Dell Magazines Crossword Review

Network access to puzzles makes this whole crosswording-on-your-phone thing worthwhile.

There are two crossword games on Sprint right now, TV Guide Crosswords2Go volume 2 and Dell Magazines Crosswords. Of the two, there is no contest. Dude, you are getting the Dell.

The TV Guide brand isn't enough to make up for the game's hapless interface. When (if) you play, you will very likely feel frustrated with the clunky interface. In any of the several ways to view your current puzzle, the screen is crowded and unnecessarily confusing.

Dell Magazine Crossword by Blue Lava Wireless, on the other hand, is pleasant just to look at. Playing it is even better. You must triple tap (select letters by hitting the appropriate number key a certain number of times) in both titles, but in Dell, the text area is clear and simple to navigate. Dell's gameplay is further facilitated by what must be one of the only innovations in crossword puzzles in the last 50 years--Blue Lava has done away with the line numbers. Not done away with entirely, actually--you can toggle them on, but they are useless in this mobile version and it's great to be able to banish them.

Another innovation in Blue Lava's game--it actually uses the network to feed your puzzle addiction. Rather than bundling 15 crosswords into the download (the TV Guide approach), the Dell version gives you access to an enormous online library. So besides the portability and the joys of not having to wear out erasers with incorrect answers, network access to puzzles makes this whole crosswording-on-your-phone thing worthwhile.

There are only two things these two downloads have in common...their newspaper precedent and their price. If you have ever yearned for a crossword and couldn't find one, spend your $2.99 on the Dell Magazine game by Blue Lava.
