Into the wild.

Far Cry Primal is a case study in how a game's setting can drive its every layer, from the tone of its story, to the dangers of its world, to the brutality of its combat.

That setting is the Stone Age. It's 10,000 BC, and our protagonist Takkar is searching for the lost members of his Wenja tribe. They're scattered across the Oros Valley, a dense wilderness of forests, swamps, and frozen caves, complete with mammoths and sabertooth tigers. As Takkar, you'll build up a new Wenja village with a multifarious cast of characters.

Now Playing: Far Cry Primal - Video Review

This reconstruction sets up Primal's progression system. By recruiting the aforementioned Wenja--such as the shaman Tensay or the warrior Karoosh--you'll unlock new items, weapons, and abilities. When you look past the facade, it's essentially a new skin for the franchise's traditional upgrade structure. But it lends character to what could be a lifeless system.

As you build up your tribe from within, you encounter members of other groups, the majority of whom have plans contrary to your own. The identity of each of the game's three tribes, and the political dynamic between them, sets up conflicts in a natural way.

Building your village grants you new upgrades, equipment, and tools.
Building your village grants you new upgrades, equipment, and tools.

So too does Primal's world. In fact, most of the game's conflicts arise from nature. Primal still uses the basic open-world framework of a traditional Far Cry game, with a cascading series of outposts to capture, weapons to unlock, and upgrades to craft. But the Stone Age setting is far more foreboding than those of past Far Cry games.

Here, vicious animals travel in packs, striking as a collective whole while you slink through the undergrowth toward enemy camps. A day/night cycle also adds more tension to the world: predators are more abundant and aggressive in the darkness. Even now, after dozens of hours in this valley, I still feel anxious as the sun goes down, hoping I have enough animal fat to ignite my club and ward off hulking carnivores.

This focus on survival permeates Far Cry Primal. In the northern wastes, the cold becomes a factor, making each bonfire a glowing beacon of safety as you fight to stay warm. In Primal's lush swampland, avoiding danger means avoiding the water, where underwater predators abound.

There's a fine balance between tension and fun that elevates the whole experience.

As a solitary hunter with simple tools, you're also less equipped to defend yourself than the protagonists of Far Cry 3 and 4. Gone are handguns and grenade launchers--here you have spears, clubs, and slingshots. They not only bring a slow, measured pace to combat, but also add to Primal's overall identity and tone. You're a lone wanderer here, not a walking armory. And although there are more ways to die in this Far Cry than any previous entry, Primal never feels too difficult--there's a fine balance between tension and fun that elevates the whole experience.

On one of Primal's nights, the valley's lurking threats coalesced into a challenge that tested all of my knowledge of the game's survival systems. I was out of wood for spears. I was low on meat for health. I was hundreds of meters from the warmth of the nearest campfire. So by sprinting toward the closest sanctuary on my map--collecting hardwood for torches along the way, and relying on stealth and my few remaining arrows for defense--I trekked through one of the more stressful scenarios the game had to offer. Yet it was thrilling. This was Primal at its best.

The Stone Age setting can also be a detriment, though. The simple toolset serves the game's themes well, but with enough time, it becomes clear how limited your loadout really is. In stealth scenarios, I rely on my silent bow. In open combat, I swing my club wildly. When hunting elk and grizzly bears, I use my spears. There are several more creative tools, but by and large, I find myself relying on the same simplistic options time after time. Primal's reliance on Stone Age combat detracts from the emergent scenarios that occur elsewhere.

Certain animals function better as stealth companions.
Certain animals function better as stealth companions.

There are also powerful enemies whose excessive armor chips away at the fun. I had the best spear upgrades possible, but even at this point in the game's late hours, these armored brutes can take almost 30 seconds to bring down. That's not fun--that's tedium.

But then there's the Beast Master skill tree, and it's the most impactful change to the Far Cry formula. It allows you to tame the creatures in this ancient setting, recruiting them to hunt, fight, and travel with you.

Jaguars kill enemies without alerting larger groups. Wolves pounce on distant archers while you close the gap. You can also ride bears and baby mammoths, clawing and bashing your way through groups of warriors with little resistance. You can use your owl to scout the land ahead of you, tagging more dangerous fighters and dropping makeshift grenades into groups of enemies.

Beast Master abilities are the embodiment of Far Cry Primal's strengths.

Learning the unique abilities of each animal, and taking the time to experiment with them, is essential for your survival. After a while, your predator allies become an extension of yourself. They become the powerful weapons otherwise absent in the the abrasive wilderness.

