A New Monarchy.

The Taken King is more than just an expansion; it's also a heart transplant. And with its wounds sewn shut, the anesthetic wearing off, and the scalpels put away to dry, Destiny has pulled through the operation with renewed vigor and a much stronger pulse. Now, only a few scars remain.

Destiny's first year was a collage of peaks and valleys as Bungie released two expansions to its sci-fi multiplayer title. At its best, Destiny comprised a shooter with pristine controls and clever cooperative play. But at its worst, Destiny disrespected my time. To me, the first year of Destiny felt empty. Its gorgeous worlds held promise, but lacked much of a soul. I frequented those static environments because no matter how boring they might have felt, they contained the slim promise of better loot. I continued long past the point of actually having fun.

Now Playing: Destiny: The Taken King - Video Review

Destiny's newest strikes are among its most creative.
Destiny's newest strikes are among its most creative.

But The Taken King changes things. Now, my time is better spent. Bungie revamped the Light, loot, and experience systems to be more accessible, and provide a more rewarding overall experience. Light is no longer tied to specific armor pieces, but just an average of your gear's overall value. Raising it is necessary for difficult missions, but when it comes to your rank, you can reach the level 40 cap through experience alone. And now that loot scales with your level, the promise of better gear is always on the horizon, encouraging constant improvement and rewarding results.

By decoupling Light and character level, Destiny allows you to play however you want, regardless of which missions you want to play, or how often you want to play them. In Destiny's first year, only certain events were worth pursuing for better gear. But now, much of the loot is out there, somewhere in the solar system, waiting for you to stumble upon it. You can fight through cooperative strikes, explore Mars, or turn in bounties for added experience. You can summon a plethora of challenging bosses in the Court of Oryx, a public event area teeming with Guardians in search of gear.

The Dreadnaught itself, an abandoned ship in the rings of Saturn, is full of secrets, hidden items, quest chains and more. It's an area worth exploring, and sets the stage for The Taken King's exceptional narrative.

Nathan Fillion's Cayde-6 delivers a phenomenal performance.
Nathan Fillion's Cayde-6 delivers a phenomenal performance.

The new story missions follow our Guardians in their fight against Oryx, the Hive king whose looming shadow has darkened things since we killed his son in The Dark Below expansion. These story missions are coherent, providing much needed context to the quests our Guardians embark upon. I always knew the mission objective, and always felt the pull of that final battle with The Taken King at the end of the road.

There's also more character here. The vanguard leaders are more than talking mannequins now, with personalities, motivations, and fears of their own. Nolan North delivers a stellar performance as your Ghost, but its Cayde-6, the Hunter leader, who stands out. Voiced by Nathan Fillion, his sarcasm and sardonic wit are just facades. They slowly give way to doubt and remorse when he learns of a friend's death. For the first time, Destiny transcends archetypes, and shows signs of humanity in its storytelling. It's ironic then, that Cayde-6 isn't human.

Fighting through these story missions is more varied than ever before. It's not just endless shooting at cookie cutter enemies. The Taken are ghostlike clones of Destiny's other enemy factions, which Oryx has absorbed into his own army, creating a force with a wide array of abilities and attacks. Fallen captains blind you, Cabal scions split into triplets, and Vex goblins shield their allies, forcing you to aim for one specific grunt at a time. Destiny's combat is more dynamic now, and more versatile than the skirmishes of its first year.

Strike bosses in The Taken King follow suit, and require teamwork and tactics to defeat. Among the best is The Restorative Mind. This Vex boss hidden in the depths of Venus is more than just a bullet sponge, and constant motion is the only way to lower its defenses. You'll need to drain its shield, protect your teammates, and fight through clusters of Vex in a ring-shaped arena. All of this is done on the AI's terms, though, as the boss rotates an impassable force field around the room, dictating the flow of combat and forcing snap decisions.

The Taken King transcends archetypes, and shows signs of humanity in its storytelling.

Bungie added even more variety to combat with the new subclasses, which change how I approach certain situations. Take my Hunter's Nightstalker option, for instance. By firing my bow into a cluster of enemies, I tether them together, marking a prime target for my Titan friend's Hammer of Sol, or the Warlock's chain lightning. It also makes every shot a critical hit, so using it at the right moment, on the right enemies, is part of the decision process. The subclasses don't just open new possibilities for character loadouts, but also encourage experimentation in cooperative matches.

The same rings true in the Crucible, Destiny's PvP arena. The subclasses aren't as balanced here--I reverted back to my Hunter's Golden Gun when the new subclass failed to produce--but they still alter the flow of combat on each new map. And these are among Bungie's best arenas, with varied sightlines and verticalities, offering hectic clash points amid the firefights. Once again, the developer has proven its prowess with multiplayer level design.

