Anthem Review - Two Halves

  • First Released Feb 15, 2019

Stronger alone.

Launching upward off a jungle floor and bursting through a thick canopy of trees, bobbing and weaving your way under a waterfall as you take in the lush landscape below you, is one of the highlights of Anthem. Flight, in these moments, is freeing, serene and exhilarating all at once. But you will eventually have to come back down to earth. When you don't have a means to cool down in the air, you have to interrupt your flight to cool off on the ground--or else your suit will overheat and send you careening downward much more violently. This is what Anthem is like as a whole: a game where promising moments are bookended by frustration, where good ideas are undone before they can be fully realized.

It can take a while to warm up to Anthem in the first place. In its intro mission, you are a rookie Freelancer--a hero type who battles threats to humanity in mechanized combat suits called javelins. But that brief mission ends in failure, and after a two-year time skip, you're now an experienced Freelancer. As a result, everyone talks to you as if you know everything about the world, even though much of the game's space-fantasy jargon is explained only in codex entries. "Shapers," "Arcanists," to "silence" this or that "relic"--all the dialogue is structured as if you already know what all these things are, so there's not even an element of mystery to it. It's just hard to follow.

Now Playing: Anthem Quick Video Review

The story and overall worldbuilding do a great disservice to the characters, which have elements of what you might think of as BioWare's pedigree. The main cast is well-acted and genuine, with complicated emotions and motivations that might have been interesting had they been given time to grow. Two characters are mad at you for the events of the tutorial, even though it's never quite clear why; that bad blood spills over into your relationship with your current partner-in-Freelancing, Owen, and there's enough believable awkwardness there to make you almost feel bad for him. But because the narrative is so poorly set up, the drama feels unearned, the "emotional" reveals robbed of their impact, and any connection you might have had to the characters just out of reach.

Exacerbating all of this is Anthem's loot game core, which is simple on paper. After every mission, you return to your base of operations, Fort Tarsis, to talk to people, get new missions, and tinker with your javelins using the loot you picked up from the previous mission. Missions themselves almost universally involve some quick narrative setup followed by flying, completing routine tasks, and plenty of combat (with more brief plot-related stuff thrown in via radio chatter).

But this general structure doesn't work well in practice. You're told up front that playing Anthem with others is the best way to play and that you'll get better rewards in a group, but this means asking your friends to be quiet every few minutes so you can hear a bit of dialogue or to wait patiently while you tweak your loadout. Playing solo is better if you want to take your time and talk to different characters, but doing so can make missions more difficult or tedious. Matchmaking with random people is the best option, since you'll have people with you for grindy parts but will leave you alone for the story--but even then, it's easy to lose track of what's going on, especially if someone in your team is ahead of you and triggering dialogue early.

And no matter what, you'll have to return to Fort Tarsis after each expedition, which makes for choppy pacing in both the story and the gameplay. There's no way to change your loadout on the go and no way to just continue on to another mission right away, and there are currently a number of loading screens in between leaving and returning to Fort Tarsis. It's hard to really get into any kind of flow.

No Caption Provided

When I finally took the time to talk to NPCs in between missions, I found endearing characters and brief but interesting bits of story spread between them. There's one girl who just loves animals no matter how dangerous, and she'll happily tell you all about them; there's the oldest man in Fort Tarsis, who admits to doing some shady things to earn that title; there's an old woman whose daughter has been missing for years and might just need some kindness. Though it took some patience to do it, I was glad I stopped to listen to them.

Throughout all of this, combat is the main thing keeping Anthem afloat. There are four types of javelins--Ranger, Storm, Interceptor, and Colossus--that are essentially a soldier, mage, assassin, and tank, respectively. Each plays differently, with a different pool of abilities, and you aren't locked into the one you start with; you unlock them as you level up. That, combined with a handful of new weapons and abilities after each mission, means that you're almost always experimenting with new loadouts and playstyles.

