Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes Review

Kept you waiting, huh?

Metal Gear Solid's hallmarks have never been represented better than in Ground Zeroes, the prologue chapter to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It combines tense stealth and best-in-class cutscene direction, and these aspects stand above any other game in the series, but naturally, the narrative ultimately concludes sooner than you'd like. It may only take you an hour or two to finish the main objective, but the game doesn't totally end there. In addition to filling in some of the gaps between Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and the Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes introduces a new stealth system and an open-world format that's perfect for experimentation. Even though you're prepared for the next chapter, what's the rush? After the credits roll on the main mission and a handful of side activities unlock, the best part of Ground Zeroes is just getting started. With a wealth of secrets to find, and new challenges to master, chasing the endgame will keep you entertained for hours on end.

The story sequences in Ground Zeroes captivate with impressive cinematography, properly showcasing the exploits of the brutal yet heroic Big Boss; a battlefield prodigy who long ago disavowed his allegiance to the US Government and established his own military for hire. Metal Gear has always been recognized for having impressive cutscenes, but they're usually hindered by inconsistent animation and over-the-top voice acting. Thankfully, the opposite is true in Ground Zeroes. Characters move and speak with a natural grace, and even though it's jarring to hear the recognizable Kiefer Sutherland voice Big Boss in place of fan-favorite David Hayter, his delivery is far more realistic and believable. No matter the platform you play it on, you're treated to impressive lighting and masterfully crafted character and environment models that, along with the renewed cast, elevate Ground Zeroes' cutscenes above and beyond those from the past. They may not stick around for long, but they certainly leave a lasting impression.

Now Playing: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - Video Review

Your mission begins in a typically dramatic fashion on a dark and stormy night at Camp Omega--a military black site on the coast of Cuba. You need to infiltrate the heavily guarded base to rescue a member of your entourage, and with only a shred of evidence to point you in the right direction, you have to use your powers of observation, eavesdropping, and some light interrogation to succeed.

Big Boss doing what he does best.
Big Boss doing what he does best.

With Ground Zeroes’ minimal HUD, a narrow third-person camera angle, and a sprawling base filled with potential threats , sneaking behind enemy lines has rarely felt so tense and immersive. Metal Gear famously stars characters with exceptional sneaking skills, but they also come equipped with fantastical gadgets that make their jobs easier by revealing enemy locations and alert states. Unlike in older games, there's no automated radar to track nearby enemies in Ground Zeroes; the only way to track enemies is to first spot them with your own eyes, and only then, after marking them with your binoculars, can you follow their movements. Knowing where any of the dozens of enemies are yields a small amount of confidence, but it's a minor consolation when every corner you turn may present unpredictable challenges.

Sticking to the shadows, crouch-walking behind objects, or crawling through the grass keeps you out of sight in most cases, but should an enemy catch a glimpse of Big Boss, you have a brief opportunity to redeem yourself when he enters reflex state. This bullet-time-like slow-motion effect gives you a few seconds to disable your spotter with short-range melee attacks or a well-placed shot to the head in order to avoid triggering a base-wide alert. Does it give you an unfair advantage over your enemies? Of course, but like the marking system, it also makes the transition into immersive, open-world stealth a little easier to swallow.

A Snake's eye view of Camp Omega.
A Snake's eye view of Camp Omega.

Unless you're a naturally gifted expert, it's a given that you'll eventually be spotted. Immediately, alarms blare, and enemies, sometimes in armored vehicles, flock to your last known location. You have two options: face them head-on or flee and wait for them to give up their search. It's not a binary system, however, and even though you may have lost your pursuers, they can remain on high alert for some time. In the past, a handy icon and a countdown timer would help you determine where your enemies were and how long you had to remain in hiding before they gave up. Those features have been removed, so you have to monitor live radio communications to gather the same intel.

The need to pay attention to your in-ear radio--which can sound off at any time--and the removal of automated radar systems set Ground Zeroes apart from the rest of the series. Nothing is simply handed to you, and Ground Zeroes is a far more tense and rewarding experience for it. Even though marking enemies and having reflex at your disposal are helpful, you have to work to use them to your advantage. If you want to immerse yourself in the game even further, you can disable marking and reflex altogether for the ultimate challenge.

After the credits roll and a handful of side missions unlock, the best part of Ground Zeroes is just getting started.

