Anthem Review - Two Halves

  • First Released Feb 15, 2019

Stronger alone.

Launching upward off a jungle floor and bursting through a thick canopy of trees, bobbing and weaving your way under a waterfall as you take in the lush landscape below you, is one of the highlights of Anthem. Flight, in these moments, is freeing, serene and exhilarating all at once. But you will eventually have to come back down to earth. When you don't have a means to cool down in the air, you have to interrupt your flight to cool off on the ground--or else your suit will overheat and send you careening downward much more violently. This is what Anthem is like as a whole: a game where promising moments are bookended by frustration, where good ideas are undone before they can be fully realized.

It can take a while to warm up to Anthem in the first place. In its intro mission, you are a rookie Freelancer--a hero type who battles threats to humanity in mechanized combat suits called javelins. But that brief mission ends in failure, and after a two-year time skip, you're now an experienced Freelancer. As a result, everyone talks to you as if you know everything about the world, even though much of the game's space-fantasy jargon is explained only in codex entries. "Shapers," "Arcanists," to "silence" this or that "relic"--all the dialogue is structured as if you already know what all these things are, so there's not even an element of mystery to it. It's just hard to follow.

Now Playing: Anthem Quick Video Review

The story and overall worldbuilding do a great disservice to the characters, which have elements of what you might think of as BioWare's pedigree. The main cast is well-acted and genuine, with complicated emotions and motivations that might have been interesting had they been given time to grow. Two characters are mad at you for the events of the tutorial, even though it's never quite clear why; that bad blood spills over into your relationship with your current partner-in-Freelancing, Owen, and there's enough believable awkwardness there to make you almost feel bad for him. But because the narrative is so poorly set up, the drama feels unearned, the "emotional" reveals robbed of their impact, and any connection you might have had to the characters just out of reach.

Exacerbating all of this is Anthem's loot game core, which is simple on paper. After every mission, you return to your base of operations, Fort Tarsis, to talk to people, get new missions, and tinker with your javelins using the loot you picked up from the previous mission. Missions themselves almost universally involve some quick narrative setup followed by flying, completing routine tasks, and plenty of combat (with more brief plot-related stuff thrown in via radio chatter).

But this general structure doesn't work well in practice. You're told up front that playing Anthem with others is the best way to play and that you'll get better rewards in a group, but this means asking your friends to be quiet every few minutes so you can hear a bit of dialogue or to wait patiently while you tweak your loadout. Playing solo is better if you want to take your time and talk to different characters, but doing so can make missions more difficult or tedious. Matchmaking with random people is the best option, since you'll have people with you for grindy parts but will leave you alone for the story--but even then, it's easy to lose track of what's going on, especially if someone in your team is ahead of you and triggering dialogue early.

And no matter what, you'll have to return to Fort Tarsis after each expedition, which makes for choppy pacing in both the story and the gameplay. There's no way to change your loadout on the go and no way to just continue on to another mission right away, and there are currently a number of loading screens in between leaving and returning to Fort Tarsis. It's hard to really get into any kind of flow.

No Caption Provided

When I finally took the time to talk to NPCs in between missions, I found endearing characters and brief but interesting bits of story spread between them. There's one girl who just loves animals no matter how dangerous, and she'll happily tell you all about them; there's the oldest man in Fort Tarsis, who admits to doing some shady things to earn that title; there's an old woman whose daughter has been missing for years and might just need some kindness. Though it took some patience to do it, I was glad I stopped to listen to them.

Throughout all of this, combat is the main thing keeping Anthem afloat. There are four types of javelins--Ranger, Storm, Interceptor, and Colossus--that are essentially a soldier, mage, assassin, and tank, respectively. Each plays differently, with a different pool of abilities, and you aren't locked into the one you start with; you unlock them as you level up. That, combined with a handful of new weapons and abilities after each mission, means that you're almost always experimenting with new loadouts and playstyles.

