Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Review

  • First Released Mar 5, 2013
    released
  • PS3

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 retains the series' impressive visuals and its accessible combat, but gets bogged down by its focus on storytelling.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is a game that knows its audience. Picking up where its predecessor left off, it tells the ongoing tale of young ninja Naruto Uzumaki's struggles as the Nine-Tails' jinchuriki and his complex relationship with Sasuke Uchiha. It also covers the five kage summit and the outbreak of the fourth great ninja war.

Now Playing: Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Video Review

If none of this means anything to you, Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is not the game for you. It spends tremendous amounts of time on storytelling, and there are so many characters, factions, rivalries, chakras, jutsus, and other aspects of Naruto history and lore at play that unless you have a working familiarity with all this stuff ahead of time, you're going to be completely lost. The series hasn't lost its knack for eye-popping boss battles and amazing ninja powers. But even diehard Naruto fans will find that this latest entry fumbles the pacing in its single-player Ultimate Adventure mode by spending far too much time hitting you with conversations and cutscenes and not nearly enough time letting you meaningfully participate in the story.

Of course, you can always skip the story sequences and get right to the next gameplay section, but the story is such a focus here that if you don't have an interest in watching this game unfold its tale, then there's little point in playing the game at all. Well over half of the time it takes to get through the single-player campaign is taken up by cutscenes and chitchat. You often watch several minutes of cutscenes, take control of a character to move him or her through an environment, maybe stopping to talk to other characters now and then, and then watch several more minutes of cutscenes. Sometimes, those cutscenes are action-packed and entertaining, but there are also lots of long expository sequences in which characters just stand around calmly talking to each other. Yes, there are intense battles from time to time, but there aren't nearly enough of these to support the bloated narrative.

When you do have to fight, you find that you can easily pull off incredible-looking techniques regardless of which character you happen to be controlling at that moment. There are dozens of playable characters in Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, but they all do attacks, build up chakra, and perform combos with the same button presses and combinations. This is a pick-up-and-play game: all accessibility, little depth. It's more about spectacle than skill, though the speed at which it moves means it does reward rapid reflexes, and it's exhilarating for a while to perform massively powerful, terrific-looking jutsu attacks with a few quick and easy button presses.

The opening battle against Nine-Tails is a stunner.
The opening battle against Nine-Tails is a stunner.

But there aren't tricky combos and high-level techniques to master; once you've got a handle on the basics, you can get better at implementing those techniques, but you aren't going to experience the gratification that comes with mastering higher-level skills, because there aren't any. The result is an experience that's immediately enjoyable, but doesn't stay rewarding for long. You may have a particular interest in playing as Deidara or Orochimaru or some other character, but because they all play so similarly, the unlocked characters you're frequently showered with as you progress through the Ultimate Adventure mode don't give you access to new strategies and new ways to play.

During specific fights, the free-flowing combat gets replaced by visually spectacular quick-time events that fully capture the kinetic energy of the anime's over-the-top battles. Whether it's a scene in which Naruto and Sasuke fight it out on the surface of a lake as a previous encounter comes flooding back to them or a sequence in which the massive, fearsome beast Nine-Tails threatens to destroy Hidden Leaf Village, these sections make for incredible viewing. These encounters and others present you with a choice of taking the legend approach or the hero approach. Your choice has a typically minor effect on how the battle plays out, and no effect on how the rest of the story plays out. It also determines whether you earn more hero experience or more legend experience, each of which gives you access to different types of items to use in battle. This does provide an incentive to return to earlier battles and choose the alternate approach just to see what impact it has, but that impact is usually disappointingly minor.

Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 also introduces mob battles in which you take on numerous easy, incapable enemies at once. They're mechanically dull, but moves that let you leap instantly from one enemy to another give these battles a visual energy, at least on the PlayStation 3. On the Xbox 360, these battles are interrupted by severe hang-ups that not only break up the flow of battle but can also result in the game failing to recognize your button inputs. The PS3 version doesn't suffer from this problem, but on both consoles, load times are frequent and long.

Close-ups and other dramatic camera work make battles fun to watch, but the underlying gameplay doesn't hold up for long.
Close-ups and other dramatic camera work make battles fun to watch, but the underlying gameplay doesn't hold up for long.

Outside of the single-player campaign, Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 lets you mix it up with other players locally and online. The online play functions well and allows you to jump into ranked or unranked matches and to set up tournaments for up to eight players. As with story battles, the accessibility and the impressive visuals make fighting against other players enjoyable from the get-go, but the simplicity of the action prevents it from holding your interest for long. The fighting system doesn't allow for much of a nuanced, tactical approach, and so your online opponents tend to spam the same few powerful attacks over and over again. It becomes routine and predictable quickly, and the prospect of unlocking more titles and images for your ninja info card (a profile that is made visible to and traded with your opponents) isn't a compelling reason to soldier on. This game is only for those who care to see Naruto's story continue to play out, and though it has its moments, it doesn't deliver quite the level of excitement you'd hope for from a game bearing the Naruto Shippuden name.