How well you manage to complete your objectives determines the ranking you earn at the end of a mission, and everything, from the number of times you're spotted to the number of casualties you cause along the way, has an effect on your score and the rewards you earn. Such rewards include weapon drops at the start of missions and in-mission trials that can significantly alter your trajectory during repeat playthroughs.

Rankings aside, you don't need to sneak in the shadows if you don't want to, and with an entire military base's worth of toys at your disposal, sometimes it's fun to stand tall and announce your presence. Armed with C4 and RPGs, you're fully prepared to blow up vehicles, destroy watchtowers, and charge in, guns blazing, when the mood strikes you. Though you're encouraged to play into the game's stealthy trappings by your co-commander, there are plenty of ways to actively disrupt Camp Omega, and some side missions are designed with this sentiment in mind. In one, you're challenged to assassinate notorious war criminals, and another sees you firing explosives out of a helicopter to protect the extraction of a comrade.

Camp Omega is rife with explosive opportunities.
Camp Omega is rife with explosive opportunities.

This dichotomy between stealth- and action-oriented gameplay lends itself to fear, tension, and excitement. One moment you can hear a pin drop, and the next, you're bolting across a chaotic military base with bullets whizzing by your head and desperation clouding your focus. If this were a more linear experience, perhaps the allure of this contrast would wear thin, but there are so many ways to tackle individual missions, be it the path you take or the weaponry you choose, that there's almost never a shortage of new tactics to explore. When your only playground is a military base, it's easy to find new ways to entertain yourself in Ground Zeroes.

Unfortunately, if you hope to be entertained by an equal helping of Metal Gear's typically perplexing and intriguing narrative, you'll most certainly be disappointed. There's some fat to savor here, hints of what's to come in the next chapter of Metal Gear Solid V, but once you've digested the cutscenes that bookend the main mission, it's a pure gameplay-driven experience from then on out. Though it's unusual for everything to take place in a single location, there's so much to do and see, and whether you take a stealthy or head-on approach, infiltrating Camp Omega is a thrilling experience that shouldn't be missed.

The Good

  • Challenging and engrossing stealth mechanics
  • Extremely replayable
  • Realistic voice acting, dialogue, and animations

The Bad

  • Story raises more questions than it answers

Pretty sure EA and Activision are laughing their evil asses off right about now.

Nice little precedent the lemmings and GS have set with this little demo. Thank you for making gaming that much worst.

Remember to look back to this point, so you can see the reason why you are not expected to pay for demos. That way you will know who to blame , yourselves!!

Hope that one hour was fun........

Yeah if gamespot is going to give an 8/10 to what amounts to a glorified $30 demo posing as a game and not even mention how short it is as a negative even going so far as defending it than its pretty damn obvious they are getting paid for this review, nobody looking at this objectively could write this load of apologist rubbish. I think I will go to an honest site for my reviews.

I really want to try this out, but I just cannot support the idea that I would pay 50% of a full AAA title for an hour or two worth of content. As many have previously mentioned, this should have been free with a subscription-based service (e.g., PSN) or perhaps a demo with the MGS remakes or a digital purchase? Sorry you all, but if we continue to hash out money for these sorts of micro-economic "experiments" gaming will inevitably becoming more and more expensive (and hence more and more anti-consumer).

@xGarrettThiefX The beginning cutscene is 5-10 min, the mini cutscenes are about 1-2 minutes and the last one is about 10 min (saved the best cutscene for last).

$30 for a taste of next gen gaming

$30 for a taste of next gen metal gear solid

$30 to support the developers

its a steal / fair price IMHO, any higher would be a ripoff, any lower, they might as well not release it

pretty much they are saying "here I know you guys can't wait 1-2 years for the full game, here's a portion of the game for $30, have fun with it for now, when we finished the game you can buy it for $60 and we promise you it'll be worth your while"

whats there to complain about?

i don't see people complaining about call of duty basically being the same game, with the same engine, coated differently each year with a lackluster and short campaign but sold to you for $60 every year, why not complain about that? to me that's real money grabbing, that's real dishonesty, and YOU the consumers are continuously feeding them the money and yet you are here complaining about a MGS5 prologue for $30

@taiwanesebrotha Lot's of people complained about CoD. I can see where you're coming from but $20 would have been more reasonable even though IMHO they shouldn't charge for a demo at all.

This is the worst review I've ever seen on this site and represents a new low in any form of entertainment criticism. Usually if I don't like a review it's due to an opinion-based discrepancy, but this reviewer simply didn't do his due diligence as a critic. The job of critic might as well not even exist if what this reviewer did was representative of what they all do.