And when you've gathered enough powerful gear, equipped your best weapons, and tailored your subclass to cooperative perfection, there's the new raid. It's called King's Fall, and it's the most expansive in Destiny to date. It begins on a sour note, with ill-advised first-person platforming that appears farther in as well. But everything else gathers speed. The checkpoints all require careful teamwork, and the bosses are some of the most creative Bungie has ever designed.

Golgoroth is a prime example. On our tenth try, when muscle memory guided us through the fight's necessary tactics, this hulking ogre had a sliver of health left. We were almost through. And the moment before he died, when all six of us threw caution to the wind and unloaded everything we had, despite the Taken minions surrounding us--this is Destiny at its finest. Careful planning gave way to satisfying victory. And I don't want to spoil too much about the trek's latter stages, but its final boss, both in size and scope, is colossal. He's a fitting end to Destiny's most dynamic raid yet.

The Hunter's Nightstalker subclass creates useful tethers for cooperative situations.
The Hunter's Nightstalker subclass creates useful tethers for cooperative situations.

But despite all of the improvements to Destiny's systems, all of the new content in place with The Taken King, and all of the heart that's gone into its compelling storyline, remnants of Destiny's hollow past still endure.

After 16 hours with the expansion, the grind began. At first, I didn't mind. The Taken King excels by granting you gear through hard work rather than luck. But I played the same strikes five times over, day in and day out. I trudged through the Dreadnaught for hours on end. I completed similar bounties throughout the week, and didn't see many variations throughout 35 hours with The Taken King.

The king himself.
The king himself.

For a game that requires so much grinding, it still doesn't have the breadth of content to support the repetition required. The promise of better loot is the driving force, but the journey there is taxing. Quests are interesting only for a time, until they once again become long lists of cloying chores.

But The Taken King still deserves ample praise. It not only grants us new content, but reinvigorates a game that needed new life. In one of The Taken King's early story missions, you'll come across the remains of Destiny's first strike boss. He's right where you left him, surrounded by his own robotic innards, the life long gone from his dormant shell.

"Remember when Sepiks Prime was our biggest problem?" Ghost asks us. And like the Guardians who killed that boss, Destiny has since moved on. There are still traces of its mediocre first year, but it's now more vital, and more promising, and it has left much of its past behind.

The Good

  • Excellent story, with outstanding voice acting, characterization, and cutscenes
  • Varied enemies result in more dynamic combat
  • New progression systems create a consistently rewarding experience
  • Quest log contains numerous paths to follow between strikes and story content

The Bad

  • Game becomes repetitive after 15 hours, and not much variety to support the late-game grind
  • Many quests are still taxing, with chore lists and boring objectives to complete

About the Author

Mike's hunter reached level 40 within 15 minutes of starting The Taken King. 35 hours later, he's now at Light level 296.

The only problem with this expansion is how they're forcing you to purchase the first 2 mediocre dlc's if you want to buy the expansion for $40. If this wasn't the case, it'd be an acceptable deal. But i still think for what's offered, $30 for TTK would've made more sense.

@silversix_: if you have the original copy you can go to gamestop and trade it in and pay 36 bucks for all 3 expanisons. If you already bought them then you still pay 36 bucks with a trade in.

@silversix_: Should have been $40 for all 3. I'd love to jump back in but, since I already own the game, I shouldn't be required to pay another $80 in Canada just to play the latest update. $40 to get up to speed would have been more palatable. Reaper of Souls cost less than the 3 Destiny DLC and only TTK is content rich. And that game has a crapton of free updates and content all the time.

Yeah, the prices are ridiculous in canada. 79.99+taxes=$91 for this shit... Not to mention how garbage and worthless the first dlc's were, but you're still forced to buying them both because otherwise you're unable to purchase the expansion separately.

No worries...... half the negative comments come from people that never played the game at all. Don't let some 12 year old trolls make you feel apologetic over something you enjoy.

Destiny was only xb1 game I sold since I got the console at launch. This does sound like an improvement. But one thing I don't like is someone like me who wants to play alone can't see all the game has to offer. Especially since Bungie won't let you matchmaker for raids. The off times I play with friends it won't be this game, let alone 5 or 6 at once.

@immortality20: I feel the same. The crappy story and grind didn't bother me (especially as they added content), but being held back because we can't party up and play the biggest hardest and most fun parts of the game is dumb.

@Smaug317: No what is dumb is trying to randomly partner up with 5 people, who 5 of which might not even have mics for crying out loud, with no prior experience to work together on a raid of the magnitude. If this is even a 10th as hard as v.o.g. than it won't hurt to go to a website and partner up with people, stop being lazy this isn't call of duty.

