DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition Review

  • First Released Jan 15, 2013
    released
  • PS4
  • XONE

In retrospect.

What a difference a frame rate makes. Say what you will about just how much people actually notice frame rate and resolution, but for games that value split-second timing, those extra 30 frames are essential. It's partly why I spent more time with the hack 'n' slash classic DmC: Devil May Cry on PC than with its slower console counterparts, the sharper visuals and general feeling of superiority being a nice added bonus. So here we are, two years on, and console owners can finally get a taste of that sweet 60fps action, courtesy of the Definitive Edition--and it's a fantastic thing. DmC is fiercely creative, and with its new features in tow, so much better than before.

Oddly, it's the story that's surpassed expectations here (excluding the still dire effort in the included Vergil's Downfall DLC)--not because it was ever bad, but it was always overshadowed by the stellar combat. Playing through it again, though, it's amazing to see just how ambitious and, at times, rather clever, it is. Let's not forget that, as a series, Devil May Cry didn't exactly set the world on fire with its schlocky tales of adolescent fantasy. But with DmC, Ninja Theory crafted a story with depth, (mostly) believable characters, and an ambitious assault on commercialism and modern media. The game's savage satirization of organisations like Fox News with the demonic Bob Barbas' Raptor News Network and Coca-Cola with the bile-infested and thoroughly deadly soft drink Virility is a great touch.

Small plot holes and a few heavy-handed moments of satire aside, DmC's story does a great job of crafting a foreboding atmosphere to back up its balls-to-the-wall action, especially when coupled with the excellent voice acting and effortless dialogue. The demon king Mundus and his mistress Lilith are particular highlights, their ruthless, profanity-filled crusade to enslave humankind being a hackneyed, yet effective way of adding a compelling goal to your hack 'n' slash antics.

DmC throws you from one action set piece to the next at a breakneck pace, only giving you time to stop and think during its tedious (but thankfully short-lived) platforming sections. But even in those sections and through its crumbling blood-red cityscapes, cavernous tunnels lined with a viscous green ooze and searing neon discos, it's hard to ignore DmC's stylistic triumphs. Its colorful, oversaturated look is not only visually stunning in its new 1080p guise but also strangely prescient of the direction that later Xbox One and PlayStation 4 games would take.

While it's hindsight that has made DmC's story more impressive, the already excellent combat has improved by a significant overhaul. Naturally, the move from 30 to 60 frames per second makes for a smoother, more responsive experience. With Dante's trifecta of light, medium, and heavy weapon types in tow, as well as guns for ranged shots, spectacular combos fly off the fingers with less effort than before. That's not to say that things are easier this time around: you still need to put in the effort in practice mode, carefully studying the command list, in order to graduate from simple button mashing. But it's worthwhile, and before long, staccato stabbing motions are replaced with elegant swipes, dodges, and uppercuts that chain together for near-endless combos in the air and on the ground.

60fps is only part of the story. One of the best additions is the optional turbo mode (a nod to Capcom's flagship franchise Street Fighter), which boosts game speed by a substantial 20 percent. It's not for the faint-hearted, but the additional speed makes for some furious and thoroughly enjoyable combat. There's also the optional Hardcore mode--which can be activated on any difficulty level--that rebalances the game. Some of the changes include a tweaked style system that quickly deteriorates, increased enemy damage, adjusted parry and evade windows, and a shorter devil trigger. The differences aren't drastic enough to be immediately noticeable, but soon, levels that might not have tested you in the past become far more difficult to beat. Annoyingly, if you've played through the game before on an older console and have already unlocked the harder difficulty levels, you can't transfer your save and skip, and you’ll have to play through the easier ones again.

Serious masochists can opt to turn on the Must Style modifier, which makes it so that you can't damage enemies until you've achieved an S or higher style ranking by pulling off sweet combos. Stack all the modes and modifiers together (Must Style, Hardcore, and Turbo Mode), then whack the game on the new Gods Must Die difficulty setting where enemies deal 2.5x damage and no items are allowed, and the game turns into a challenge worthy of even the most skilled of hack 'n' slash players. There's also the new Vergil's Bloody Palace mode, which eschews the easier difficulty levels of Dante's Bloody Palace and gives you 60 levels of hardcore arena battles. Veteran Devil May Cry fans can even choose to use manual lock-on throughout, which is a nice touch. Frankly, that level of challenge goes far beyond my own manual dexterity with a controller, even after buying new combos and weapon upgrades, but at least now, no one can cry foul about DmC not being as challenging as its predecessors.