They would be doing us "fans" a treat if they work more on the combat system. The movie shows us stealth combat. Using tactics and using hiding behind trees and use the environment to reach or hide from enemies. I want that!

these reviews become more and more disapointing, do they use a magic 8 ball these days to decide who does these reviews....what id like to see is a a improvement to your reviewing system, take 3 reviewers to review a game so we get varied opinions. this just wont do

"Too many long dull stretches of storytelling"

I disagree, but lets say Carolyn is right. For one, cutscenes are SKIPPABLE. Next, it follows the manga, so of course there are long scenes.

"Combat lacks depth". Well if you look further, it has more than people give it credit for, but that's besides the point. The Storm series doesn't aim to be deep, but rather, to create flashy battles that faithfully recreate the anime. It's like complaining that Uncharted has no RPG elements to make Drake stronger as he progresses in game.

@kewldude475 It's a fighting game. A fighting game that throws all its chips in the story sounds like it's overcompensating to me.

Also, the series lacks depth. At least, depth that lasts when you play to win. Tried it twice, and I'm about to do it with this game too since my older bro blindly got this game, lying about its Game Rankings score so I wouldn't bug him about getting yet another shallow CC2 anime inspired O mashing fest we call a fighter.

Side note: Your analogy sucks. Uncharted is an ACTION GAME. This is a FIGHTING GAME. The FIGHTING in the FIGHTING GAME isn't DEEP. That's BAD for FIGHTING GAMES. Where do RPG elements come in as mandatory for action games? Deep combat is important to fighting games, but where do RPG elements come in for action games? That's why your analogy is flawed.

@kewldude475 I agree with the skipping cutscenes, but why would anyone do that if they're playing the story mode for the first time?

Also, not sure which manga you read but it doesn't follow the manga very well, especially at the end of the game.

@Speranza318 @kewldude475 The ending of the game felt so disappointing. I feel like they just rushed it just to get the game out. Its good in the beginning and middle part but the final chapters is where it falls apart.

The game looks fantastic, and the story is emotional and heartfelt with characters you'll love and want to know more and more about, but the battle system is just too easy and bland. It's so easy to pull of the flashy, explosive jutsu and whatnot that it all becomes just another attack in a matter of matches. And after a while, the fighting just gets too repetitive. :<

But then again, the series has always been for the fans. ^^;

WOW wow, give the poor women some slack, yes 6 is quite a harsh score but shes not that wrong, and shes reviewing the game in comparison to its predecessors REMEMBER UNS3 is actually the 4th game in the UNS series and when you review a game that's the latest in the series you expect the cons of the previous game to be !improved!. FOR 3 GAMES NOW (UNS 2 - GENERATIONS - UNS3) STILL HAS THE SAME SHALLOW COMBAT SYSTEM! if your a real 'beat em up' and you've played UNS for more than 5 hours you know that there is a very shallow depth to the combat ... NOT saying it isn't Fun but its just shallow and 2 more jutsu's per character would be nice . UNS1 was great because it was like the first of its kind, but 2 and generations were just updated copes one 1 with more characters... this game is fun but its farrrrrrrr from different and it certainly has payed great attention to its previous critiques

@DAVIDKROBSON To me I still think Storm 1 is the best Storm game in the Storm series (So far). It had lots of depth in the system, blance system, and it was fun. But your comment is right, she has done some review from the other Naruto Storm games so she does no what to expect and not to expect. But why all anime games she review are bad?

@flameon12346 @DAVIDKROBSON Your so right! the feel, the action, the story! it was such a good game, if only the series progressed up from there! if it did then we could have had one of the best anime games to date, but oh well we can still hope for improvement :P and you know i think the problem is with anime itself .... A good anime is deep, action packed, funny and enticing. The action is so good that it has you smiling, while sitting on the edge of your seat and the emotional side is so gripping that you cant help but feel what the characters are going through. now incorporating that all into game is tricky business, getting the balance just right is tough. remember when creating an anime game, your not just competing with all the other beatem ups out there, your also competing with the anime itself and living up to the expectation that the anime series has is very hard work.. so as a critique the bar is already very high, thus the reason 'I think' the reviews are very harsh.

@TeenageTom Yeah & like i said who uses english dubs while playing naruto or most of the anime games with j-audio & english subs support, english audio can't bring out the best of the emotions

The game is meant to be played in japanese, gamespot can find good reviewers for AAA anime games like ni no kuni but can't find a decent reviewer for naruto this is a crew joke , bring back reviewers & editors like Brian ekberg

@NitroNaruto @TeenageTom I don't think the language determines the score of the game. The gameplay is where the core of the game is.

