The untimely release of Final Fantasy XIII may have snatched some of its thunder, but that doesn’t stop Tri-Ace’s Resonance of Fate from delivering an ambitious and daring JRPG experience. RoF boldly ditches the medieval cutlery in favor of guns, and offers up a mechanical world with no shortage of challenging obstacles. The results are somewhat mixed but mostly positive. Resonance of Fate makes no attempt at spinning a broad tale. Rather, it keeps much of the spotlight on your main three characters and their own personal ambitions. It trudges along, oftentimes tongue-in-cheek, not really blossoming until the final hours. Were it left to the story alone, Resonance of Fate might be considered pure mediocrity, but the deep combat system and enjoyable gameplay help propel it into respectable territory.