Otherwise, DmC remains largely unchanged, which is no bad thing. The enemies remain neatly animated, drooling and sputtering with a grizzly black ooze as they wander through each level. Their varying attacks mean that you can't just sit back and hammer buttons to win. Some enemies have shields that can only be broken with a heavy weapon, while others need the gentler touch of a fast-paced scythe. Deformed cherubs that fling down explosive bombs are perhaps the most irritating of all of the enemies, but they're integral to maintaining the balance of combat. They also give you a good excuse to yank them down to Earth with a whip of your chain before sending them back to hell with a mighty swing of your axe.

Time has been kind to DmC's boss battles, too. They're still formulaic, making you learn a boss's repetitive movements in order to land an attack, but they're seriously impressive--both visually and narratively. An early encounter with the squishy succubus is a treat--not because of the basic platforming required to defeat her but because of her incredibly foul-mouthed tirades and involuntary neon vomiting. Then there's the battle against a holographic Bob Barbas, a fight that sees you transported to the heart of the Raptor News Network and directly into its live news reports, complete with the requisite TV commentary and helicopter shots. DmC's keen sense of style overcomes much of the boss battles' shortcomings, adding to the heady atmosphere of its brightly coloured world.

I imagine there are still some people out there put off by the direction that Ninja Theory took with DmC who still haven't given the game a shot because it so drastically changed the look of the series. This does the game a huge disservice. DmC in its Definitive Edition form isn't just a lick of paint and a technical upgrade. It's a hardcore twist on already impressive game, making the hack 'n' slash action more difficult, but also more compelling than before. The numerous tweaks and upgrades of DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition have made a game that isn't just a better version of DmC, but a bonafide hack 'n' slash classic.

The Good

  • 60fps makes the already deep combat system even better
  • Ambitious and satirical story
  • Great voice acting
  • New modifiers and modes let you make the game as insanely hard as you like
  • Sharper visuals make the most of DmC's keen sense of style

The Bad

  • Vergil's Downfall DLC isn't as strong as the core game

I can't decide if I should or should not purchase this game. I currently have nothing to play on my PS4, except for Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, which is a puzzle game. I have no interest in The Order or Bloodborne, so I was thinking maybe DMC could be the right game to get while I wait for the release of The Witcher 3, but I never played a DMC before, so I don't know. Anyway, I don't have much time to play at the moment because of college and work, but I wish I had a better game than Lara Croft to play casually during some of my free time. This game is worth buying?

@bloodybonesbr: this is a reboot and you'll be okay if you're into action games, unless you think action games heroes should only use guns. Thankfully you can mix that in this game. And since this is more like a re-boot, this game is really ok for a first in the saga.

@bloodybonesbr: Don't listen to the people who hate (read: not dislike, hate) this game (too many of them hate it religiously, and have been biased since before it was released (I was one of them)), but also don't just run out and buy it because others say you'll have a good time. Try to see if you can get a demo and try it out for yourself. That's what pushed me over the edge.

@bloodybonesbr: I'm not a DmC hater, believe me, but it's just not an amazing game. The review didn't explain how DmC is good, it doesn't present any arguments, so I wouldn't depend on this review. I'd say the original was worth a 6/10, and this one maybe a 7/10 because the dreadful gameplay has been improved. The gameplay of DmC just didn't hold a candle to DMC3 *or* DMC4. Somebody even calculated that DmC has only half the amount of combos DMC4 had (so, very little variety). I could go on and on about all the things wrong with it, but I won't list everything.

Its story's childish, imo, and it contains just as many plotholes as any previous Devil May Cry game. The characters are often either boring or annoying. Kat does nothing but whine and run away, and isn't much of a character, just a plot progresser. Acting's mediocre and sometimes downright bad. Dialogs are ham-fistedly edgy, usually not funny either even though it tries to be, and it's unrealistic.

If you've still got a PS3 or Xbox 360, I recommend the DMC HD Collection. Now, DMC1 and DMC2 are not at all impressive nowadays, I know. What can I say, they're old games and didn't know what they were exactly. DMC1 wasn't even focused on combos, and it was made from scraps of RE4. Its story also isn't too interesting if you don't understand what's going on because you didn't play DMC3 (which is a prequel to it). DMC2 in particular is like that period's version of DmC (mediocre). But DMC3 has stood the test of time very well. It has more combo variety than DmC, more weapons, more likable and over-the-top characters, nice gothic/anime style, and it's challenging. The story is decent enough.

*PS4 game ideas: maybe Battlefield 4 if you play online? Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is coming too, IIRC. Dragonball: Xenoverse is pretty decent too.*

Yes this game is worth it despite the gamers who slam it. It's an excellent addition to the series.