These abilities are the embodiment of Primal's strengths. When it uses the Stone Age setting to elevate the combat and reinforce the brutality of nature, it thrives. It fosters a give-and-take relationship with the wilderness, granting you the means to survive, but also the threats you have to overcome. That focus on primitive times can become a hindrance at certain points, with limited tools and repetitive combat, but in the end, Far Cry Primal stays true to its callous setting, fleshing out every layer of the captivating world it creates.

Editor's Note: Far Cry Primal is now available on PC, and after taming numerous wild animals, liberating defended enemy outposts, and recruiting several members of the Wenja tribe, it's clear that Primal's PC version not only matches the quality of its console cousins, but slightly outpaces them in several ways, too. 60fps makes the brutal combat smoother. Detailed textures lend a more natural look to the Stone Age environment. Far Cry Primal's setting is its greatest strength, and in its newest form on PC, it's still worth the many hours it takes to explore.

@Feenspear: While you have a point that people will complain if a game is the same, and they will complain if it is different, that is people for you. Different people, different opinions. You are not going to change that by going on a tirade.

Take a breath, calm down, find your happy place.

I wish all games were $25 but we're not in 1994 anymore. Any Ho, I've been enjoying this game a lot so far, the story is simpler and the characters are more believable than the typical far cry game (i.e. african religious gun smuggler with annoying acting gone). The landscape is beautiful and dangerous to explore, lots of mountains and hills.

It's also refreshing to see a game without guns but you can throw just about anything including your clubs and the fire bows/spears takes some mastering. I'm glad this game was made, it opens up the pre-historic era up to gamers and future game makers.

@paullyv: Games didn't generally launch at $25 in '94 anyway. Gaming's actually more affordable now.

That review made the game seem like it should have got a 9. Reviewer seemed to really like it apart from the limitations with weapons. 8 is still a great score and I'm looking forward to playing this if GAME ever deliver my preorder which didn't turn up

Now that this Far Cry is out, maybe FC4 will come way down in price. That's the only way I'll buy a $60 game these days...when it's under $15 and includes all the DLC.

@Kingjames11: Not sure what console you have or if you have PC, but FC4 has been on sale for $30 which includes the base game and all the DLC/season pass. Eventually, as you said, it will go down wot $15 like Watch_Dogs did.

@skipper847: Same here man. Finished FC3 a while ago but only started Blood Dragon, and am only a third thru the main story in FC4. So even though I am interested in Primal, it's coming out way too soon, imho. It really feels like Ubi (and other publishers who do the same) are mainly just catering to the hardcore, I beat all games in a week so I can brag-type, when they crank them out that often. Course, it could be more about the quick $ in the end.

There's something about Ubisoft these days. Maybe they have just lost the ability to make a game that doesn't have the same mechanics as every other game they make or maybe its just because they are money hungry so they come up with a credible idea but slash the budget to the point where they can no longer do what they wanted so instead we get another downgraded shambles being passed off as the next big thing.

Considering FC is a AAA franchise, Ubisoft should have no excuses on the graphics in FCP compared to FC4. Watchdogs was the second to last straw for me. That game and even the idea looked great at the E3 showing then the release looks like a downgraded version of GTA IV.

Then the last straw was The Crew. What a horrible, glitchy mess that turned out to be. Instead of fixing it they just created The Crew: Wild Run and expected everyone to pay full price again! No apologies, no refunds, no goodwill gestures for wasting $60 on a game that was broken from the start.

FCP looks like FarCry 0.5 because that waterfall in-game says it all. Ubisoft have continually screwed its customers and keeps getting away with it. Warner Bros. did this with Arkham Knight but they actually honored refunds and even gave those affected, all the Arkham games as a goodwill gesture.

Ubisoft did nothing yet they are still allowed to screw gamers over with their rehashed crap.

@jay30mcr: I absolutely loved the crew. Thought it was a fantastic game. Story was terrible but it was a blast to play and the sheer size of the map was something to applaud.

One thing some people fail to mention is that the graphic overhaul ubi did on the crew was released as a free upgrade. They didn't have to do that. They could have just taken everyone's money and said screw everyone but they didn't. They listened to feedback and put a he'll of a lot of time into improving a game that they already had people's money for.