@Tiger_Ali: There is still no reason why there isn't an option. Some people play the game long enough but, don't have enough friends on at the same time to run the raids. MM should be in every part of the game. Since there is very little social structure in the game to begin with.

@ltjohnnyrico: Again. It has nothing to do with trying to find a group. There is no reason in this day and age that Raids should not have Match Making. The Raids in this game are not even that hard. Some have communication issues but, that can happen in any group.

@Tiger_Ali: The raid is for the hardcore audience strikes are for most people. They should have guilds or something. I have gotten a few invites to do random stuff but for the most part I play alone. Because its console you don't have chat lines and cant advertise what you want to do. None of my friends on xbox live play destiny.. so it definitely takes some work if you want to raid. I'm not hardcore on Destiny.

@Shunten: For a sci-fi shooter, the story in The Taken King isn't bad. I mean, it's not Bioshock, but it's as good as something like Halo or Gears. Or Diablo or Borderlands, since Destiny is a loot game. A hell of a lot better than any previous Destiny story.

@Shunten: You have to understand, many people these days (perhaps this reviewer included) were never actually exposed to "excellent stories" in video games, or if they were, they gravitated toward simpler, more recycled stories growing up, so that is their frame of reference for using the very flexible word "excellent."

You have to ask: did this reviewer play Planescape: Torment? Did this reviewer play KotOR? Hell, let's throw him an easy one; did this reviewer play The Last of Us? Yes on any of those? THEN HOW CAN HE POSSIBLY CALL TTK's STORY EXCELLENT?!?!

So, he might have an excuse -- like maybe he just needs to be less hyperbolic and reserve some of his vocabulary for when it really counts. But on the whole, I would tend to agree with you: I'm sorry, what?

@spikepigeo: Yeah, KotOR II had a great story and all, but you aren't going to compare the story of a loot shooter to the story of one of the better written RPGs ever. There's no expectation of Obsidian's level of writing and story telling in a game not designed for it. I mean, how much of KotOR II, or Torment, or Baldur's Gate, or New Vegas was devoted to walking around, just talking to characters and reading?

KotOR II and Torment both have much better stories than anything in Destiny, the same way Destiny has much better graphics than KotOR II or Torment, but no review of them is going to say they're ass ugly.

@Mogan: Yeah, but the difference is that graphics, specially 3d graphics age much faster than a good story. And here's the thing too, Homeworld and Myth are both RTSs which have great stories compared to most of the best RPGs, with less control of course since they're linear, my point is, genre is not an excuse, System Shock 2 or Deus Ex both had great stories and were FPSs.

@RogerioFM: I didn't say FPS games have bad stories, I said you shouldn't call the story in a 4 hour loot shooter expansion bad just because there's a better one in a 100 hour RPG. If you take every element out of context and just compare it to the example you've liked the best, then saying any part of almost any game is good would be laughable. I mean, Myth's story isn't any more in depth than Destiny's but I'm not scoffing at you liking it because it was pretty darn good for an RTS I bought because it was the first one to have a 3D map.

@Mogan: Actually, I did think it was very in depth lol, the story was amazing on that game. But I guess, it's all about taste. And I have to agree we can't compare a 4 hours expansion with an 40 hours rpg. Yet, Neverwinter nights had expansions and they had much better story than any Destiny game, even better than the NWN base game. Anyway, how could you not like Myth's story?

@RogerioFM: I did like Myth's story, but it didn't have the depth or development of something like Torment or KotOR (it didn't have the time). And the expansions for Neverwinter Nights (which had a crap story, for an RPG) were all as long or longer than the campaign in their main game, and had plenty of time to develop their characters and plotlines.

The Taken King has a few hours to do what it's got to do, and story isn't the primary focus. Still, for a loot game, it does pretty darn well.

@RogerioFM: I sat there and watched my friend play it while we made snarky comments and generally (probably) sounded like pretentious douchebags. I will admit that.

But I will also (shamelessly) admit that I am a huge story snob with my games. Even when I played The Last of Us I was hard pressed to call it "amazing" or anything close. It was good. It did the job. It had good characters.

So, now that you know that context, yes my friend and I found the story laughable. More like a cute attempt by Bungie to make up for their previous shortcomings by throwing out all sorts of "revenge" motive cliches and tired old character archetypes, among other things.

BUT if your frame of reference isn't story on the whole, but rather storytelling within the world of Destiny (not a high bar) then you'll be pleasantly surprised. Why? Because TTK actually has a story. Not a good one, just.... one at all.

