What this sci-fi FPS lacks in originality, it makes up for in relentless explosive action.

User Rating: 8.5 | Resistance: Fall of Man PS3
Resistance: Fall of Man is far from the most original or creative FPS out there. In fact, take Halo, throw in some Medal of Honor and a touch of Half Life, mix them up and the result might be something like Resistance. There is little here we haven't seen before. Fortunately Insomniac seem to have gotten the mix quite right though, end it ends up being one of the best FPS games on the current consoles.

It's a shame the story and characters, particularly the protagonist Nathan Hale, were not developed more. The story is basically that the Chimera, hideous alien type creatures have emerged presumably out of Russia in the 1950's (World War 2 never took place) and taken over all of Europe, and are now headed for the UK, where the final resistance is based. And, well, that's about it. From there on it's all about blasting the crud out of every thing that moves and isn't human. The hero is the strong and (completely) silent type, which makes him hard to connect with.

Thankfully the shooting is where Resistance hits the mark (no pun intended). There's a great range of fictional alien type weaponry, and you can carry as many as you like, including some of the coolest variations on grenades I've seen in an FPS. The action is fast, frantic and loud with no trace of slowdown (and barely a chance to scratch yourself). Once you're in, it's an unrelenting battle to the finish. It's definitely inspired by Halo, and you'll see that more and more in the final stages as you infiltrate the Chimera nest.

Graphics: 9
Resistance is a great looking FPS, no doubt about it. Everything is detailed including environmental damage, the Chimera look freaky as hell and have great designs, and most of the environments are visually appealing. Being an early PS3 title, there is room for improvement (bring on Resistance 2) but very few complaints here apart from lack of originality of some environments.

Sound: 9
This really does sound the way a game of its type should. An almost ideal soundtrack, at times haunting, for gun battling freakish monsters using futuristic weaponry in 1950's London. The sound effects are suberb too, from the reloading of rifles to the growls and shrieks of the Chimera.

Gameplay: 8
As I said, there's not much that's new here, which holds it back from getting a 9. There's also not much thinking to be done here. Kill, reload, kill and move on. However this one is fast-paced, with plenty to shoot at and never gets boring. There are also sequences in which you can drive vehicles such as tanks and even the spider-shaped walking alien tanks, making for a more varied experience. All of these handle quite well. Solid, entertaining action and smooth controls from start to finish.

Replay Value: 8
While the single player campaign can be completed in a few days, the online play may keep you coming back. If not, there's always the fact that after your first play through you unlock new weapons, some of which can be duel-wielded Halo style. Plus this one is great any time you don't feel like thinking, and you want to just pick up the controller and blast holes in your foes.

In conclusion: Bring on the sequel!