@Divisionbell: hell yeah it is. Liked the first version of this game, and this improvements (specially the fact that they brought back the manual lock, thank god now I'll be able to pull a stinger move) make me want to check this version right away.

@bloodybonesbr: It actually IS a great game that has revitalized a stale series. Naysayers can cry and give their (usually) bs nonsensical reasons as to why they don't like it all they want, don't let it sway you. Its cheap, its fun, its funny, and it was neat to play through. Haven't had that much fun in a DMC game in ages, and I have played and beaten them all and this one is up there on the quality scale.

@creepyburrito@bloodybonesbr: Just checking with you because you say you played all the games. I finished and thoroughly enjoyed DMC 3 (PS 2) so I've gotta ask - As far as gameplay goes, how does this game stack up against DMC 3? Also did you play the original of this or the definitive?

(And for those complaining about story, I don't want to go deep into it but its called a game for a reason, if I had to choose, I'd take gameplay over story any day.)

@Lightsyde@creepyburrito@bloodybonesbr: I actually honestly find this one to be a bit better than 3 due to its tweaks to the flow of combat (camera work, control schemes, and its blending of some elements of older titles)

@creepyburrito@Lightsyde@creepyburrito: I'd love to see a mishmash between the polarity-based combat of DmC and the style of Dante's Awakening. But put it in DmC 2, and let them sleeping dogs lie.

@Lightsyde@creepyburrito@bloodybonesbr: DMC3 is king. I don't think any game will ever topple it, to be frank. But DmC on the PC (I know, right?) came to a really close second for me. The combat was way different, both in good and bad ways, and it did a good job by "removing" (I'd rather say, "fusing") styles from DMC3 to opt for a single, cohesive control scheme. Plus, the controls were actually good, and the camera work was perfect, which is ironic since this was made by Ninja Theory and is a remake of Devil May Cry, both of which are notorious for having abysmal camera work.

@bloodybonesbr: No, it ain't. Don't bother. This review is utter trash and is too scared to actually tackle any legit issues with the damn game, as per usual.

Ah, but a PS4 game you're looking for? Eh... That's tough.

If you want a PS4 game, I may suggest Final Fantasy Type Zero that comes in eight days. That will be one of the few PS4 games worth the purchase, and I tell you this as someone who's played the Japanese version that was patched on the PSP.

It's far better than this, but a landslide. But if you don't like RPGs, then, hey, I've got nothing.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa....WHOA! Great voice acting? Unless they changed the cutscenes all together, voice acting is easily forgettable because of the horrible writing.

I'll admit DmC is a good game, but it's a good hack n' slash game. As a Devil May Cry game, it fell woefully short. I'm more excited for DMC4 SE, and it looks like it will the promised complete package game DMC4 was supposed to be.

I couldn't justify buying this version even for the better frame rate and various other upgrades. Already bought it for my 360 along with the DLC. So pass. I'll wait for DMC: Devil May Cry 2 or DMC 5 which ever comes first.

A very good game indeed ! But dropping 40 bucks for a 2-years old game and its dlc for basically the PC version of said game is something i would never do. Bundle those with DMC4 and its dlc for 30 bucks and i just might reconsider.

Nicely Done Gamespot !!! Gave Order 1886 a 5 with any flaws that the game has and now you give to DMC DEFINITE my ass Edition 9 !!! Why ? Because it runs in 1080p 60fps that my 7 year PC can run flawlessly ! Thats the reason devs continue to serve us with the same old sh1t and we have no new ip's . Way to go GameSpot !

@invalidck: Because a new IP and great graphics don´t make a good game and even if a game is older it can easy have more lasting appeal, better gameplay and a longer, better Campaign then a new one.

@Ash2X: Man i do say that DMC is a super game ! The Definite Edition is overrated in my opinion by Gamespot . We don't need remasters of our old games in Ps3/Xbox360 unless they have something new to offer us . We need new ip's for our next gen consoles that are lacking quantity and quality . And i definitely disagree that 1886 is a PASS . 5/10 .

@invalidck@Ash2X: But you also say:

"The whole point is that when you give a new IP with excellent graphics , controls and soundtrack a 5 you missleading the audience to pass the game . Is like you telling people that the game is NOT worth playing at all !

And when devs give us, for god sake ANOTHER remaster... 9/10 !!! Yeah encourage them to remaster every ps3 / xbox360 game is the next gen . As if we have plenty of games for ps4/xone ...