Give it whatever grade you like, but to neglect to highlight the price relative to the content length is inexcusable. That should be the focal point of this review, and it's clearly not. Warnings like that are the whole reason game reviewers exist in the first place. "It may only take you 2 hours or so." Nope, it's about a half hour less than that for even the worst MGS player, which is pertinent considering that 30 minutes represents 25% of the main game. Many finish in under an hour, and speed-runs can do it in 10 minutes. One guy finished it on a speed run in 6 minutes.

This review helps to open a dangerous precedent where formerly free demo-length content will not only be sold to begin with, but sold at the price of half a full game. This game is shorter than most movies and yet costs 3 times a movie ticket. I can go see an IMAX 3D movie in Manhattan (where it's much more expensive) and buy popcorn and a drink for similar to what this game costs, and actually get between 30-60 minutes more content (depending on how good you are at the game).

I'm sure this comment won't make that wacky "look at how stupid the comments are" video you do, however, because it actually might make the site look foolish for a change. I won't be visiting this site again, as there's plenty of other options when it comes to game reviews. All the reviewer had to do was put a disclaimer that the review didn't represent the value of the purchase and I'd respect the review much more. I'd still dislike it because I think games are products and should be reviewed for their value, but at least I'd understand the perspective and not feel as though the site were trying to lie to me.

@downloadthefile I wish every review would include the amount of time it took to complete the game by the reviewer. He did mention replayability but still, a main campaign should never be that short.

8/10? MGS game and got 8/10? Time to leave Earth. Well, i didn't play it yet, but 8/10 for MGS game is kind of fail. MGS4 got 10/10. But i understand that this is just a prologue. So hopefully Phantom Pain will get the rating we are used to with MGS.

@Viktor737 Dude, the game is being completed in 40 mins by some people. There are speed runs that can finish it in 10 minutes. Add the side missions and it's a barely 3 hour game if you know what you're doing already. And it's $30. So somehow this game, which is priced as half a full game but has only about 1/10 the content a game should have deserves a 10/10? Are you that much of a fanboy that money means nothing to you?

@downloadthefile Man, you are overreacting here. I am no way fanboy. I love MGS games but i can admit if anything sucks about it. And as i said, i didn't play Ground Zeroes yet, so i can't judge here much. I'm just saying that it's quite unusual for MGS game to get only 8/10 rating. But if it is as you said, then i agree with you that it sucks. $30 for barely 3 hours game is bad. But i'm afraid there is no chance for lower price, even if Konami wanted to. I believe there is a cost they have to pay to Sony and putting it on Blu-ray disc also costs something plus profit. Now i'm not defending them, i'm just saying logic. I agree that it's too expensive for such short video game anyway. Actually, this game should have never happen imo. They should have release it as a complete game with Phantom Pain. I know Kojima said that they released Ground Zeroes separately because he did it for us, so that we can play something until full game comes out. But i don't believe in this kind of crap. They did it because they want more money. And i don't like this, even if i like Kojima. I'm not sure if i'll get this. I don't even have PS4 yet and i don't wanna play it on PS3 because it sucks in visual quality. Hopefully, full game will be epic as usual.

As for what money means for me. I hate money, because whole world is too much about them. You are born and it's business for someone already. No one helps if there aren't money in it, unless the person is your good friend. It's the same in game development. Never trust bullsh*t like we did it for you, so that you can play something. They did it because they want more money. So yea, money means a lot. They actually means everything in this age. And it's extremely sad.

I don't like that it takes a few seconds to realize when it is Snake that is talking. It just isn't Snake without David Hayter voicing him. No offense to Kiefer Sutherland, but his voice just doesn't fit Snake. David Hayter has done the voice for too long to be replaced now. His cheesy moments were a part of Snake's charm.

Downloaded for €30-played it after a few beers, did everything wrong ( died a lot), watched all cut scenes and still finished in under an hour. The demo for mgs2 that came free with Zoe was much better value and did more for the Mgs story. Huge mg fan but feeling ripped off :<

@reza_razor so somehow a 50 minute game is justifiable to you because of this? a 50 minute game that costs half as much as some 50 hour games? The idea that they can't be profitable without selling you a bite for half the cost of a meal is insane, and they deserve to fail if that's actually true (which it clearly isn't or else they wouldn't be making a sequel).