@spikepigeo: Don't worry, I'm a pretentious d-bag when it comes to story too and damn proud of it, I value story almost above everything else. Planescape Torment is my favorite game of all time due to it's story, I forced myself to learn English so I could understand everything. And all my top 10 games are there because of it's story(Legacy of Kain series, Homeworld, Longest Journey, Deus Ex, Thief, Myth, Kotor 2, Azrael's Tear).

Poor bungie, how they have fallen since their Myth days, now back THEN they could write, even if the story was a retelling of a Black Company story lol.

@RogerioFM: fantastic list. I definitely don't need to tell you what a good story is. What I can tell you is that if your palate has become accustomed to even a couple of those games then you will find TTK to be far below "excellent". So then all that's left is your gameplay preference. Which many like the grind and the MMO style mechanics are certainly improved. Still not my kind of game at all.

There is still little to no reason for me to get this game. All I see is the word 'grind' over and over. I see that word when this game is being described more than any MMO, ever.

I'll just wait for a real Halo with a real story and the only grind being the never boring MP. All of that in a single game without brutal DLC and their definitely of 2 hour 'expansions'.

Bungie was once a company and a name that demanded respect. Now it's nothing but a confusing joke to most people. Including the new gamer that they are trying to win over. I don't think people consider them 'Bungie' anymore.

$60 for 15 hr worth of solid gameplay. Or... You could get Metal Gear Solid The Phantom Pain for the same price, and get a solid 50-60 hrs of it... True multiplayer isn't fully released yet, but the game is much better than the fridge/microwave this is.

i'm at well over 30 and still haven't finished the main Taken War questline, not to mention an completely new arsenal, new areas, 30% more map space in the dreadnaught, new mp maps/ modes etc.

@timoteo2k1: I

was quoting the reviewer on strictly the story missions. Trust me when I say don't even bother trying to open the metaphical Pandora's Box that is contained within MGS5:FP ... Snake does pop out of it though :p .

I am certainly not saying that you suck at Destiny. I would only say something like that in a joke, but I am 110% serious when it comes to this comment. I am just saying that I would like to have the story more filled out, and an even longer campaign.

Sure they make it easy enough for new people to pick it up and play. That is a good thing when you release a stand-alone DLC Expansion pack for a game (COUGH GAME COUGH...). The real problem is that it craps (there are better choice words to use for this :(... ) on every Destiny player who put in the countless repetitive hours (in # of weeks) grinding away only to have an expansion (COUGH NEW..GAAAMME COGH HAAACK UGH...) make the old game become a piece of TP to wipe their butt with.

And unfortunately they probably have swamp ass from being so pissed off about newbies being able to pre-order the expansion (oooOoough GAME I give up), giving newbies better equipment than some Destiny players who have genuinely put a lot of time and effort into the game, but haven't obtained equipment that is equally important or better than what's in the pre-order. But these same players have to shell out a good chunk of change in order to keep playing the game with the same number of people, and it's the only way to keep progressing through the single "game". Because why why would you need an expansion to beat the game. Like for example, you revisit characters you previously destroyed. You were powerful enough before. ..

It's okay to say that it's a "New Game ", where you import your previous character. JUST BE UPFRONT AND HONEST ABOUT IT FOR YOUR SAKE!

Sorry for the huge rant, but there was a serious injustice that just occurred under a lot of people's noses. And unfortunately they had to bend over and take it after smelling the poo that was flung at them by the greedy apes at Bungie .. Sorry Destiny players I feel bad for you. I hope this is the last purchase of the Destiny series you make.

AND DAMNIT I LOVED HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED. WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU GUYS! THE GREED GOT TO YOU!!! STOP THIS MADNESS BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

From a dear and concerned customer from the mid 2000 who loved Halo 1. It really was the best thing since sliced bread after Unreal Tournament was released :). Respond back please. ...

@jb34304:
--ps+ members could get TTK for 35$(i think it may be back to 39.99$)
--while ill agree MGSV is a better 'story' than TTK(and single player experience)
--i think TTK is worth 35$
--it has SOLID FPS shooting mechanics
--and TONS of freaking content
--it is like a co-op MP RPG FPS playground

@jb34304: And both have equally shitty stories, so yeah, gameplay wise, just go with MGSV.

Putting my faith in D00M for FPS enjoyment. Never tried Destiny and from reading this it seems I'm not missing much.

I personally play mechanically deep >RPGs< for looting and grinding. In a run-an-gun multiplayer shooter? It's boring. But hey, that's my opinion. This seems the sort of game Borderland fans would enjoy.

@RSM-HQ: While I do enjoy TTK, I still hold much higher thought of Borderlands. Its humor and interesting weapons still outshine Destiny in my personal opinion.