I initially picked the Ranger, thinking it would be a good all-around class while I was learning the basics. But the guns alone aren't enough to make Anthem combat's exciting; I found a lot of the weapons, especially shotguns, to feel ineffectual. The Ranger's abilities are pretty straightforward, too--you get grenades and missiles and the like--which left me largely unimpressed with combat in the beginning. But then I unlocked the speedy Interceptor, whose gymnastic jumps and swift melee strikes are incredibly satisfying, and I started to get excited about trying new things in each successive mission.

No Caption Provided

The Storm javelin became my favorite, though, because it both has interesting elemental abilities and can hover for minutes, not seconds, at a time before overheating. Its assortment of powers lends itself well to getting combos, which result in a satisfying explosion of sorts and a more chaotic battlefield. But more importantly, it's the only javelin that doesn't require frequent stops on the ground, and as a result it provides the most dynamic combat--you can go from shooting basic enemies in a hallway to floating above the battlefield, raining down lightning to wipe out five at once while scoping out the area for your team.

Generally, all of the javelins can easily jet out of sticky situations in a pinch or briefly hover in the air to gain the upper hand, and combining movement with your abilities is consistently a good time. But when fighting titans and certain other bosses, there's a catch; a lot of them use fire attacks that overheat your suit and ground you instantly, robbing the fight of much of what makes combat interesting. You can still use your abilities, but they don't do much in these fights, and they fall flat compared to the often bombastic impact they have on regular enemies. This extends to the final fight, which is especially underwhelming.

The endgame thus far is to complete high numbers of the various mission types, which amounts to repeating many individual missions. The draw is better gear, but without compelling high-level fights, you don't have anything to build toward with all that grinding. A post-credits cutscene has the most intriguing plot point in the game and serves as a preview of what might come later on--but right now it's just a promise, rather than a true incentive to keep going.

It's worth noting that the early access period saw a number of technical hiccups. Dropped audio, server issues, long loading times, missions not registering as complete--I didn't have a single session without some sort of problem. A day-one patch aims to iron much of this out, but overall, the poor structure and pacing are a more frustrating problem. [Editor's note: We have now tried Anthem on PS4 Pro, Xbox One, and Xbox One X. The Pro and X versions generally run decently, with some technical hiccups and occasional frame rate drops, while we encountered more stuttering and strain on the standard Xbox One.]

Anthem has good ideas, but it struggles significantly with the execution. It's a co-op game that works best with no one talking; it buries genuinely interesting character moments and puts its most incomprehensible story bits at the forefront; its combat is exciting until you get to the boss fights and find your wings have been clipped. Even the simple, exhilarating act of flying is frequently interrupted by the limitations of your javelin, and you never quite shake that feeling of disappointment--of knowing, throughout the good parts of Anthem, that you'll inevitably come crashing back down.

The Good

  • Flying is exhilarating, and the views are beautiful
  • Experimenting with new loadouts each mission keeps combat fun and satisfying
  • Some side characters and their stories are endearing and interesting

The Bad

  • You're frequently forced to land or stay on the ground
  • The main story is incredibly difficult to follow
  • Playing with others causes pacing issues, while playing solo can be tedious
  • Boss fights are underwhelming and lack the excitement found in other combat situations

@chisoxrule: One can only hope that the colossal failure of Anthem's launch plagued by technical issues, even after 5 years of development, would turn Bioware back to single player adventure games. Sadly, there's just not much money to be made in single player games without all the micro-transactions found in the multi-player games. $50 for a Colossus skin in Anthem? No, EA! Bad!

For the first time in my life, I am going to defend a Bioware game. I didn't much care for the demo, but it at least had everything destiny 2 (a game I hated) has - and promised more. I was reluctant to buy anthem, after playing the demo mind you, but I decided to pick up the origins premier access and give it a go. I... am really enjoying it now that I get to meet people and collect everything. The separate sections feel good. I like having a quiet hub area to bum around in, manage stuff, and do story quests. I like the loops it sets up. It all adds the charm that the demo was missing.