She was being generous with the review...although the real reason I personally gave this game a low score is because of how much the story changed from the manga. Not only is the story told slowly and inefficiently (as Carolyn mentioned) it's plain different -in a bad way.

At least Ninja Storm 2 followed the story very closely and added the Naruto/Sasuke fight in Orochimaru's den beautifully (better than the manga, in fact). Here they have changed the whole fight between the Kages and Madara, and again between Naruto and Tobi. Any fan of the series would be thinking the same thing as me during the game - why did they change the storyline?

@Speranza318 For me some parts of the story were very good like the birth of naruto chapter. It was kinda drawn out but I felt like that the strongest part of the story mode. But compared to storm 2, this game kinda felt disappointing.

@NitroNaruto Just enjoy the game, i remember when some casual reviewers with no experience on fighting games gave bad scores to KOF XIII and it resulted to be the best FG game of the year according to the FG community, if you are a fan of naruto and you feel that is an improvement over the last game just enjoy it and have fun.

@alenth I am definitely going to buy it, but a big name like gamespot has a influence over fans, so many people will not buy the game because of the score, they wont even bother to see how badly the review is done

Reviewers these days are paid to promote games, i remember gamespot giving WWE12 a bad review & that year they didn't have their annual thing with The miz n all

This year there is some paid Injustice done by gods among us, to lower the sales of potential threats to these gods

OMGOSH!!!!!!!!!!!........... WHAT!!!!!!!! This is unexpected. How can this be, I thought it was going to get a 7.0 but a 6.0 is just got me screming Noooooooooo. I can't believe it. This got to be the worse Storm game yet. How it goes backwards? Well I have to got to school and be back to post more. But I have one question, why the review wasn't posted at the main page of Gamespot? I had to check Naruto games to see the review. I guess only the good games get that type of thing.

I am utterly disappointed with the review after the same person gave a better review on tomb raider

Firstly the reviewer doesn't evens seem to pronounce the name correctly, then the use of okish english dubs instead of Japanese audio, i am sorry but this war the worst review on gamespot

maxwell mcgee did a better job with the last game, newbies shouldn't be allowed to review stuff they aren't even familiar with, it's lame reviews like these which will impact the sames of good games like Naruto storm series & these reviewers give good scores to COD's & The yearly installments of sports games, even though i play such games there is hardly anything that makes those games worth 8.5+

Thanks for the review though, now i know i am buying the game

AND GAMESPOT YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN YOUR FIGHTING GAMES, should have realized this sooner when gems like DOA5 got low scores while BlazBlue got editors choice

I WONDER IF YOU GUYS PURPOSEFULLY GAVE LOW SCORES TO NARUTO JUST TO PROMOTE INJUSTICE : GODS AMONG US, SO TO BOOST THE SALES OF THAT GAME

I Can see it Now INJUSTICE : 9/10, Editors choice, Spike TV Fighting game of the year <_<

@NitroNaruto I don't think Gamespot gave Naruto Storm 3 a bad review just to make Injustice have a better score. I highly doubt that Injustice will even score better then Mortal Kombat 9. And what wrong with using English Dub as the review then Japanese Sub? I would reather hearing people talk English so all people can get a better understanding not because it better.

@NitroNaruto compared to naruto , injustice doesn't give it's players as much opportunities as naruto does . naruto has far more characters , better way of awakening , 3d fight not 2d , and gives you the ability to escape from your opponent while in injustice you might be killed cause you were trapped the whole match cuz your opponent used the same hit again and again . this review is the worst scumbag i've seen in a while .

I agree with the score and how she explained her reasoning for the score. The game is pretty much spam attacks while playing online. And if you aren't already a naruto fan then the game isn't really appealing to new audiences to the series. Nor is it a technical fighting game that people seem to believe it is, but more of a game you play with a few buddies.

It's painfully obvious when a reviewer doesn't understand the source material (note: doesn't mean being a fan), and Carolyn has shown time and again that venturing outside the mainstream is way out of her depth.

Disclaimer: not a fan of Naruto myself.

I don't really know how these people in Gamespot review the game. This game is for the fans and those who are value in fighting system. I bet you are not Naruto's fan so you give it a low score. Frankly speaking, score like 6.0 is insulting and it is very bad.

In order to properly review this game, you have to be a fan of the series. You can't just review the game without adequately comapring it with the series. That said, I wonder why their review came out this late, and why it wasn't posted on their wall like Tomb Raider and Sim City

they should realy start getting second opinions before they go posting reviews. what is this reviewer trying to say anyway? first they say that the story parts are long and boring, yet they seem to think they are interesting enough to want to sit through to enjoy the story......it more sounds like this reviewer hates this game and is trying to disguse their unbiasedness