Pathetic ..."
Which actually means People shouldn´t pass a worse game which is plain stupid. The Order is not worth playing and definetly not woth 70€/$-

DMC may be a Remaster, but it has also improved Gameplay...so why shouldn´t it get rated higher then before?Just because it is a Remaster of a 2 Years old Game?

It´s not like Remasters come instead of new IPs - they come to make money for new Games.DMC came without any kind of chance to the then downfalling Sales-Market and failed, It´s not like a "TLoU" which was successful before and not transfered well to the new Generation.

@Ash2X@invalidck: I get your point . I partially agree with you. But you justify 5/10 for 1886 ?

And for this crappy remaster of a good (not excellent game) 9/10 ?

So you guys saying that 1886 is such a bad game overall as Tiny Brains 5/10 , The Last Tinker 5/10 UFC 5/10 Contrast 5/10 etc and hang on ..

Worst than garbage like Alien :Isolation 6/10 Thief 6/10 , Costume Quest 2 etc

OMG as i'm writing this a get more and more frustrated .

On the other hand Destiny gets 6/10 Driveclub 5/10 Far cry 4 7/10

BUT DMC Definite-nothing-new-but-1080p-60fps gets 9/10

This is a JOKE !

@invalidck: Actually agree with that.

The 1886 is basically a movie that plays itself and sometimes tells you to press this and that.

Whereas you ACTUALLY have to PLAY this game.

PLAY as in think your movements, decide the better tactic, and properly execute while avoiding the hazards.

It's just routine nonsense, and without those optional hardcore modes that have been released, you get an awful Hack and Slash game where you have to hit the enemy but 3 times with your axe to get SSS!

@invalidck@BehemothBlade: It may be a new IP, but branding doesn't change the fact that it's still the same crap we've already played a billion times last gen.

Or the fact that the game is ridiculously short and sets itself up for a sequel with no replay value.

Or the fact that the only two bosses in the game are the same QTE sequence, twice.

Or the fact that the AI is terrible, AI being the reason devs were claiming they "needed next gen tech to make fresh, new games."

Let's face it, it just wasn't any good by any stretch except presentation, and even then, the story apparently had too many plot holes to be engaging. :/

There's no way you can be this stupid. So you're saying The Order should get a pass because it's a new IP with good graphics and a good soundtrack?? Really as if that's all you'd need to have an excellent game. Also yes, that's exactly what they're telling people, avoid The Order because it's a bad game not anywhere close to being worth $60. As far as DmC getting a 9 well the original was already pretty good and this just makes it better so nothing wrong with that at all and who wouldn't want more remasters?? Here's an idea, if you don't want to play them, well then don't....

You are telling me that if someone gave you 1886 for free you will PASS it ? On the other hand i've played DMC and YES it was a great game ! But if someone give me DEFINITE EDITION for free, YES i will PASS IT. I just don't have the time to play the same game with nothing new to offer - just because it runs in 1080p 60fps. ? According to Gamespot this thing is better than DMC4.

Can anybody give one reason how this thing does ANYTHING better than DMC4 OTHER THAN HERPDERP BACKTRACKING DERP?

@jlenoconel: I know, right? The hilarious thing was that it was demons saying those sexual references. You're really going to censor demons, of all things? Get out of here forever.

@chaotic_eden@jlenoconel: Its censoring dialogue from a game, that's the point.

So we know Marc really loves hack n' slash, twitch style action games. But this does look better running in 1080p at 60 FPS.

Still don't want... I've already experienced the amazing pretentious and agonizing plot. If I ever buy this game, it would be on Steam Sale for 4 Dollars.

@megamatics: I distinctly remember 1 - 4 being completely atrocious in the storytelling department...

@bannermanner@megamatics: That argument makes no sense. Consider that this game wanted to have a good plot and none of the other Devil May ry Games didn't care about the plot. The plot of a game that actually cared about writing a story, is somehow justified by being compared to games that didn't care about it ? Don't make me laugh.

You were actually interested in a DMC plot to begin with...

You forgot to mention the soundtrack of the game , one of its best aspects.

@sdesyllas: The best parts were how they were actually remixed to tie in with your combat. The Overwatch level where the song actually plays the end riff when you defeat all the enemies in slow motion was epic.

Ninja Theory's Tameem: "this game will "feel like 60fps" at 30fps. Also, manual lock on is not needed"

2 years later:

"okay we lied, here's your 60fps version with manual lock on"

@JustPlainLucas: Hey, go for it. Check for a demo if you can. It's definitely not as bad as people make it out to be.

I think this genre is okay and all, but I feel like Mark likes it a little bit too much. With this as a 9 and bayonetta 2 as a 10 (which didn't even get GOTY for the Wii U)