I initially picked the Ranger, thinking it would be a good all-around class while I was learning the basics. But the guns alone aren't enough to make Anthem combat's exciting; I found a lot of the weapons, especially shotguns, to feel ineffectual. The Ranger's abilities are pretty straightforward, too--you get grenades and missiles and the like--which left me largely unimpressed with combat in the beginning. But then I unlocked the speedy Interceptor, whose gymnastic jumps and swift melee strikes are incredibly satisfying, and I started to get excited about trying new things in each successive mission.

No Caption Provided

The Storm javelin became my favorite, though, because it both has interesting elemental abilities and can hover for minutes, not seconds, at a time before overheating. Its assortment of powers lends itself well to getting combos, which result in a satisfying explosion of sorts and a more chaotic battlefield. But more importantly, it's the only javelin that doesn't require frequent stops on the ground, and as a result it provides the most dynamic combat--you can go from shooting basic enemies in a hallway to floating above the battlefield, raining down lightning to wipe out five at once while scoping out the area for your team.

Generally, all of the javelins can easily jet out of sticky situations in a pinch or briefly hover in the air to gain the upper hand, and combining movement with your abilities is consistently a good time. But when fighting titans and certain other bosses, there's a catch; a lot of them use fire attacks that overheat your suit and ground you instantly, robbing the fight of much of what makes combat interesting. You can still use your abilities, but they don't do much in these fights, and they fall flat compared to the often bombastic impact they have on regular enemies. This extends to the final fight, which is especially underwhelming.

The endgame thus far is to complete high numbers of the various mission types, which amounts to repeating many individual missions. The draw is better gear, but without compelling high-level fights, you don't have anything to build toward with all that grinding. A post-credits cutscene has the most intriguing plot point in the game and serves as a preview of what might come later on--but right now it's just a promise, rather than a true incentive to keep going.

It's worth noting that the early access period saw a number of technical hiccups. Dropped audio, server issues, long loading times, missions not registering as complete--I didn't have a single session without some sort of problem. A day-one patch aims to iron much of this out, but overall, the poor structure and pacing are a more frustrating problem. [Editor's note: We have now tried Anthem on PS4 Pro, Xbox One, and Xbox One X. The Pro and X versions generally run decently, with some technical hiccups and occasional frame rate drops, while we encountered more stuttering and strain on the standard Xbox One.]

Anthem has good ideas, but it struggles significantly with the execution. It's a co-op game that works best with no one talking; it buries genuinely interesting character moments and puts its most incomprehensible story bits at the forefront; its combat is exciting until you get to the boss fights and find your wings have been clipped. Even the simple, exhilarating act of flying is frequently interrupted by the limitations of your javelin, and you never quite shake that feeling of disappointment--of knowing, throughout the good parts of Anthem, that you'll inevitably come crashing back down.

The Good

  • Flying is exhilarating, and the views are beautiful
  • Experimenting with new loadouts each mission keeps combat fun and satisfying
  • Some side characters and their stories are endearing and interesting

The Bad

  • You're frequently forced to land or stay on the ground
  • The main story is incredibly difficult to follow
  • Playing with others causes pacing issues, while playing solo can be tedious
  • Boss fights are underwhelming and lack the excitement found in other combat situations

I like the combat, and I like that the differences between the classes feel more meaningful than in Destiny, but Anthem doesn't feel finished. The game needs more areas to explore, it needs more unique and interesting weapons and gear to earn, and it needs both more story missions and more group content.

There's a lot to like about the basics of Anthem, the game just never really does enough with any of them.

I hope EA doesn't run away from Anthem, and gives BioWare time to expand the game. If they put The Taken King/Forsaken levels of effort into overhauling Anthem, this COULD be a good game in another year.

@Mogan: Yup, I feel it needed more time to cook but EA doesn't want it to compete later in the year with the yearly crowd.

@Mogan: I agree, but wouldn’t it be nice if gamers/fans didn’t have to wait for unfinished games to be completed post-launch? This is getting ridiculous.

@Husker42C: It would, but since I've only spent $5 on a month's sub to EA Access, so I could play the trial, I'm not really out anything if I wait. There's plenty of other games to play until Anthem is good.

@Husker42C: I imagine it depends on how much money they've got tied up in post release Anthem development, and already sunk into Dragon Age.