I played the demo and sort of viewed this as a LoL game. It seemed to be ok, but nothing special. With expectations this low I won't be disappointed when I play the whole game.

So it's even worse than I thought it would, Bioware needs to stick to single player RPGs and take their time developing games. This games as a service bs helps no one.

Ok a few things about the reviewer here and I agree with xxmavr1kxx comments, he hit it right on the nail. 1- she said you can't flight basically for long periods, not true. If you nose dive, fly through a waterfall or near water it cools down your javalian and extends flight. 2- what is she talking about playing with friends as she puts, seems like a chore and playing with randoms is better? You can easily communicate with friends and take it slow.playomg with randoms they are always going ahead of you racing through the missions not giving you time to explore. I haven't played the full game but I have played the vip and open beta and I can confirm the gameplay is really fun, but some people are having a problem following with the story. But I really think it's due to the laggy cutscenes that are being fixed with day 1 patch. It's to be seen how the end game content will hold up and if it does I really think this will be the destiny Slayer everybody was hoping for.

BINGO !!! I said this game is utmost a 6/10 and I was right.

It's not for everyone... certainly NOT me. I didn't like the Destiny games (tried hard to get into them). And this one is pretty much Destiny with a different skin. Although, I must admit Bioware have potential to improve things with subsequent patches and content in the coming months.

But this is a fair review. Many sites are giving this an average of 6.5 which is okay I guess. But this is EA's game and there is nothing Bioware about it.

I will wait until the next Dragon Age game - The Dread Wolf Returns !!

@Sound_Demon: Its reviews like those that I do not pay any attention too. Anyone thats being that critical of a game is worthless and should not be reviewing game.s They are being Asshats about it and clearly dont know what they are talking about. Yes Anthem has issues, but not as bad as they are trying to make it out as. The game has a lot of potential and is a far better game then most others. Especially The grind infestation Destiny is.

@darks88: Wrong, games scores SHOULD NEVER be based on their "potential", they need to be scored according to their current state. And the fact is, Anthem is riddled with techincal problems, bland story, repetitive combat. horribly long lading screens, uninspired enemy design, and full of microtransactions.

Reviews are objetive analysis of a product based on its "practical functionality". NOT the amount of subjetive fun you have with it. that's the difference between a review and an opinion.

@darks88: Hey man, no offense in anyway but i wanted to say out my thoughts. Reviews like those, you won't pay attention? Come on, some of the reviewers have good points. They too criticized destiny for what it was.

Reviewers needed to review for what it is now, but not what it will be. Skill up would normally review the game again after new updates have been implemented. Just like division.

I played Anthem demo, i liked explosion effects, the visual, the coolness of the javelin, presentation is cool, sound effects and the color customization but issues are there, especially the loading part. I believed it is the same as Destiny where starting of the game feels great but after finishing the campaign, everything is nothing but grindfest. Just like what you said.

1 thing i do agree with you, I noticed a lot of them use this "do not buy this game" sentence. Giving out your opinion, and let the consumer decide in the end. Possibility i pay for the origin access and try this game for a month after they patched it up.

Oh yeah, during demo, i felt that the shooting part, destiny felt more.... enjoyable than Anthem does. It seems based on the review, the full game still remains the same.

@Sound_Demon: 4 is a touch too harsh. This is an average loot shooter. Nothing more or less. But it's worth checking out if you liked Destiny cause I think this is a better game than the first Destiny.

Playing the Anthem Beta made me want to go play Destiny 2, but I didn't buy the latest content, so it's not worth me doing that either. I am not surprised Anthem has a 6, as I was guessing it was only going to get about 7. The beta was okay, but I wasn't desperate to continue playing when it was over.

I agree with long loads, but just like her pre-review I am still not getting how she is having a problem following the story. Unless she skipped over large talking sections int he beginning (she stated at one point in the review when I started to stop and talk to the NPC's).

In her pre-review she didnt understand why people hate free lancers now, but this was explained in a cut scene right around level 3/4.