People love blasting ubi, it's just 'not cool' to like them but they make some of the best games I own. Ur entitled to your opinion tho

@peterhorner1867: you seriously think The Crew justified the price tag even with the so-called graphics overhaul? They did take everyone's money and screwed everyone when they released a game of the same name again at full price when they could've done the right thing and maybe released Wild Run as an update or even a DLC because nothing changed apart from the number of games and graphics.

The Crew shouldn't have released in the first place. It was obvious that it wasn't ready. No weather effects was a big letdown for one and the servers constantly crashing. They should've waited and then released Wild Run as the actual The Crew but no, in order to make more money they left you with a broken husk of a game and released what should have been an add-on or DLC.

Actions of a reputable dev or more like an EA move to make more money whilst destroying the companies credibility with customers?

@jay30mcr: I wish more people opened their eyes like you have. Nearly every Ubisoft franchise is based around the same fog of war open world mechanics. Even when playing The Crew it almost feels like you are playing Farcry, Assassins Creed or even Watchdogs. These games quickly bore and dont feel new. Yesterday I started playing some Primal and even though I did have some fun the first hour it quickly became a drag. I even found that I was confronted with mechanics blatantly stolen from other games such as the whole Sense mechanic which is basically ripped from The Witcher. So not only do I now feel like Im playing any of Ubisofts games while playing Primal I now also feel like Im Geralt all over again in a prehistoric setting...

@skippert: I agree with you guys. It's a shame that there's so much overlap with gameplay nowadays. I don't know if developers have just gotten lazy, or we have overplayed games to the point where it doesn't feel new anymore and our expectations exceed what the technology can offer. With that said, there are some games that have the gameplay "just right". For me, those were Bloodborne/Souls series for 3rd person action, for FPS that would be Arma, for isometric RPG that'd be D3. Once you hit that sweet spot in gaming, it's hard to improve the formula, but the expectations still go up.

I've been quite disappointed by Farcry Primal. For a game that has dropped down to 30FPS for the sake of graphics, the graphics are abysmal and distracting. The shadowing is well overdone, and makes it hard to focus on actual events happening. The overall textures are blurry, and poor quality. I would have much preferred the game to look a little worse, for the sake of running at 60FPS.

The game itself, while interesting, lacks a in depth storyline, or anything grabbing about the gameplay that wasn't present in previous far cry games. I won't say that this game is a re-skin of far-cry 4, because that isn't accurate. The game feels like they have tried to make it from scratch, and rehash the title, but have failed to do so, falling into similar patterns as previous games, but the execution is poor. Half of what I enjoyed about the previous games was the variety of weapons, and attachments so that I can play the game how I choose, but this game fails to have an interesting weapon or upgrade system. The character upgrades are repetitive, and don't let you play the game your way, just the way the developers intended.

The game isn't bad, but there is certainly room for improvement that cannot be fixed with patches.

I for one have been enjoying the hell out of this game. I'm glad they decided to mix things up, fighting in the dark and using animals to hunt building a village feels so refreshing for this series. I would honestly like to see them do more things like this in the future.

@Fia1: Well you'd have to play it to know that. A 8/10 looks pretty good. Too bad reviewers don't care about MSRP as much as cheap gamers.

8/10 you don't say...I figured it was going to get a 6/10 taking into account for the last 2-3 weeks each sponsored ad was for FC: Primal...conflict of interest?

FYI - FC4 got a 7/10...I thought that game was brilliant, good characters, decent story, great gameplay, even enjoyed the music....oh ya, and co-op...

I'm wondering if Ubi ever considered to release Far Cry game in 3rd person. Game like Primal, where melee combat seems to be more prevalent, could do well in 3rd person - especially if they'd deepen melee fighting with different attacks, blocks, counters and movement (sidestep, roll etc). Maybe borrow some fighting mechanics from AC, or Witcher, Mad Max... Add some platforming - climbing rocks and trees, doing a bit of Tarzan... add some stealth with crouch and prone... riding animals might look good in 3rd person, as well. And it would refresh franchise a bit, imho.

I think it could work great and prevent such Far Cry feel like a reskin of previous one.

Speaking of which... how would AC game feel in 1st person? With some Dishonored vibe, and Mirror's Edge parkour..?

Or let people switch between 1st and 3rd person..?

I see the Gamespot comments section is still the biggest and best collection of dicks and pretentious douche bags around. Its comforting to know something's never change.

@rasputin177: You mean people being too harsh, or overreacting, or pretending to be superior to others? Were you purposefully being ironic?