Also, we don't actually know if Anthem is going to sell poorly. It wouldn't be the first time a game with middling review scores did good numbers.

@Mogan: Also, these days sales aren't the sole source of income - if you can get more money out of the players by making the experience less boring for them via microtransactions, you can afford to lose some sales.

I dont agree with CD3 or this review either. It seems like most gaming media are rating good games low to get clicks. Todays media is very good at this. All you need is a fanbase made up of people who follow the crowds opinions. I'm not calling anyone here out, but its so strange to see EA get hammered lately on these games they put out. Anthem and CD3 were both 8s for me. Anthem has its issues. But not to warrant a Fair rating. The game is better than that. Im still in the middle of playing. I have a solid state drive on my pc, and I dont see any long load times or many bugs that break the game. I know the consoles are different builds though, and the game should work good across all platforms. But as for the game itself, I like it. I talk to a few people in game that says they like it, but needs work. I think of games like the Witcher series, PS exclusives and others that have had great success lately, and I'll be honest, Anthem isnt as good as those games. Did I fall into the hype trap here? Maybe so. Is it time for me to take a hard look into what a great game should be with all the different genres offered? Ive been gaming for 35 years. Im 43 now. What is it that we truly want in a game? Maybe its time I take a good hard look at which developers are trying to make great games, and look at developers trying to make money. I think that could be my problem here. I hate to see games fail because gaming is my "thing" man. I dont want it to go away. And reviews like this scare me.

@pongman1975: "It seems like most gaming media are rating good games low to get clicks."

That's the usual explanation when a score gamers don't like is low. When it's high it's payola.
Anything to avoid confronting the idea that somebody in the games media doesn't agree with your opinions.

@pongman1975: What scares me is when publishers like EA take competent developers like BioWare and try to get them to make a shallow repetitive shooter like Anthem for the sake of milking gamers with cosmetic microtransactions.

What scares me is how Microsoft can't take its exclusive line up seriously and sat on a game for five years while the MP engine was caught up in red tape and had to be rebuilt and never bothered to work on the single player while everyone was waiting.

I don't want gaming to go away either, but I do want it to get better. That's what reviews like this are for.

@JustPlainLucas: I'd still take the review with a grain of salt. For some reason both IGN and Gamespot are both in a 'Games are all terrible' mood of late lol.

I don't trust them after i have had a brilliant time with Crackdown 3 single player and i know plenty enjoying Co op campaign as well (Thanks to gamepass which helps ) :)

@deviltaz35: It's not just this review, though. I've seen several videos from people who've played it since early access, and they're not that excited about it, either. There are also four other reviews on Metacrit that are 7s. For what I want from the game, it's a major fail. Sure, people who have nothing better to do and love doing the same shit for a month straight will enjoy it, but I don't have time for a game that does nothing to further its interest to a single-player gamer like myself.

As far as Crackdown 3 goes, it deserved the five. It was held up for five years just to deliver a lackluster MP and an uninspired single player campaign. I'm playing it myself right now and am having fun with it, but I feel you can have fun with average games and still be critical of their issues. You may have been a bit more critical of it had you paid 60 for it like I did.

@JustPlainLucas: You summed it up good there. I remeber being on the 1st Destiny hype train. Shouldve learned something when it got low scores. Its big cooperate ruining everything for us. Gotta get money, and reputation is put on the back burner and "fixed" later.

@pongman75: Problem being people keep buying them though. If people had sense and didn't buy this rot then they would not be made in the first place.

There is a chance Destiny series may be good now Bungie has actual control themselves though.

Bioware should start making new type of comedy RPGs with their CrazyFace ( tm) patented facial animations technology. Lots of quips, this could be the beginning of a brand new genre.

Get to it, EA henchmuggers!

@bobothemighty: lol it looks ok in Anthem though at least based on the demo. At times it looks like they hired their facial creator talent to Metro Devs as that is a bit weird too :). The game is awesome though but the star of the show is easily the railway and trains and epic environments lol. I still feel they could do more with the graphics on Xbox one X though as it should have tessellation on that machine.