In this review she doesnt know why the 2 old team members were mad, but during the tutorial, the two members that are mad at you are there, and they are pissed at the decision you are making at the end. And when you talk to those 2 members years later, it is brought up multiple times.

Also with flight, you extend flying times by cooling the suit of with water. You could fly non stop if you are gliding over the top of a stream catching its mist, or if you are flying by water sources like a water full for a quick cool down. You also have mods that you can attach to extend flying time and lesson chances of overheating.

The game isnt perfect, and the many loading screen sucks, but it isnt a 6 in todays standards. 7.5 I would say.

@xxmavr1kxx: I totally agree with you, this review has some flaws that are either not true or she has not explored the game enough. Also her opinon on playing with friends is difficult and playing with randoms is better, blows my mind. Randoms literally jump ahead of you making you stay with them and you can't even explore your surrounds. Also she is wrong on the flight durations, their are several ways to constantly stay in the air.

@xxmavr1kxx: Agree, it was explicitly said why they were mad, Haluk made it very clear, there were cutscenes dedicated to show this issue. Also the story is incredibly difficult to follow ??? WTF, other reviewers are even calling the story simple and shallow.

I guess she wanted to fly around non-stop with unlimited jet power, the devs mentioned months ago how the flying worked, the cooldown features, all the tips and perks you could get to extend flying...

I don't know who this reviewer is but she obviously has no clue what she's talking about.

Dear Bioware,

Understand that you excel at single player experiences. Use your EA connections to Disney and pitch them this tech for an Iron Man game in similar style to Spiderman from Insomniac. It is such a perfect fit it is aggravating how you cant see it. Literally this game is already half way there. Please hear my cry and make an Iron Man game

@drod0756: This is a great idea. The problem is, EA isn't interested in anything that they can't continue to monetize. They don't want single player games like Spider-Man, they only want "games as a service." That's why they killed off the single-player Star Wars game that was halfway developed.

@Sound_Demon: But there are people in this world that continue to like MMOs. That's the problem. Look at Twitch for example.... thousands of people are watching games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, Overwatch and a many other Battle Royale style games. It's a disturbing trend honestly. I am a gamer who loves single player titles. I don't mind some multiplayer after the MAIN COURSE (single player campaign) is over just like how it used to be in the old days. But unfortunately, many Devs are catering to these MMO hordes. Sorry but it angers me. EA are the biggest culprits here.

@lionheartssj1: Not sure if you are currently playing or plan to but honestly the game is worth checking out. I think a lot a reviewers skipped some things as the story is explained if you listen to the cut scenes as another commenter pointed out. Bottom line the game isn't perfect and is like a 7.2 at best as is but it is fun which is why we game in the first place. I played with some friends during my demo time and we had a blast.

@Tegorian: I wanted to check it out after I finish KH3, but I'm hearing from a lot of streams I've watched that (outside of the bugs) it's devoid of content outside the short campaign. Plus, is it worth it for someone who plays solo 99% of the time?

@lionheartssj1: Honestly if all you do is straight campaign then yes it will be short but seeing as how you are playing KH3, on my list also by the way, I'm sure you are more a max my character do all sidequests kind of guy which means it isn't as short. The world has lore and it is rich plus they have already stated plans for expansion soo.... Also, playing solo isn't that big a deal as you can play solo or do the matchmaking. I would play solo or with a friend for the story though just my two cents.

@Tegorian: You would be correct on that assertion. I may have to pick it up then. Thanks for the input!

@Tegorian: Agreed, I've been having a great time playing it with my friends. The game is not getting a fair shake and thats the honest truth of it.

@darks88: which is sad because the developer is being so transparent and working hard to address all issues.

EA must bow down and kiss Respawn's feet for saving them from these utter thrash released from Bioware and DICE. And seriously, screw Frostbite engine. Not every developer is okay to use that engine. Look at Titanfall 2 and APEX, using Source engine and runs incredibly well.
