series' best.

Hmm... I wonder what Greg Kasavin would have reviewed this game if he still reviewed games on here. I don't know, it just seems like his type of game :P. Ironically, at least in my opinion, Greg Kasavin was a really great, respectable critic (no offense to anyone else). The games he seemed to like a lot, were the games I always ended up liking too it seemed, but I never touched any of his games him and his coworkers created. Bastion came out, and I didn't play it, so I didn't feel like playing Transistor, and with that said, I probably won't play this one. Well, not anytime soon anyway. They're probably good, but I just never played them.

Lotta hype for this one.

Im going to keep an open mind, but as of this moment...i dont get it. Is the whole game merely instances of this "sport"-- which reminds me of Nintendo Ice Hockey with its different sized players, from first impression--

Is the rest of the game just dialogue?

Im interested in learning more, i just hope there is more.

Wow this game looks stunning...

And that "sport" looks like a blend of football and League of Legends... the studio should explore some major e-sport possibilities, depending on how good feedback is. On that note, I'm surprised there's no online competitive MP.

I saw the graphics and a fire-related name, and thought this was a review of Sundered for a few seconds.

Then I was like, "Wait, no. This is a different game."

Seems like a damned good one, though. IT'S STILL 2017; the great games keep rolling in!

Thanks for the review.

@pcps4xb: That is my current plan, although I'll wait for the reviews. It certainly looks like a worthy game -- but looks can be deceiving. Four more days.

Chances are I'll pick up Pyre sooner or later. I haven't played any sports games since the days when the Playstation 2 was current, so it's probably time to try a new one.

@Renunciation: I usually "wait and see" too, but with the 17 dollar price tag and the fact that the premise is intriguing and the art is GORGEOUS, I figure I can take a gamble. I so rarely do, I feel like this one deserves it. Even if the game ends up being average, I won't regret the price of admission. Just the visuals justify that much for me. I also loved the voice acting (albeit limited) that I heard in the trailer.