There’s no I in team, unless you spell it in Welsh! (Reference to headline of article)

When BioWare announced this, I wasn’t impressed as it all looked a bit generic. EA want their developers to make these kind of games because it makes them all the money. But it’s not the reason why I buy BioWare games. Single player is where they excel. Though both multiplayer modes from mass effect 3 and andremoda did end up complimenting the games well, sans micro transactions or course. The sooner BioWare part from EA the better they’ll be. Providing EA don’t shut the first.

The fact that I’m not commenting really on any of Kallie’s review sums up the 6 that she gave Anthem. Let’s face it. EA’s big multiplayer game of the moment is Apex legends. It’s gonna be a reverse Titanfall 2 situation for respawn. Poor reviews. Questionable fan reaction just means that Anthem will never hits the heights it could of probably earned...... though maybe I could be wrong on it’s future success!

@scottislemon: As soon as I found out about the multiplayer focus, this game went from a potential day-1 purchase (which I really try to avoid doing) to a potential non-purchase. Ah well. Maybe they'll vastly improve it and by then it'll be cheaper and I'll check it out. But if I can't play it solo without it being too grindy and annoying then I'll pass.

@RSM-HQ: So you would rather play a game with a poorly designed engine where the devs haven't even heard of no clip (Not talking about the brilliant documentaries) and hidden line removal?

Monster hunter world looks and plays like it came out in the mid 2000's.

However hidden line removal started to be history in the late 90's on PC.

The one thing i will give Monster Hunter World though is the free support they give the game and the other game character tie ins that is all clever stuff to get people in.

I just can't get into it as the animation is clunky and the graphics are rather rubbish even on Xbox one X.

However the single worst thing about Monster Hunter world is the use of cats in the kitchen it just doesn't fit the game at all and looks stupid and babyish.

@deviltaz35: So you watched a YT video and have an opinion. .

On visuals I wouldn't exactly use Bioware as an option of praise, the game has ugly characters much like the last game they turd out. At least MH has its own style, and would argue the animations are far more fluid than games like the above offer_

On top of that I think anyone who has played Monster Hunter knows its superior in the gameplay department. level design is masterful and enemy A.I. is ahead of games like Anthem. In fact I can't think of a single other game series with superior CPU A.I. The layer of options given to the player as well is extremely deeply layered.

But if my paragraph isn't enough, you should question why Monster Hunter has a popular competitive tournament scene.

Monster Hunter is great and only on the up. Bioware could very well be fired after this 6/10.

@lembu90: Not familiar with The Division very much, yet from my understanding a few who like MH have been eyeing Anthem. Non in my social circle for MH, but have seen it compared. And doesn't seem to have stacked-up. Doesn't help that it has had mixed reaction before release_

If you ask me Bioware should have stuck to what fans enjoy and not chase bigger fish. This looks like an expensive mess. Doesn't help that The Division seems to be having a sequel in the near future, then add Monster Hunter: Iceborne adding the much beloved G-Rank.

Well looks like we might not be getting Dragon Age 4 or it will be their last chance... They made an action multiplayer game which was suppose to be an easy cash grab and presumably (easier to make) due to the lack of core RPG mechanics but the game still has problems.

Yup, definitely one of those games that needs MANY MANY patches and alterations to become enjoyable for the long haul.

If they listen to the player base and fix Anthem's many problems, it could turn a corner later down the road, and be a fun game.

But as of now, if they don't make some serious changes, and fast, the game is gonna be dead in less than a month.

Too bad too, I really wanted this game to succeed.

Well... I don't think this score is going to really shock any who have been following Anthem since its first reveal.

I think many out there saw the direction Bio-ware was going once it was announced that this was a partnership with EA. Thoughts of another Destiny clone couldn’t be erased out of their minds once more and more details of Bio-ware’s latest were compiled over the following months and for good reason.

EA is sticking to a business model that has proved extremely profitable for various companies and as of right now isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.

While there was a glimmer of hope with Bio-ware at the helm on this latest outing the Bio-ware that had won over gamers hearts in the past is a shell of its former self (if it even still exists.).

It’s true the studio still has a chance to redeem itself in the way of future releases (upcoming Dragon Age.) but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that gamers may have finally moved on.