You're being misled and taken advantage because you're a fan.

We should boycott these industries trying to make money off to a game that is close to a demo so you end up re-buying the whole thing later. Wait till it is fully release then buy. Thank you all!

@guardianofhonor Well, you're right. If someone intends only to play through the main mission once and that's it, then they definitely shouldn't buy it, but I doubt people would do that, that'd be dumb. It's worth going through more than once, twice, or even three times, and then you have a few side missions, and some unlockables.

Stop defending this glorified $30 demo, I did most of the side missions many of which were not very compelling and clearly just pasted in there to try and squeeze out more game time and still only took just a little over an hour.

Since you can do pretty much everything in less than an hour what is the point of playing it through 2 or 3 times unless you are trying to delude yourself into thinking you didnt just throw away $30 on a fucking demo?

Just did the Deja Vu mission. And some of it was goofy; I also liked that they remade some of the music when you're in the area of completion. However, I didn't like that when they used Snake's voice, they used Sutherland for what Hayter did, it just didn't sound right. So far, I've played the game for eight hours and got just about everything that worth getting.

I like the game a lot, and I'll probably play it until Infamous comes out in a couple of days, or until I get it. While the game doesn't have a lot of content, it has enough, and certainly has enough replay value to be worth the price it costs. If it was a full price game, then that's where it may not be worth it for those that are at all hesitant.

The game does however feature some story elements that some may dislike or be offended by if they catch and interpret it correctly. It has a lot of sexual overtones.

20 bucks is so worth it. I can't even believe the backlash. If Call of Duty in any of its forms can consistently sell so well, when in reality they're just $60 expansion and map packs offering next to nothing new at all, this game should really be a no brainer. I imagine to MGS fanatics like myself it is. I'll be replaying this constantly.

@OMGMrTea The game is 2 hours long. That is not investing a lot of of hard work and time relative to other full length games. How can you be so simple minded?

Your paying full price for a demo. Why dont you just give your car keys to the EA execs right now.

Demo? So this will be a part of The Phantom Pain?? Sorry but you're just a cheap a$$. 30$, seriously. I spent that just for a meal today. Give the developers some effing credit.

LOL are you serious? What a stupid comparison. So lets just say if i don't enjoy a game(for whatever reason) that takes me 10 hours to complete, it has more value than a game i really like to play which is "only" 2 hours?? That's just effing stupid, sorry. Quality over quantity, like always. And personal taste of course.

Considering Sims expansions offer more content for the same price, you're beyond deluded to point of a mixture of pitiful and sad.

@OMGMrTea I know how you feel, it is a good game, I scored it 7 outta 10 because I really hate the fact that the inventory/weapon system is gone and replaced with disposable weapons, but after putting alittle more time into it,I'm bumpin it up to an 8/10, the controls are great, I've never played a stealth game with controls this good, and theyre still familiar enough to those of us who put countless hours in all the older mgs games that we could pick it up and run with it,

I still want my finders keepers inventory/weapons system back, but the CQC, stealth, and gunplay are so much more satisfying in this game, it all moves so much faster and fluid than the other MG games and superior to other stealth influenced games I've played IMO.. Its well worth 30 if you are a fan of Metal Gear, but if its your first of the series( or if at least you haven't played much of any Metal Gear games and don't have a connection to the characters).. then yeah it's gonna probably feel like a demo, and that's going to turn some people off, understanding that makes It hard for me to blame them I guess.

I would not recommend it for someone just now getting into the MG series honestly.

Other wise, 20-30$ is not really that high as far as I am concerned, especially If you like actually mastering a game, this will take well over 1.5 or 2 hrs for that. you will get your moneys worth. Get all S-rank on hard mode on all missions and see how long that takes.

"Peter has finished nearly every game in the Metal Gear Solid series, and spent over 15 hours playing Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, divided between the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 versions of the game. "

Over 15 hours what has he been doing running in circles for 14 hours and 50 minutes? Probably got to the end in less then a hour and didn't want to finish it as he knew he would then realize he wasted too much money on a tech demo fueling Konami's new cash grab model. Developers are going to screw people more and more if gamers don't stop supporting their greed.

@Wrathesoul Simply given the fact that it is open world, a small one granted, and has I believe 4 or 5 side missions, there's instant replayability right there. It's also considerably cheap, less than half the price of a full fledged game. I've bought way more disappointing full price games than this.
